Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

Answer: Hollywood

The Los Angeles, California, district of Hollywood began as an agricultural area in the 1850s, but wasn't named as such until the 1880s. In the early 1910s the embryonic film industry moved in as California was a long way from New Jersey, where Thomas Edison's patents frequently resulted in independent film companies being sued for infringements. The rest, as they say, is history...

There are many other places, in the US and elsewhere, called Hollywood; and the name itself has been adapted to describe the film centres of other countries, for example, Bollywood in India. At one point, several towns in the US successfully defended a lawsuit which prevented the Los Angeles Hollywood from copyrighting the name.
2. Her morning meal involved a New York jewellery store.

Answer: Holly Golightly

"Breakfast at Tiffany's", the 1958 novella by Truman Capote, follows the interaction of Holly Golightly, a country girl and would-be New York socialite, with her downstairs neighbour (a writer) in the brownstone house in which they both live, and with other characters of the "cafe society" of the time.

The novella has been adapted for stage, TV, and musical theatre, but most famously, perhaps, as the 1961 film starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard.

Can you actually have breakfast at Tiffany's? Yes, both in New York and at Harrods in London, The Blue Box Cafe at Tiffany's has been open for several years (as of 2021).
3. Deceased musician with distinctive spectacles.

Answer: Buddy Holly

The musical career of Charles Hardin Holley (1936-1959), "Buddy" Holly, was cut short by his death in a plane crash in 1959, but his distinctive voice and musical legacy influenced many of the greats of the rock and pop world, such as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Elton John, The Clash, and Eric Clapton.
4. Incredible actress.

Answer: Holly Hunter

Winner of an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the 1993 film "The Piano", Holly Hunter has had a varied career in the entertainment industry including roles in the films "Raising Arizona" (1987), "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000), and as the voice of Elastigirl (Mrs. Incredible) in "The Incredibles" (2004) and "Incredibles 2" (2018).

She has also appeared in many TV roles and provided the voice for the Elastigirl character in several video games - and all this in spite of being partially deaf following contracting mumps as a child.
5. Computer from a popular TV sci-fi series.

Answer: Holly

The British sci-fi comedy series "Red Dwarf" ran from 1988 to 1999 on BBC2, and has since been franchised to other channels worldwide. Holly is the holographic head who is the embodiment of the computer that runs the interstellar mining ship "Red Dwarf", and is known for deadpan humour.

Holly has been male, portrayed by British actor Norman Lovett, and female, portrayed by actress Hattie Hayridge. A pilot was made for an American version of the programme, with the Holly character played by Jane Leeves, but it was never aired.
6. British TV soap opera.

Answer: Hollyoaks

Originally formulated to appeal to teenage and young adult viewers, this long-running British soap opera is set in the fictional village of Hollyoaks (located somewhere near the English city of Chester). It is notable for incorporating storylines that deal with serious issues, particularly those associated with the younger viewing audience.

The series has not been without controversy: for example, students at Chester University have objected to the way that the students in the series have been portrayed, as they felt it damaged the university's reputation in the eyes of students elsewhere. Generally, though, the series has received praise for the way it tackles thorny social issues.
7. Musician from Liverpool who went to Question 1.

Answer: Holly Johnson

Best known for fronting the band Frankie Goes to Hollywood in the 1980s, Liverpudlian Holly Johnson has since pursued a solo career as a musician, painter, and writer.

His paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Tate Liverpool gallery.
8. Ship ahoy!

Answer: USS Holly

Two US Navy ships have borne the name USS Holly.

The first was a steamer, built in Baltimore in 1881, and borrowed from the US Commerce Department for service in World War 1.

The second USS Holly was a net-laying ship in World War 2 - a ship that installed and serviced the defensive nets set up to protect and secure harbours. She served along the East and Gulf coasts of the US and extensively in the Pacific.
9. Meteorological phenomenon.

Answer: Tropical Storm Holly

There have been several hurricanes and typhoons named Holly.

In 1969 and 1976, the two named "Hurricane Holly" caused minimal damage in and around the Caribbean and faded quickly.

The Western Pacific Ocean has Tropical Storm Holly (1981) which faded out over open ocean, Typhoon Holly (1984) which caused extensive damage and some deaths on the Korean peninsula, and Supertyphoon Holly (1987) which, although severe, did not cross any land masses.
10. Former actress and journalist. Daughter of Jack.

Answer: Holly Palance

Daughter of the actor Jack Palance, Holly Palance followed her father into acting before changing to a career in journalism in the 1990s. Her roles include the Nanny in the film "The Omen" (1976), and Miss Carmichael in the TV mini-series "The Thorn Birds" (1983).

She also co-hosted the documentary TV series "Ripley's Believe It or Not" with her father in 1983-1984.
