Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Quotation : In the context of the burning of so-called undesirable books in Nazi Germany, a saying is sometimes quoted : 'Wherever books will be burnt, men also, in the end, are burnt'. From which German writer, famous for his 1825 work 'The Book of Songs', is this saying supposed to have originated?

Answer: Heinrich Heine

The remark is eerily prophetic indeed, coming from someone who died in 1856, roughly a century before the horrors of the Holocaust. Born of Jewish parents, his works and reputation were attacked by the Nazis during their reign, but has since emerged unscathed and stronger.
2. Philosophers : When you think too much about the fundamentals of life and existence, you invariably start acting rather strange. Some examples include Diogenes telling Alexander the Great not to block his sunlight and Thales falling into a well while looking at stars. How about this fellow, who was heralded by his followers as a god, and died after he jumped into the crater of Mt Etna in an attempt to prove it?

Answer: Empedocles

Empedocles was born in Acragas in Sicily. His principal work was 'On Nature', in which he postulated that the world is made of of four elements (air, fire, earth and water), which are in turn governed by the forces of love and discord.
3. Earth sciences : Named after the Croatian scientist Andrija Mohorovicic, the Mohorovicic discontinuity is a well-known demarcation which marks the boundary between which of the following entities?

Answer: The Earth's crust and mantle

The Mohorovicic discontinuity was calculated to lie some 20 km below the Earth's surface, and was derived in 1909 based on the observation that the P-waves from earthquakes travel at different velocities through the crust and mantle due to their different densities.

Incidentally, the demarcation between Oriental and Australian fauna is known as the Wallace line, which passes between the Indonesian islands of Bali and Lombok.
4. Music : This famous Russian composer was born in 1839, and spent his earlier years serving in the Russian army. A chance meeting with Mili Balakirev led him to turn to music full-time. He is probably best known for works such as 'A Night on Bare Mountain' (which was included in Disney's 1937 animated feature 'Fantasia'), as well as 'Boris Godunov' and 'Khovanschchina'. Who is he?

Answer: Modest Mussorgsky

The 5 composers mentioned above formed the 'Mighty Five' or the 'Mighty Handful' of nationalistic Russian composers during that era. Even though Balakirev was the mentor amongst the five, Mussorgsky is generally regarded as the most creative of the group.
5. Classical Mythology : The tale of Theseus and the Minotaur is well-known to all - the Minotaur was imprisoned in the Labyrinth (constructed by Daedalus) under the command of King Minos. Theseus came and slew it, and managed to escape the Labyrinth with help from Ariadne, King Minos' daughter. Now the really stupid question comes : what is the name of the Minotaur?

Answer: Asterius

Sorry about this one - rather a low blow I think. Anyway, the Minotaur was born after King Minos' queen - Pasiphae - engaged in some hanky-panky with a sacred bull sent by Poseidon, the god of the oceans. It is little wonder that Minos wishes to lock it forever in the Labyrinth.
6. Geography : Which state in India has a name which means 'Five Waters', which refers to the five rivers located within its territory?

Answer: Punjab

Not that you are likely to be asked but the 5 rivers are : Beas, Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej. However, the modern state of Punjab, formed after the partition of India in 1947, only contains the Beas and the Sutlej within it!
7. Medicine : What sort of specialist are you likely to be if you are found using the Ishihara chart in your practice?

Answer: Ophthalmologist

The Ishihara chart is used for testing for colour-blindness - multi-coloured palettes with numbers formed by a distinctively different colour within. The chart used for testing visual acuity is known as the Snellen's chart.
8. Famous buildings : The cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, in the northwestern part of Spain, was the one of the most popular Christian shrine of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. Which of the following apostle's remains are said to lie beneath the high altar in the cathedral?

Answer: St James

St James (San Iago or San Diego in Spanish) was beheaded in Jerusalem in AD 44. As legend would have it, his body was set to sea in a ship with neither sails nor crew. It arrived in northwestern Spain, was buried and rediscovered in Compostela in the year 810.
9. History : Those of you who saw 'Matrix Reloaded' (who hasn't?) will know of the character known was the Merovingian. The term Merovingian actually refers to the first French dynasty, established in 481 AD by Clovis I. Which dynasty succeeded it in 751 AD?

Answer: Carolingian

In 751, the last Merovingian king, Childeric III, was deposed by Pepin the Short, thus heralding the arrival of the Carolingian dynasty. It lasted till 987 AD, and included in it the crowning of Charlemagne as the 1st Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day of 800 AD.
10. Popular Fiction : The planet in the 'Star Wars' universe is located in the distant Sluis sector of the Outer Rim Territories. It is a forgotten world shrouded in mist and covered with swamps, where Luke Skywalker journeyed to seek out the missing Jedi master, Yoda. What is the name of this planet?

Answer: Dagobah

Hope that makes some Star Wars fans happy. See ya !
