Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What country is often termed 'The Land Down Under'?

Answer: Australia

New Zealand, just across the Tasman Sea, has also been called "down under".
2. If you halve the square root of the square of 66, what positive number do you get?

Answer: 33

The square root of the square of 66 is just 66, halved = 33.
3. According to the famous Elvis song, 'You ain't nothing but a ____ ____'?

Answer: hound dog

4. According to the famous saying, an _____ a day keeps the doctor away?

Answer: apple

The other options may indeed be true, but the old saying states that it's an apple.
5. According to the National Institutes of Health, how many hours of sleep is recommended for adults per night?

Answer: 8

Of course, not everyone needs 8 hours every night. As we age, we need less and less sleep. Edison reportedly only needed five hours a night, whilst Einstein apparently needed a good twelve hours. Amazing he had time to do so much (but inspiring for fellow sleep-lovers!).
6. Which U2 song was played when Ross and Rachel first broke up on 'Friends'?

Answer: 'With or Without You'

Very appropriate, methinks.
7. What is the capital of New Zealand?

Answer: Wellington

8. Which cigarette brand has the motto 'When only the best will do'?

Answer: Benson and Hedges

9. Finish the line from this 60s' classic: 'Who put the bomp in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp...'

Answer: Who put the ram in the rama lama ding dong

It really is a song, for those of you who haven't heard it. Very catchy! Released in 1961 by Barry Mann.
10. Marie Curie and her husband Pierre discovered which radioactive substance?

Answer: Radium

And she died of radioactive poisoning (what a surprise!). Apparently her notebooks are still radioactive and must be handled wearing protective clothing.
11. What is the term for a word that can be rearranged to form another word?

Answer: Anagram

For example, 'news' can be re-arranged to 'sewn'. An acronym is a word that takes the first letter of several words, eg. QANTAS (Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service). An antonym is the opposite meaning of a word, eg 'good' is the antonym of 'evil'. A palindrome is a word or words that are the same if read backwards or forwards, for example, 'level'.
12. St Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland, reputedly drove all of the what out of Ireland?

Answer: Snakes

13. OK, time to annoy you ... What is the 10,000th decimal place of pi not counting the whole number 3?

Answer: 8

I found this out by examining a print-out someone gave me, so fear not, I am not one of those weird freaks who memorises pi to millions of places (although I do know it to 40...)
14. What Angel appeared to Mary to tell her that she was to bear the son of God?

Answer: Gabriel

15. As always, we will finish with a mathematical pattern. Now, this one is SO EASY, so don't over-think it, OK? 7,21,35,49,63,__ ?

Answer: 77

Just every second multiple of 7, so we have 7*1 = 7, 7*3 = 21, 7*5 = 35, 7*7 = 49, 7*9 = 63, so the next one is 7*11 = 77. Hope you liked the quiz.
