Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Middle age is a social, not a biological, construct but most studies of middle age peg it between which ages?

Answer: 40-65

Middle age is that period located somewhere between young adulthood and the beginning of signs of old age. Because some people enter adulthood sooner or later than others and because some people show signs of old age earlier or later than others, it is difficult to define middle age with precision. Most medical and sociological studies of middle age put the range between 40 and 65. Young adulthood is indicated by "settling down" in the sense of entering into a permanent relationship, raising children and holding a job for a lengthy period of time. Old age is indicated by deficits in physical and cognitive functioning. Middle age is indicated by career development and the enjoyment of grandchildren.
2. Who wrote and sang the song "River of Dreams" which begins "In the middle of the night / I go walking in my sleep / From the mountains of faith / To the river so deep"?

Answer: Billy Joel

The Billy Joel song "River of Dreams" is often called "In the Middle of the Night" because of its first line. It was first released on the album "River of Dreams" in 1993 and again on "The Essential Billy Joel" in 2001. The cover of "River of Dreams" was painted by Christie Brinkley to whom he was then married; "Rolling Stone" chose it as 1993's "Best Album Cover of the Year."
3. According to Mahesh Rajasekharan, "Disintermediation is the process of removing the middleman... from future transactions." In economic/business terms, what is a middleman?

Answer: a distributor between manufacturer and consumer

The norm in business is that the manufacturer produces the product, sells it to a middleman, who then distributes it to consumers. Kellogg's makes corn flakes; the grocer sells them to hungry people. Volkswagen makes the Jetta; an auto dealership sells it to a person who needs a car.

The middleman "marks up" the cost of the product in order to earn a living from its sale to distributors. Efforts to "cut out the middleman" are attempts to minimize those increased costs. The rise of e-commerce has had this effect. An order placed by the consumer with Amazon or eBay is often filled directly by the manufacturer without ever being touched by the on-line vendor.
4. Academic sociologist Bart Landry wrote "The New Black Middle Class" in 1987 and "The New Black Middle Class in the Twenty-First Century" in 2018. How is "middle class" customarily defined?

Answer: these factors all weigh in a definition

Landry updates his classic work to reflect the growth of the Black middle class in the United States in three decades. The middle class is defined as a group between the upper echelons of hierarchical society (the capitalist nobility) and the lower classes of unskilled workers and unemployed.

This determination may not sensibly be made on the basis of any one factor -- income, education, employment stability, residence, language usage, values -- alone but rather on the interplay of these factors.

A definition suitable to the United States may not be at all useful in other national and regional contexts.
5. "Middle Ground" (1980) is a novel by Margaret Drabble. Middleground was an American thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1950 Kentucky Derby. In terms of philosophy (and argumentation), what is the middle ground?

Answer: the Golden Mean, the desirable middle

As a principle in philosophy, the middle ground refers to a position located between two extremes: one overstated and excessive, the other insufficient and deficient. One of the best-known proponents was Aristotle who called this the Golden Mean. A Doric epigram carved into the Temple at Delphi read "Nothing in excess." Something similar is contained in Ecclesiastes 7:15-16. Likewise in the Quran, "The Cow," vv. 96, 143.

There is, however, a logical fallacy called "argumentum ad temperantiam" (argument to moderation).

It demonstrates that a position is not necessarily correct simply because it is interposed between two extremes. If one argues that water boils at sea level at 100 degrees F and another argues that the water boils at 212 degrees F, it is not correct to say that water boils at 156 degrees F.
6. Which of the following is an example of a person with a middle name?

Answer: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

A "middle name" is part of a person's name between the first or given name and the family or surname. If the middle name is abbreviated, it ceases to be a middle name and becomes a middle initial. Different cultures handle such matters differently and it is sometimes difficult to sort.

The use of a hyphen makes it easier to sort. Pablo Picaso's full name was Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso, which must have been difficult to fit on a business card. President Truman had no middle name; his parents gave him only a middle initial.

The former president visited Eugene, Oregon, in 1955 to raise money for the construction of the Truman Library. The local Swinomish Indian Tribe offered to give him the middle name of Swinomish but he politely declined.
7. Which of the following is NOT considered one of the Middle States?

Answer: Maine

The Middle States (or Middle Atlantic States or Mid-Atlantic States) are those states situate between the New England states and the states of the Old South. Definitions vary but the most often included states are New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland.

The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools is a private, non-profit, accreditation agency, as is the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
8. What is a middle school in the middle of?

Answer: between elementary school and high school

Generally speaking, primary school or elementary school is followed by some sort of secondary school, preparatory to trade school or university. In between the primary and the secondary schools, there may be a sort of intermediate school called junior high school or middle school.

Although there is considerable variation, a common pattern is grades 1-6 in elementary school, grades 7-9 in middle school, and grades 10-12 in high school. The rationale is that students completing elementary school are of too tender years to be thrown together with high school seniors. Too often, the decision is made based on enrollment and the capacity of existing buildings.
9. One hears references to "middle income families" but what exactly defines middle income in the United States?

Answer: a range around national median income

The U.S. Census Bureau collects and reports family incomes by household. From this data, a national median household income is computed. The Pew Research Center defines the middle class as those households earning two-thirds to double the national median household income.

This computation does not take into account the widely-varying cost of living in different parts of the country. A middle income goes a lot farther in some places than in others. Nonetheless, as of 2018, 52% of Americans enjoyed a middle income.
10. The finger located between the index finger and the ring finger is called what?

Answer: any of these answers is correct

There are numerous names for the third finger: the middle finger, the long finger, the tall finger, the digitus medius and the digitus tertius. It, in conjunction with the thumb, is useful for snapping. This finger, when displayed, is also considered obscene and insulting.

The gesture is known as "flipping the bird, flipping someone off, and giving someone the finger." In some jurisdictions, the gesture is considered "fighting words" as a justification for retaliatory fisticuffs.
