Melbourne is situated in the south of Victoria, which is located south east on mainland Australia. It is Australia's second most populous city after Sydney. Melbourne was first settled and established in 1835 by John Batman. The city was named after former British Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne.

Rod Laver Arena is located in Melbourne's Olympic Park and is named after the famous Australian tennis player. The tournament is the first of the four tennis Grand Slams and is held in January of each year.

Rod Laver Arena is used for a number of other purposes throughout the year including being a popular venue for concerts.

Both Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations are located above-ground while most of tracks followed on the loop are located below-ground. Flinders Street Station is an iconic landmark in Melbourne and is recognised for the clocks that are displayed on the front of the building. The current building at Flinders Street Station was built in 1903.

The hide of Phar Lap is displayed at the Melbourne museum. Phar Lap lived between 1926 and 1932, was bred in New Zealand but trained in Australia. He won many races during his short life including the Melbourne Cup in 1930.

Each year the Melbourne Cup is held on the first Tuesday of November as a part of the spring racing carnival. It has been dubbed 'The race that stops the nation' as it is a public holiday for most Australians and is watched by millions. A recent well-known winner of the race is Makybe Diva who won in 2003, 2004 and 2005; she is the first horse to have done this.

The Duke of Wellington was built in 1850 and licenced in 1853. It is located on the corner of Flinders and Russell Street and is named after the Duke who defeated Napoleon in the Battle of Waterloo.

Myer and David Jones are both department stores in Australia and both have main entrances located on Bourke Street. Bourke Street between Elizabeth and Swanston Street is closed to cars, however there are trams that travel up and down the street. This street is also home to a number of other clothing stores.

"Neighbours" is a classic Australian soap opera that began filming in 1985. Pin Oak Court is used as a location for filming scenes in the street, although the indoor scenes are filmed in a studio. People actually live in the houses on Pin Oak Court and allow the production company to film in their street and yards.

Melbourne Storm was established in 1997 and the team played their first season in 1998. They won the 1999, 2007 and 2009 premierships. In April 2010 the team became the centre of great controversy after they were stripped of three minor premierships and two premierships, when it was revealed that the club was in breach of the salary cap rules.
