Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: In which of these places would you find the tenrec?

Answer: Madagascar

Tenrecs are small omnivorous animals who eat insects. They become aware of prey with the help of their whiskers. They weigh 1 to 2 kg, and they eat a lot: invertebrates, vegetation, fruit, worms, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals etc. The common tenrec is found between Madagascar and Africa, on the Comorros Islands.

It is also found on Madagascar. It belongs to the species 'Tenrec ecaudatus'.
2. English Language: What does schadenfreude mean?

Answer: A malicious satisfaction in the misfortunes of others.

A word for 'the feeling or attitude of regarding someone or something as inferior, base, or worthless' is contempt. A word for 'complete loss of hope' is despair. A word for 'a message that departs from the main subject' is divagation. Schadenfreude is a German word - 'Schaden' in German means damage, and 'freude' means joy.
3. Films: Which film released in 2003 starred Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Nick Nolte, Sam Elliott and Josh Lucas?

Answer: The Hulk

'The Hulk' was originally released on June 20th, 2003, and was directed by Ang Lee. It is 2 hours and 18 minutes (138 minutes) long.
4. Chemistry: Which is the only non-metal which is liquid at room temperature? Bromine, chlorine or mercury?

Answer: bromine

Bromine is the only NON-METAL that is liquid at room temperature; it is reddish-brown in colour. Mercury is the only METAL that is liquid at room temperature; it is bright silver in colour. Chlorine is a gas at room temperature; it is a greeny yellow gas.
5. Ancient History: Who was the longest reigning king of the Chaldean dynasty, circa 604 B.C.?

Answer: Nebuchadnezzar

When Nebuchadnezzar became king of the Chaldeans in about 604 B.C., he boosted Babylonia to a new era of power and strength. He also defeated the Egyptians in Syria and put an end to their hopes of expanding their empire. The Chaldeans swiftly collapsed after his death circa 562 B.C.
6. Literature: Fill in the blank with a word to complete the title of this classic written by Thomas Hardy: _______ from the Madding Crowd.

Answer: far

Thomas Hardy was born on June 2, 1840 in Dorset, in Great Britain. 'Far From the Madding Crowd' is about the love story of Bathsheba Everdene and Gabriel Oak. He also wrote 'The Mayor of Casterbridge' and 'A Pair of Blue Eyes', among others. He died in Dorset on January 11, 1928.
7. Maths: Given that x = 2y - y^-2 + (-z)^2, find x when y = negative square root of 36, and z = -4 + 7.

Answer: -109/36

Your first task is to find y and z. Every natural number has two roots - a positive root and a negative root. 36 is a natural number, therefore 36 has two roots: +6 and -6 (-6 * -6 = 36, and 6 * 6 = 36). But we are concerned with the negative square root, so y = -6.
z = - 4 + 7
z = 3.
Now that we know y and z, we can substitute the values of y and z in the equation and solve it (It's best to put the values of y and z, i.e. -6 and 3 in brackets, otherwise we can end up doing a mistake because of the signs) :
x = 2y - y^-2 + (-z)^2
= 2(-6) - (-6)^-2 + (-[3])^2
= -12 - (1/[-6]^2) + (-3)^2
= -12 - (1/36) + (-3)^2
= -12 - 1/36 + 9
= -3 - 1/36
= -108/36 - 1/36
= -109/36.
If you had a problem with that question, you can ask me! I wonder how many of you got that one right... Without guessing!
8. Geography: Which city in Northern Egypt is situated on Lake Manzala near the Mediterranean Sea and is also the birthplace of world-renowned Egyptologist, Dr. Zahi Hawass?

Answer: Damietta

Dr. Zahi Hawass was born in Damietta, or Dumyat, on May 28, 1947. Damietta is an important manufacturing and trade centre, and it had had a strategic and industrial importance in the Middle Ages. For this reason, it was plundered by the Byzantines and the Sicilian Normans. Afterwards, it was captured by the Crusaders from 1219 - 1221, and also by Louis IX of France from 1249 - 1250.
9. Musical Instruments: How should you normally play a violoncello?

Answer: By bowing

A violoncello is also known as a cello, and it looks just like a violin and a viola. The difference is that a violoncello is placed between the knees (the violin and the viola are placed under the chin) and it is larger than both the violin and the viola.

A viola is a little larger than the violin, making the violin the smallest of the three. They are all stringed instruments, i.e. the strings vibrate to produce sound in these instruments. A violoncello can also be played by plucking, but it is normally played by bowing.
10. Computers: In HTML, #800000 is the hexadecimal value for which colour?

Answer: maroon

All colours have RGB (Red, Green, Blue) colour values. In HTML, these colour values are expressed in the hexadecimal (base 16) number system, by using the numbers 0 - 9, and the letters A - F. All hexadecimal codes are preceded by a '#' symbol. The code for brown is #804000, the code for violet is #8D38C9 and the code for turquoise is #00FFFF.
