Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which well known actress was born with the surname Zacharenko and drowned in 1981? She was nominated for three Academy Awards and married Robert Wagner. Who was she?

Answer: Natalie Wood

Natalie Wood was one of the ill-fated stars of "Rebel Without a Cause". Co-stars James Dean and Sal Mineo also died young. Dean famously in a car crash while Mineo was stabbed to death by Lionel Ray Williams. She drowned in an accident while on a weekend break with her husband Robert Wagner and co-star Christopher Walken.
2. A former Member of Parliament in the UK which media tycoon was born Jan Hoch in Czechoslovakia and drowned in 1991?

Answer: Robert Maxwell

Maxwell was the Labour MP for Buckingham between 1964 and 1970. Controversy followed his death with the collapse of the Maxwell pension fund and allegations that Maxwell himself was an agent for Mossad (the Israeli Intelligence Service). The Jewish publisher was also under investigation for war crimes from 1945 at the time of his death.
3. Which guitarist, who played in one of the most famous bands of all time, drowned in 1969? His real first name was Lewis.

Answer: Brian Jones

Jones was a founding member of the Rolling Stones along with Ian Stewart, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman joined shortly afterward and Stewart moved from piano to being the band's manager. Jones' personal issues led to the talented musician being ousted from the band in 1969. He drowned in his swimming pool the same year.
4. This Greek mythological figure was the father of Theseus. When he believed Theseus to be dead he jumped into a sea and drowned. The sea in which he drowned is now named after him. Who was he?

Answer: Aegeus

Aegeus had instructed his son to fly white sails if he'd slain the minotaur and black sails were to be used if Theseus had been killed. Theseus forgot the instructions and when Aegeus saw black sails he assumed his son was dead and dived to his death in the Aegean Sea.
5. Which Greek mythological figure is famed for flying not drowning? When he flew too high the wax attaching his wings melted and he fell into the sea and drowned. Who was he?

Answer: Icarus

The Flight of Icarus is not only a Greek myth but a song by rock group Iron Maiden. It's on their 1983 album Piece of Mind. Daedalus was Icarus' father. Minos was the son of Zeus who Daedalus trapped and scalded to death. Heraklion is the capital city of Crete.
6. Which horror character became the star of a franchise of films throughout the 1980s? At the start of the first chapter he'd already drowned although he'd go on to being the focal point of the remaining films. Name him.

Answer: Jason Voorhees

There are ten films in the original Friday 13th franchise but in the first film Jason Voorhees was just a dead boy who'd already drowned. In the sequels Jason re-appeared. The chapters became increasingly bizarre ending with Jason X where Jason went into space and the future.

In 2009 Jason returned in Marcus Nispel's re-boot simply entitled Friday 13th. He also co-starred in horror crossover Freddy Vs Jason where he battled fellow 80s horror icon Freddy Krueger.
7. Which American businessman, inventor and author was one of the world's richest men? He was also a lieutenant colonel during the Spanish-American War before drowning when the ship he was on board sank in 1912. Who was he?

Answer: John Jacob Astor IV

Astor, Guggenheim and Straus all drowned after one of the most famous shipping disasters of all time; the sinking of HMS Titanic on April 15th 1912. Although Guggenheim and Straus were businessmen they could not lay claim to fame as an inventor, author or lieutenant colonel. Lucas Barrett, an English geologist, also drowned but in 1862. Astor's pregnant wife Madeleine survived the Titanic sinking as did her maid Rosalie. Astor and his valet Victor Robbins both died.
8. Which American singer-songwriter and guitarist only released one album, "Grace", before his death? Also known as Scotty Moorhead he drowned in the Wolf River in 1997 reportedly fully clothed and singing "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin. Who was he?

Answer: Jeff Buckley

In 2008, deceased Jeff Buckley scored his first billboard #1 with a cover of the Leonard Cohen song "Hallelujah". Buckley's version became very popular after Jason Castro sang a version of the song on American Idol. It also topped the iTunes chart. When X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke released her own cover of Hallelujah in 2008 it was one of the favourites for Christmas #1. Fans of Buckley's version campaigned online and despite not being released in stores it reached #2 on the chart. Burke's version came out on top.
9. This Shakespeare character was a noblewoman of Denmark and the sweetheart of Hamlet. Her death was announced by Queen Gertrude and she drowned in a brook after falling from a willow tree. Who was she?

Answer: Ophelia

Ophelia has been portrayed by a number of famous actresses including Kate Winslet, Julia Stiles and Helena Bonham-Carter. Ophelia's famous death has resulted in many references to it; my favourite being Jurgen Vsych's 2001 film "Ophelia Learns to Swim". Cordelia appears in King Lear as Lear's daughter, which is based on the real life Queen Cordelia who was Queen of the Britons. Desdemona appeared in Othello where she eloped with the titular hero. Portia appeared in the Merchant of Venice.
10. Which couple died in the opening scenes of Tim Burton's comedy-horror "Beetlejuice" only to return as the undead, stuck in their attic while a new family moved into their house. The film starred Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. What were the names of the undead married characters?

Answer: Adam & Barbara Maitland

"Beetlejuice" was one of Tim Burton's biggest early successes. The following year he made Batman and after that "Edward Scissorhands". Adam and Barbara Maitland were played respectively by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis. While the scene-stealing Michael Keaton played Beetlejuice the married couple get the most time on screen.

It was only Baldwin's second film. He'd go on to star in "The Hunt for Red October", "Malice", "The Getaway" and "The Shadow" as his career blossomed during the early 90s. Davis went on to star in "Thelma & Louise" three years later.

The movie made her a star. Her career tailed off after the box office disaster "Cutthroat Island", which bankrupted the studio Carolco.
