Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Royal Navy captured a German submarine on 9th May 1941. On board, they found some equipment that was vital to the success of the Allied Forces. What did British intelligence do with the equipment?

Answer: They broke the Enigma Code.

The submarine contained an Enigma machine and a collection of code books. The Enigma Code was used by German forces to relay all kinds of information from military maneuvers to weather reports. Code-breakers from Poland and mathematicians Dilly Knox, John Jeffreys, Peter Twinn, and Alan Turing used what was found to break the code.
2. Which animals have nine lives, according to popular myth?

Answer: Cats

In some cultures, such as Italy and Greece, cats are said to have seven lives, and in Arabic traditions they have six. The number of lives is nine in many other cultures. Whatever the number, the myth is thought to have come from the natural agility of cats and their ability to escape danger.
3. The ninth book of the Bible begins with the birth of Hannah's eldest child. What eponymous name did she give him?

Answer: Samuel

The ninth book of the Bible is 1 Samuel and starts with Hannah's story. She was married and unable to have children until Samuel came along. She dedicated him to God and he was brought up by a priest called Eli. Hannah had five more children after Samuel was born.
4. Nine is the atomic number of this element which is used to prevent tooth decay when used in a compound. What is it?

Answer: Fluorine

Fluorine is mixed with sodium and added to toothpastes, mouthwashes, and other dental products. In many countries around the world, fluoride is added to the water supply because it can prevent cavities.
5. 'Cloud Nine' is a song by which gothic rock band?

Answer: Evanescence

Being on 'cloud nine' means being in a state of bliss. In an interview with VH1, singer and songwriter Amy Lee said that the song was about a relationship break-up - not really a situation you'd describe as cloud nine! The song is on the album 'The Open Door', released in 2006. The words 'cloud nine' aren't actually in the lyrics.
6. 'Doctor Who' is a long-running British science fiction drama. Over its 50-year history, numerous actors have played the role of the Doctor. Who played Doctor number nine for one series in 2005?

Answer: Christopher Ecclestone

'Doctor Who' began in 1963 with William Hartnell playing the first Doctor. The numerical order of actors playing the character was straightforward until the 50th anniversary special in 2013. John Hurt played a regeneration between Paul McGann (Doctor eight) and Christopher Ecclestone (Doctor nine).

The numerical continuity is maintained, however, because John Hurt's Doctor is referred to as 'the War Doctor',
7. They say that the average human pregnancy lasts nine months, but on average, how many weeks are there from a woman's last period to the birth of their baby?

Answer: 40

There are roughly four weeks in a month, give or take a few days. If you multiply that by the nine months a pregnancy is supposed to last, you come out with 36 weeks - 37 or 38 if you add up all of the extra days. Due dates are calculated from the date of the woman's last period and are roughly 40 weeks later, not 36.
8. I is the ninth letter in the English alphabet. What is the word class of 'I' in the following sentence? 'I love trivia!'

Answer: Personal pronoun

A personal pronoun is a word used in place of a noun. In English, they're often used to vary sentences so that names aren't repeated constantly. For example:

'Jodie went to her nan's house. She made apple pie, which her nan enjoyed very much.'

Sounds much better than:

'Jodie went to Jodie' nan's house. Jodie made apple pie, which Jodie's nan enjoyed very much.'
9. November was the ninth month in the Ancient Roman calendar before which two months were added to the year?

Answer: January and February

'November' comes from the Latin word 'novem', meaning 'nine'. January and February were added to the calendar year to make it closer to the solar year (the original ten months didn't fit with the seasons). They were originally called Ianuarius and Februarius.
10. What is the square root of nine?

Answer: Three

A square root is the opposite of a square number. A square number is the product of multiplying a number by itself: in this case, 3 x 3 = 9. Do the inverse and you have 9 ÷ 3 = 3, so three is the square root of nine.
