Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The northernmost point in Australia is Cape York Peninsula. In which state or territory is it located?

Answer: Queensland

Cape York Peninsula is considered to be one of the last remaining wilderness areas of Earth, so be sure to take advantage of the many outdoor activities available in the area. Fish from the local wharf or hire a boat. Take a scenic flight in a helicopter or go horseback riding. Don't forget to take one of the croc-spotting tours!

Answer: Chicago Bulls

Longley was traded to Chicago after being drafted by and playing nearly two seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was the starting center for the Chicago Bulls during the 1995-96 season, when the team set an NBA record by going 72-10 during the regular season, and during the "three-peat" championship seasons of 1996-1998.

In 2009 Longley was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
3. David Warren, a famous Australian inventor, was inspired by the death of his father in a plane crash to create what valuable instrument used in airplanes today?

Answer: Flight Data Recorder

From 1952-1983, David Warren worked in Melbourne at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation's Aeronautical Research Laboratories. After investigating the crash of commercial airliner, he came up with the idea of what is called the black box today, thinking that a voice recorder would help investigators find the cause of the crash. Even though the box was red, it was called a black box. One story is that it was a slang term used in the Royal Air Force for a navigational instrument in an airplane.

A person who witnessed one of the early demonstrations said, "What a wonderful black box"! It is painted either red or orange because it is easier to locate that way. In 2002, Warren became an Officer in the Order of Australia.

6. The Australian bush poet Banjo Patterson wrote "Waltzing Matilda" and which of the following titles?

Answer: The Man from Snowy River

Red, white, and blue were featured on the first Coat of Arms of the Commonwealth in 1908, and blue and gold are featured on the present-day Coat of Arms. Green and gold were chosen, however, because of the many species of wattle that adorn the Australian landscape.
