Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Royal Australian Navy, what does HMAS stand for?

Answer: His/Her Majesty's Australian Ship

As Australia is a part of the Commonwealth, we serve the British Monarch. Ergo, His or Her Majesty's Australian Ship (depending on whether the monarch is male or female).
2. In the Australian Navy, who should salute an officer first (meaning, the officer salutes second)?

Answer: All of these

A junior or senior sailor should ALWAYS salute an officer first.
3. Where was the first Australian Navy's guided missile frigate (FFG) built?

Answer: U.S.A.

The Australian guided missile frigate (or as it is simply called- FFG) is an Oliver Hazzard Perry class frigate.
The normal interpretation of FFG from a sailor's point of view was always "(flipping) fast gunboat".
4. Where would you, in the Australian Navy, go to the loo?

Answer: The head

It is taken from the sailing ship days when the "Seats of Ease" were in the bow or head of the ship. They were very effective self-flushing toilets.
Also, as I was told this term apparently is derived from sailors spending so much of their time with their "heads" in the bowl.
5. In Australian Navy, if you were going to fight a fire onboard your ship, what clothing would you always have with you?

Answer: Anti-flash

Anti flash is the hood and gloves that are worn to help prevent burns.
6. On the GDP of an FFG what would you find?

Answer: CAS

The GDP is the gunnery directional platform.
The CIC is the combat information center.
The COC is the central office complex.
The brig is a detention center.
And on the GDP you will find the CAS, "Combined Antenna System".
7. What is, in the Australian Navy (and many other Navies) the acronymm of the defence weapon that will provide some safety from a missile attack?

Answer: CIWS

CIWS stands for Close-In Weapons System. Also called Phalanx, it can fire over 3000 rounds per minute.
8. In the Australian Navy what size is the main "gun" on an FFG?

Answer: 76mm

The 76mm is the three inch multi purpose gun.
9. On an Australian Navy vessel, where would you go to have a kip?

Answer: The mess

A kip is a term for sleep. Mess is what we call the living quarters.
10. In the Australian Navy, what would you do with your scran?

Answer: Eat it

Stuff cooked by the Royal Australian Navy. scran.
(although we didn't say "stuff". I had to improvise.)
