Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Since 2007, disturbing discoveries have been made along a beach in British Columbia. What has been washing up on shore that's far out of the realm of the ordinary?

Answer: severed feet

Amazingly, the human feet are found wearing running shoes. Coroners have been able to match up some of the feet that have washed up on shore in the same general vicinity. Forensic anthropologists believe that natural disasters explain the mystery. Why the coast of British Columbia? The pattern of tides and currents that occur along this Canadian province explains the proliferation of misplaced human feet.
2. The hunt for this mystery man, who jumped from an airplane along with a bag of cash, has stumped authorities and the general public since it happened in 1971. Who was he?

Answer: D.B. Cooper

Stories and songs have been written about the man who called himself Dan Cooper. Who was this thief who parachuted from a plane along with a bag containing $200,000 in cash, some of which was later found? Was he Richard Lepsy, a husband and father who never returned home after work, or Duane Webber who, on his deathbed, confessed to his wife that he was the real Dan Cooper? There is no shortage of suspects. D.B. Cooper was never found or at the very least those who knew him have kept his identity a secret.
3. In 1948 on Somerton Beach, South Australia, near the city of Adelaide, the body of an unidentified man washed up on shore. By what name was he known?

Answer: Somerton Man

Police found a piece of paper, taken from the poem "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam," sewn into a pocket. The words read 'Tamám Shud,' which in Persian means "ended." A suitcase was later discovered and linked to the unknown man. Labels had been removed from clothing and other items which led police to theorize that the man was a spy.

At that time Soviet agents were suspected of living in Australia. Since those postwar years, forensic science has come a long way. Doctors now believe that Somerton Man was poisoned, most likely with digitalis.

The reason for his death remains a mystery.
4. In early 1959, a group of nine Russian graduate students decided to hike through the Ural Mountains of Russia. When they hadn't returned, a search party was organized to discover what had happened to them. What they found was mind-boggling and remains a mystery to this day. This strange incident is known as what?

Answer: Dyatlov Pass Incident

The incident was named for the leader of the group, Igor Dyatlov. Searchers discovered that the hikers had cut their way out of the tent from the inside. Most of the bodies were found down hill from their tent, while other bodies were discovered farther away.

The hikers were partially dressed as though they had left in a hurry. Some bodies were found without shoes. Keep in mind this was Russia in February with sub-zero temperatures. Everything from military testing to avalanches and paranormal activity were put forth as explanations for the deaths. Author Donnie Eichar wrote a well-researched book about the incident titled "Dead Mountain." He believes that science, more specifically infrasound created by wind, is to blame.

He claims that this infrasound produces panic in humans, resulting in abnormal behavior.
5. On Christmas Eve, 1945, a home in rural West Virginia burned to the ground. Two adults and nine children were living at the home at the time. The parents, George and Jennie, and four of the children made it out alive. The fate of the remaining five children is still a mystery. What was the name of this unlucky family?

Answer: Sodder

There are many mysteries connected to this tragedy. The parents believed the children were kidnapped and the house deliberately set on fire. The authorities concluded that the five children perished in the fire, although there was little evidence to support this. Several people reported seeing the children in a car after the fire. Mysterious events leading up to the fire only added to the mystery.

Some felt that the Sodder family had been targeted because George had openly complained to his Italian community about Mussolini. Keep in mind that this happened at the end of World War II. George and Jennie Sodder went to their graves never learning the fate of their five children.
6. One of the strangest cases of drowning occurred in 2013 in downtown Los Angeles, California. A 21-year-old Canadian college student drowned in a water tank on top of the Cecil Hotel. What was her name?

Answer: Elisa Lam

The case drew international attention for two reasons: Elisa was Canadian and the Cecil Hotel itself has an unsavory reputation. Her death is very strange and filled with eerie coincidences. How could a petite woman scale an eight-foot water tank, open the lid, remove her clothes and shoes, jump in and drown? The coroner declared her death an accidental drowning. YouTube shows CCTV footage of Elisa in an elevator with a door that at first refuses to close.

The footage is reportedly the last time Elisa Lam was seen alive.
7. In a southwestern region of the United States, a strange phenomenon has continued to baffle curiosity seekers and science buffs since it was first reported in 1883. This phenomenon has been referred to as the "Marfa Ghost Lights." In which southwestern state can these mysterious lights be seen?

Answer: Texas

The town of Marfa is located in western Texas. Scientists believe the orbs of light are the reflection of car lights. However, the problem with that reasoning is there were no cars in 1883 when the lights were first observed. Others believe it's a mirage or optical illusion known as "Fata Morgana." Could the explanation be swamp gases? Again, the problem with that line of thinking is there are no swamps in this high desert region. Perhaps it's atmospheric pressure or lights from UFOs? The lights have been described as bright multi-colored orbs that jump around, disappearing and reappearing at different locations.

At any one time you may not see them. Even with today's technology, the lights remain a mystery.
8. In 1913, during the Mexican Revolution, which well-known American author vanished in Mexico without a trace?

Answer: Ambrose Bierce

Bierce was known for his sardonic views of human nature as evidenced by his classic "An Unabridged Devil's Dictionary." He is also known for "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," a haunting short story where illusion and reality co-exist. As for his disappearance, it is generally believed that he either became a casualty of the violence during the Mexican Revolution or he committed suicide.
9. Between 1966 and 1967, numerous sightings of a terrifying creature were reported in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The appearances coincided with the collapse of a bridge just before Christmas in 1967. What did residents call this red-eyed, flying creature?

Answer: Mothman

With a body and legs similar to that of a man, red glowing eyes, and bat-like wings, Mothman terrified residents of this small town for a year. The town sheriff was skeptical. He believed the creature to be a large sandhill crane. Ufologists believed Mothman was an alien being.

After the Silver Bridge collapsed, killing 46 people, Mothman disappeared. The question remains to this day: Did Mothman come to warn residents of Point Pleasant of the impending collapse or was he the cause of it? Since 2002, the residents have been busy celebrating Mothman's visit to their town with a weeklong festival each September.

A metallic statue of Mothman was erected in 2003 and a museum was built a few years later.
10. Throughout history, planes, ships, and the passengers inside them have disappeared without a trace. Usually the wreckage is discovered. However, in the North Atlantic Ocean, between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, a cluster of aircraft and ships have disappeared without a trace. The mysterious disappearances have been occurring for many decades. What is this area known as?

Answer: Bermuda Triangle

Due to its location, the area known as the Bermuda Triangle, or Devil's Triangle, is heavily used which might partly explain the high activity of unusual occurrences in that area. Some explanations for the disappearances include alien abductions, time warps, violent storms, and human error.

There are, of course, skeptics who believe that the Bermuda Triangle is no more mysterious than anywhere else in the world.
