Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Peter Parker's favourite card game should be Spider Solitaire. On which version of PC operating system "Windows" was this first available?

Answer: Windows '98

First available as part of the Windows '98 Microsoft Plus! package, Spider Solitaire has since been included on every version of Windows up to Windows 10, apart from Windows 2000 and Windows 8, for which it was available to download from the Windows store.
By 2005, it was the most played game on Windows PCs and while the real life game usually uses two decks of cards, the PC version allows four decks to be used and features different levels of difficulty.
2. When watching football, Peter Parker would be a fan of the Scottish league club, based in Glasgow and nicknamed "The Spiders". Which team would he follow?

Answer: Queen's Park

Queen's Park, formed in 1867, are the oldest association football club in Scotland, and play their home games at Hampden Park, a 51,000 all seater stadium which is also the home of the Scottish national team.
Unfortunately for Queen's Park, they have not played in the top division for many years, and while in Scottish League Two, they average attendances of between only 600 and 700.
The club is nicknamed "The Spiders" due to the black and white design of their club badge, which resembles a spider web, and although they may be few compared to Glasgow neighbours Celtic and Rangers, their fans, known as the "Irn Bru Firm", after the famous Scottish drink, are fiercely loyal.

Third Lanark were also a Glasgow club, unfortunately dissolved in 1967 after years of mismanagement, while Hibernian are based in Edinburgh.
3. If Peter Parker needs a car, surely he would choose the open top version of the British made 720S, known as the Spider. Which manufacturer made this 341 km/h (212 mph) super car?

Answer: McLaren

The McLaren 720S hit showrooms in 2017 as a replacement for the 650S and while the price of a 650S was just under £200,000, the 720S retailed at around £210,000.
For your money though, you not only got that amazing speed but also ten percent better fuel economy, with the 720S managing 18 miles to the gallon in city driving and 36 mpg on the open road.
The Spider version of the car was introduced in December 2018 and features an electric roof, which will take just 11 seconds to operate, and can be operated while travelling at 50 km/h (31 mph) if you should encounter rain. Prices for the Spider when it went on sale started at £237,000.
4. Even superheroes need to go shopping. Peter Parker would of course pay with a 100 bolívares note, featuring a brown spider monkey on the reverse. Which country issued this banknote?

Answer: Venezuela

Hyperinflation in 2018 led to monetary reforms in Venezuela and the bolivar fuerte was replaced by the bolivar soberano.
The reverse of these new banknotes all featured Venezuelan wildlife such as the giant anteater (10 bolivares), jaguar (20 bolivares) and the national bird of the country, the Venezuelan troupial (500 bolivares).
By 2019, further inflation meant that all of these notes, other than the 500 bolivares, were almost worthless and refused by most businesses and three new notes were issued in denominations of 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 bolivares.
5. Surely Peter Parker is a history buff, and if so, you would expect his favourite historical person to be the man dubbed "l'universelle aragne" or "the universal spider". Which king of France was this?

Answer: Louis XI

Louis XI, king of France between 1461 and 1483 was also known as Louis the Prudent and Louis the Cunning as well as the "universal spider" due to his talent for spinning webs of conspiracies, which ultimately made him many enemies including his own father and brother as well as King Edward IV of England.
His shrewd dealings meant he was able to expand the power of the royalty, at the expense of the dukes who had once thought him their ally. When he died he left behind a strong healthy monarchy and a country more united than it possibly ever had been.
6. If Peter Parker is a music fan, I would expect him to have a soft spot for the David Bowie alter ego that was backed by the Spiders from Mars. Which one was it?

Answer: Ziggy Stardust

Ziggy Stardust, created in 1972 for the Bowie album, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars", is one of Bowie's most enduring alter egos, probably because of the amount of work Bowie put into the creation.
This wasn't just a great album, this was a whole new persona, androgynous and hedonistic, with an appearance that was subtle and understated yet at the same time managed to "out-glam" the likes of Marc Bolan.
This was the real deal, a space traveller who came to Earth and became a prophet for future star men, yet, just a year after Ziggy appeared among us, Bowie killed the character, announcing at a show at Hammersmith Odeon in 1973, that this was to be Ziggy's last appearance.
It is amazing, and a testament to Bowie's vision, that fifty years after Ziggy, he and the Spiders from Mars are still remembered, even though they graced us with their presence for just 12 months.
7. Education is very important, even to superheroes. The sports teams of which university would Peter Parker surely approve of, as they are known as "the Spiders"?

Answer: University of Richmond

University of Richmond in Virginia was established in 1830 and the school's athletic teams began using the Spiders nickname in the late 1890s, supposedly after it was used to describe baseball pitcher Puss Ellyson.
The athletic teams have had success in most sports, including both men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's golf, field hockey and soccer.
Sporting alumni of the university include NFL stars Mike Bragg and Marc Megna, CFL players Eric Ward and Jacob Ruby and MLB stars Renie Martin and Lew Burdette.
8. The "Lycoris radiata" plant is the colour of Peter Parker's suit and commonly known as the red spider lily. To which family of plants does it belong?

Answer: Amaryllidaceae (Amaryllis)

The red spider lily, also known as the hell flower, is native to China, Korea and Nepal and it was from these countries that it found its way to Japan. From there it was exported to USA in 1854 and then the rest of the world, although as it's susceptible to frost, in countries like UK it is usually only grown in greenhouses. There are many legends surrounding the plant in Japan, including that when you meet someone you will never see again, they will bloom in the meeting place.

The flowers are often used at funerals in Japan and Buddhist monks also plant them on graves as a tribute the deceased; this association with death means that they are a flower one should never include in a bouquet.
9. After all of his adventures, Peter Parker will surely relax with a cold drink. Perhaps a nice ice cream float would hit the spot, but where in the world is this commonly known as a spider?

Answer: Australia and New Zealand

The root beer float is believed to have been invented in 1874 by Robert McCay Green in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after he ran out of ice for his drinks, so began selling them with ice cream instead.
The term "spider" for a beverage originally meant a mixture of brandy and ginger beer, but by the 1940s it had come to mean an ice cream float in Australia and New Zealand, although the reason is unclear.
The two main schools of thought are either that once the carbonated beverage hits the ice cream it forms a pattern like a spider's web, or that a spider is needed to chase down all the flies one has swallowed.
Whatever the reason, nothing beats it on a hot summers day.
10. Peter Parker had better hope his travels don't take him to Skuon, well known as Spiderville due to the market at which tourists can choose from many stalls selling deep fried, spiced spiders. In which country is Skuon and its yummy fare?

Answer: Cambodia

Although spiders are eaten in many areas, the spiced, fried spiders at Skuon market are considered a delicacy, although if you are just a little wary of spiders, be warned that some of these tempting morsels are as big as the palm of a man's hand.
Many of the vendors will have buckets of the larger spiders, still alive, so you can pick the tastiest looking tarantula to have fried up, and even pose for photos with it prior to cooking, although that may be taking the whole "playing with your food" thing a bit too far.
If you do want to visit, Skuon is approximately 55 kilometres (34 miles) north of the capital Phnom Penh, and while the legs are said to be a tasty cross between chicken and cod (pretty sure cod don't have legs), don't bite the abdomen as this is full of innards and bodily fluids.
You can even wash your meal down with rice wine infused with spiders if you so desire. Thanks but I'll pass on that.
