Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am the darling of the paleontological and dental professions. I have been found (among other places) in the La Brea tar pits and am commonly known as a Sabre Tooth Tiger. What is my official scientific name?

Answer: Smilodon

My scientific name is Smilodon. I am the state fossil of California (no kidding!) Everyone say cheese for the selfie!
2. A boar is a big, typically bad-tempered animal that has large tusks. Throughout history, the hunt for a grumpy boar is a symbol of manhood and strength (Hmmm, perhaps the boar wouldn't be so grumpy if it had regular dental check-ups to solve that annoying tooth-ache.) What is NOT a traditional method of hunting a wild boar?

Answer: Rifles from a hide near water

During his time in 19th century India, Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts, wrote a book about this "sport" - creepily enough he thought that he, his horse and the boar all enjoyed this hunt to the death. Elephants and dogs were indeed used to track wild boars.

Many of today's breeds such as Great Danes, Boxers and Pit Bulls were used to bait and worry the boar until a person could take the kill shot. (As an aside, some folks that I know do go bow hunting with bay and hunting dogs.)
3. My exploits in 1890 are recorded by Bram Stoker. I had an affinity for blood and continue to be a character in many Hollywood scripts. In most, I have elongated canine teeth. Who am I?

Answer: Count Dracula

Count Dracula rules the canines! The other options are characters in the original Stoker book, "Dracula". Harker was the unfortunate property manager that travelled from London to settle Dracula's deed to his castle, Lucy was a lovely young lady with several suitors and Quincy was an American cowboy that was in love with her. (Read the book to discover what was used to REALLY kill Dracula - it is a surprise!)
4. I shed approximately 35,000 teeth during my lifetime and replace them with thousands more. A dentist would love me, unfortunately I live in a non-conducive environment for a dental practice. Who am I?

Answer: Ground Shark

The ground shark belongs to the order Carcharhiniformes which is the largest order of sharks. (I knew you wanted to know that...(not.) The other foils were just silly on my part. So far as I know, Moby Dick and a large mouth bass do not display that many teeth.
5. President George Washington is known for having false teeth made of unique items. Which of the following is an INCORRECT material he used for teeth?

Answer: Wood

When George Washington became president in 1789, history says he only had one original tooth left. Dr. John Greenwood of New York devised an early denture of hippopotamus teeth, gold wire and screws, ivory and human teeth for President Washington. The wooden teeth story is just a myth. (Please remember, brush and floss often!)

(Citation - Smithsonian Journal, November 7, 2014 - author Colin Schultz)
6. My neighbor's daughter is between 17 and 23 years old. (I know...I can never remember as the years pass so fast.) She is having a problem with her third molar teeth also known as Dens serotinus. What are these commonly called?

Answer: Wisdom teeth

The wisdom teeth are known as the third molars. They are the "most posterior teeth in human dentition...often fused..." and therefore often removed. As we evolve, fewer people develop wisdom teeth...I only had three and my daughter has none. Perhaps she has achieved the apex of the wisdom tooth challenge!
7. Swimgirl wore braces to straighten her teeth. What is the earliest civilization to demonstrate this cosmetic device?

Answer: Etruscans

In 400-500 B.C. Aristotle and Hippocrates were commenting about the practice of wrapping gold wire and cat gut around teeth to close a gap. According to the AAO (American Association of Orthodontics), individuals uncovered from this era showed attempts to correct dental problems. Just in case you wondered, the Etruscans were a military, wealthy and refined civilization that lived before their assimilation by the Romans circa 300 BC (reference Titus Livcus (Livy) and Servius Tullius (historical documents.)
8. Do teeth contain RNA?

Answer: Yes

Hi Dad - Hi Mom. Thanks for sharing your DNA and RNA with me. (If you wish to visit a lovely scientific site that describes this union, please visit "RNA Research.edu") Otherwise, the other answers are incorrect. (Just in case you were wondering, RNA stands for Ribonucleic Acid which typically is found in a single chain folded into itself rather than the paired double chain state found in DNA.)
9. Toothpaste has been around a very long time. It has been referenced in a 9th century Iraq manuscript by Ziryab, a fashion designer and musician. Which of the following was an ingredient in early toothpaste that would be found in today's product?

Answer: Hydrogen Peroxide

All of the foils were indeed included in earlier forms of toothpaste. Yep, even dragon's blood - it is a resin that was combined with cinnamon and burnt alum. In an 18th century British and American custom, both this and a mixture including burnt bread were in common use to clean those cuspids!
10. I am a polyphyodont which means my teeth rotate during phases of my lifetime. I have 26 teeth - not including my distinctive incisors. My new teeth grow in the back and push out the old ones. What am I?

Answer: Elephant

Elephants' incisors are their wonderful tusks. Just as humans are right and left-handed, elephants are right and left "tusked" favoring one side over the other! Please support efforts to prevent ivory poaching and ensure these lovely social animals continue to thrive in their natural environment.
