Pull My Finger Trivia Quiz

Grampa used to ask us kids to "pull my finger" and when we did, he would pass gas causing us kids to laugh hysterically, and cause my Mom to shake her head with chagrin. Hoping not to offend, here is my quiz about flatulence.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What animal produces the most gas?

Answer: termites

Because of the sheer number of termites in the world and the fact that they need a lot of bacteria to digest wood, they are considered by many scientists to be a major contributor to global warming. There are actually methane sensors created to detect if your structure has termites.
2. What is flatus?

Answer: the mixture of gases expelled through flatulence

Pronounced "flay-tus", nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen and methane are the most common gases released, but methane and hydrogen are the flammable ones. There is actually a patent for a toy missile which is propelled from igniting the gases captured from flatulence. A great toy to get the neighbor's kid.
3. People in higher altitudes experience a varied type of flatulence.

Answer: True

Due to differences in atmospheric pressure, the volume of gases emitted through flatulence in higher altitudes is greater, although the mass remains constant. Among mountain climbers, it is referred to as HAG- high altitude gas.
4. Some people can "fart at will".

Answer: True

There are actually "professional farters" who put on shows exhibiting their prowess in regards to flatulence. Mr. Methane is one such showman. I can't wait for his next CD release.
5. There has been an historic legal battle between two phone applications that mimic the sounds of flatulence. What are the two applications?

Answer: Air-O-Matic's "Pull My Finger" and InfoMedia's "I-Fart Mobile"

This had to be the most fun question I ever made. Air-O-Matic was awarded the trademark "pull my finger" and InfoMedia had been using that phrase to advertise its i-phone application. Air-O-Matic threatened to sue. What a crazy world.
6. What is borborygmus?

Answer: stomach growling or rumbling

Borborygmus is the sound of gases traveling through the stomach or upper intestines. These poor gases will probably never reach the high (or low) status of flatulence, however.
7. New Zealand proposed a "flatulence tax" to assist in controlling greenhouse gas emissions.

Answer: True

The Agricultural Emissions Research Levy- commonly though errantly known as the flatulence tax would tax methane emissions from farm animals. It is misleading because most methane gases from cattle are released through burping.
8. BEANO is a product developed in 1990 which minimizes flatulence by reducing gases in the digestive tract. However, which scientist wrote an essay suggesting a similar product much earlier?

Answer: Benjamin Franklin

In the 1780's, Franklin derisively wrote "A Letter to the Royal Academy" suggesting the scientists of the day spend their research on developing a drug that would make the odor of flatus "not only inoffensible, but agreeable as perfumes". He ends with a pun saying that compared to this, other scientific inquiries were "scarcely worth a fart-hing".

He was not a fan of the academic scientific society.
9. In a classic scene from this movie, cowboys are sitting around a campfire eating beans and passing gas. Name it.

Answer: Blazing Saddles

"Blazing Saddles" stars Gene Wilder and Cleavon Little. It's a Mel Brooks movie, with film icon Slim Pickens stealing the "flatulence" scene.

Other answer choices: "The Frisco Kid" is a western comedy also starring Gene Wilder. "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas" is a musical comedy starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds. And "Dirty Dingus Magee" is a western comedy starring Frank Sinatra as the title character.
10. How often does the average person flatulate?

Answer: twelve to twenty times a day

According to the "eMedicine Health" website (2009), the average person produces about one to three pints of flatus a day. This occurs in approximately 14 flatulent episodes.
