Thematic Objects Trivia Questions

1. What is the name of the female firefighter in kid's TV show "Fireman Sam" and the love interest of Leonard in comedy, "The Big Bang Theory"?

From Quiz
Money Makes The World Go Round

Answer: Penny

Penny is a shortened version of Penelope, who in Homer's "Odyssey" was the wife of Odysseus and remained faithful to him for 20 years, while he was away fighting in the Trojan War, despite having many suitors. Another Penelope from Greek mythology was the daughter of Dryops, who according to some versions of the myth, was the mother of Pan. The penny was a UK currency, until decimalisation in 1971. 7. What features typically characterize a military tank?

From Quiz "Tanks" for the Memories

Answer: armoured, heavy fire power, moves on a continuous track

The armored fighting vehicle known as the tank dramatically and permanently changed military strategy and warfare in the first half of the twentieth century. The first tanks were designed by William Foster & Co. in Lincoln, England in 1915, and France developed its version soon after. Both countries desperately sought a way to put an end to trench warfare, the horrendously draining stalemated situation which developed along the front lines in World War I. The continuous track instead of more vulnerable wheels was a key breakthrough, allowing the vehicles to traverse rough terrain and simply roll over enemy obstacles. The prototype of the first generation of British tanks was "Little Willie", and it can still be viewed at The Tank Museum in Bovington, England. "Willie" led to the development of the Mark I tanks, which were the first tanks to see combat, during the Battle of the Somme in September of 1916.

From Quiz Too Young to Dye

Answer: Cochineal

Native to South America, Mexico and Arizona, cochineals can usually be located on those rather hideous looking prickly pear plants, and are reasonably easy to harvest. They are simply brushed off into a container and, after being drowned in hot water, are left to dry out. The female insect, that is. She's the one that produces the beautiful crimson and scarlet dyes for which the cochineal is so famous. After drying, the bodies are then ground down into a powder, which is mixed in various solutions to produce the dye. It takes almost one hundred thousand of these little creatures to make one kilogram of their still highly sought after dye which was once far more valuable before the advent of synthetic dyes than it is today. Peru and the Canary Islands are the largest manufacturers of cochineal dye in the 21st century, and have a thriving market in France, Italy and Japan.
