Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Which of these links foxes and dogs?

Answer: They are from the biological family Canidae.

Dogs and foxes belong to the family Canidae, along with wolves, jackals, and coyotes.

There is some debate about whether dogs are omnivores or carnivores. Their teeth suggest that they are designed to eat meat, but their intestines are longer than other carnivores' digestive tracts. (It is harder to break down plant material, so omnivores and herbivores have larger intestines.) Foxes are definitely omnivores as they eat fruit and berries, as well as small mammals and birds, and insects.
2. Sphinx of black quartz, judge my vow. What was the answer to the sphinx's riddle: "Which creature has one voice and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?"

Answer: A man

According to Ancient Greek legend, the sphinx landed in Thebes in Greece. Positioned at the side of the road, she posed a riddle to all passers-by. If they couldn't answer, she killed and ate them. The riddle was, "Which creature has one voice and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?" Oedipus worked out the answer.

A human will crawl on all fours as a baby, then walk on two legs, and then using a walking stick in their old age, which is the third leg. Clever!
3. Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs. What number is equal to five dozen?

Answer: 60

The word "dozen" is etymologically linked to the Latin ("duodecim") and Old French ("dozaine") for the number twelve. A dozen is a group of twelve, and twelve multiplied by five is sixty. The word can be pluralised as in the sentence, "There were dozens of people there." It can also be used to refer to six in the phrase "half-dozen". And if you have a group of thirteen, you can use the term "baker's dozen".
4. The quick onyx goblin jumps over the lazy dwarf. In which series of books would you find goblins and dwarves?

Answer: Harry Potter

In JK Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, the goblins were more prominent than the dwarves as they were the workforce within Gringotts Bank. They were a very intelligent race who could cast their own kind of magic. Goblins were also known for their excellent metalwork, including the Sword of Gryffindor. Dwarves also appeared, though briefly, in "The Chamber of Secrets". Gilderoy Lockhart employed a group of dwarves dressed as Cupid to run around Hogwarts for Valentine's Day.
5. How razorback-jumping frogs can level six piqued gymnasts! Which nation won the women's gymnastics team gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics?

Answer: USA

As far as I know, there weren't any razorback-jumping frogs at the Rio Olympics in 2016. There was, however, a successful American gymnastics team. Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian, and Aly Raisman won gold for the women's team all-round event. Four of them also won medals in individual events.

The most successful American gymnast was Simone Biles, who won bronze on the balance beam, as well as gold in the individual all-round event, the vault and the floor, all in addition to her team gold. That's some talent!
6. Cozy lummox gives a job to smart squid who asks for a pen. Which sweet treat is the same shape as a giant squid's brain?

Answer: Doughnut

In an unusual quirk of nature, the giant squid has a doughnut-shaped brain. Even more bizarrely, its gullet goes right through the hole in the middle. That means the giant squid can't swallow anything too big. Luckily, it has a beak between its arms and tentacles which means it can rip its prey into tiny, edible shreds.
7. Watch "Jeopardy!", Alex Trebek's fun TV quiz game. Which year was "Jeopardy!" first aired?

Answer: 1964

"Jeopardy!" was an unusual format for a quiz show because contestants were given the answers and it was their job to come up with the question to match it. The quiz show first aired in 1964 when Bob Hultgren was the host. Alex Trebek, a Canadian-American TV personality, began presenting the show in 1984.

His work on "Jeopardy!" led to him being inducted onto the Canadian Walk of Fame in 2006.
8. Amazingly few discotheques provide jukeboxes. Which of these musicians was given the unofficial title "Queen of Disco"?

Answer: Donna Summer

Donna Summer had a music career that spanned decades. Her debut album, "Lady of the Night", was released in 1974. Her second album was "Love to Love You Baby" and the single of the same name reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Despite its popularity, it was banned on some radio stations and on the BBC in the UK because it was considered too risque.
9. Vexed nymphs go for a quick waltz job. Which style of dance is the waltz?

Answer: Ballroom

The waltz dates back to at least the 16th century in Europe, specifically in the area that is now Germany and Austria. In fact, the word "waltz" comes from the German word "walzen" meaning "revolve". A waltz is usually performed by a couple who face each other and turn rhythmically as they move across the ballroom floor. Other ballroom dances include the quickstep, tango, and foxtrot.
10. The five boxing wizards jump quickly. How many Olympic gold medals did boxing wizard Muhammad Ali win?

Answer: 1

With very few losses to his name, Muhammad Ali is widely regarded as one of the most successful boxers of all time. He was the first to win the world heavyweight championship three times, and though he retained that title again and again, he only competed in one Olympic Games.

In 1960, Ali won gold as an amateur boxer in the 175-pound category. After winning gold in Rome, he set off on a professional boxing career. He returned to the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 to light the flame that started the Games.
