Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these countries describes itself as being 'the sunny side of the Alps'?

Answer: Slovenia

The Republic of Slovenia has borders with Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Austria, with a coastline on the Adriatic Sea. As you'd expect from the nickname, it is mountainous and borders the Julian Alps. Mount Triglav is the highest point of both Slovenia and the Julian Alps. Slovenia shares the Istrian Peninsula with Italy and Croatia.
2. Spain's Costa del Sol has several popular tourist destinations, including which of these?

Answer: Torremolinos

The Costa del Sol, or Sun Coast in English, is on the southern coast of Spain, on the Mediterranean Sea. Torremolinos was originally a fishing village, and became one of the first tourist destinations when tourism expanded in the 1950s. The largest city in the area is Malaga, birthplace of Pablo Picasso.

Tenerife is one of the Canary Islands and Magaluf is on Majorca. Benidorm is on the east coast of Spain. All of them attract many visitors each year.
3. Even the UK has a resort which describes itself as 'sunny' in its advertising. Which West Sussex holiday destination is it?

Answer: Worthing

I'm not entirely convinced that anywhere in the UK can claim more sun than other destinations, but 'Sunny Worthing' has been used as a slogan for many years. Worthing is located on the south coast, not far from Brighton.

The other tourist destinations are in Devon (Torquay), Lancashire (Blackpool) and Essex (Clacton-on-Sea).
4. Australia's Sunshine Coast is located in which state?

Answer: Queensland

The Sunshine Coast borders the Pacific Ocean, and is situated north of Brisbane, Queensland's capital city. It is a popular tourist destination with attractions including Australia Zoo, founded by Steve Irwin, and numerous beaches. The area is also renowned for its many national parks, including the Mapleton Falls and Glass House Mountains National Parks.
5. In which Bantustan, now part of South Africa, was the Sun City Resort founded in 1979?

Answer: Bophuthatswana

The significance of the region being classed as independent by the apartheid regime of South Africa in the 1970s was that the laws banning gambling and adult entertainment in South Africa did not apply. The resort, set up by Sol Kerzner, took advantage of this. To the rest of the world, Sun City was seen as being located in South Africa, which was subject to an official United Nations boycott due to the country's refusal to recognise its non-white inhabitants.

The other options are independent countries - Basutoland became Lesotho in 1966 and Bechuanaland was renamed as Botswana, also in 1966.
6. Described as 'city of the sun', Naples is overlooked by which ominous volcano?

Answer: Vesuvius

The capital of the Campania region of Italy, Naples is one of the country's largest cities with only Rome and Milan being bigger. The city's initial settlement was by Greeks, rather than Romans, and the city still retains some of the early influences. Vesuvius, best known for the major eruption of 79AD which buried Pompeii and Herculaneum, is around 9km (just under 6 miles) from Naples.

Etna is located on the island of Sicily, Stromboli is on an island off the coast of Sicily and Ustica is a volcanic island also near Sicily.
7. 'The Land of the Midnight Sun' refers to places which lie in the Arctic, or Antarctic, Circles. The city of Tromso is one of them and is part of which country?

Answer: Norway

During the longest days of the year, in June in the northern hemisphere and December in the southern, the sun can be seen for all twenty-four hours of the day in areas within the two regions. Tromso is one of the largest inhabited areas to lie within the Arctic Circle, along with Murmansk and Norilsk, both in Russia.

Other countries which can lay claim to midnight sun are Canada, Iceland and the USA (Alaska), along with all of the listed options and Greenland, officially part of Denmark. The Antarctic has no permanent settlements, although there are research stations located there.
8. Heliopolis, meaning 'city of the sun' in Greek, was one of the main cities of ancient Egypt. It is now part of which of these?

Answer: Cairo

Heliopolis was the capital of one of the regions of ancient Egypt and was a centre for the worship of the sun god, Atum. In modern times, the ancient city is buried several metres below northern Cairo, although an obelisk from the temple of Ra-Atum, can be seen as a surviving relic. At a height of 21 metres (69 feet), it's hard to miss.
9. Iriomote Island is part of Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun. It is renowned for having a beach with sand (shells) of which unusual shape?

Answer: Star

The island is in the Okinawa Prefecture and is known for being the home of the rare wildcat called the Iriomote cat. The beach on which the unusual shells are found is located in the north of Iriomote and its Japanese name, Hoshizuna-no-Hama, translates as 'star sand beach'. The grains are tiny - measuring less than a millimetre - and are actually the exoskeletons of a type of protist.
10. Florida is the USA's 'Sunshine State' Which city has the motto 'Where Florida Begins'?

Answer: Jacksonville

Although Tallahassee is the capital of Florida, Jacksonville is the largest and had the biggest population. It is located in the north of the state, on the St Johns River. Florida has been known as the 'Sunshine State' for many years, with the name being officially adopted in 1970.
