Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the common name for 'bovine spongiform encephalopathy'?

Answer: mad cow disease

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is commonly referred to as mad cow disease. The other diseases are real. Hoof and mouth, and cowpox are better known than wooden tongue, which is caused by bacteria and hardens the tongue.
2. What do Bob Barker, Steve McQueen, Donnie & Marie Osmond, and Priscilla Presley have in common?

Answer: Learned martial arts from Chuck Norris

According to his bio at http://www.chucknorris.com/html/biog.html Chuck Norris taught martial arts to each of these celebrities at one time or another.
3. What does the letter 'T' stand for in 1980's toughman Mr. T's name?

Answer: Tureaud

I "pity the fool" who don't know Mr. T's real name is Lawrence Tureaud. T was born in Chicago and played B.A. Baracus on 'The A Team' from 1983-1987.
4. While you are eating a sweet treat you look at the ingredients label, it reads: Sugar, corn syrup, cocoa, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, condensed skim milk, whey, artificial and natural flavors, soya lecithin. What are you eating?

Answer: Chocolate Tootsie Roll Pop

The Tootsie Pop was introduced in 1931. According to the company itself, Tootsie produces 16 million+ suckers per day. That's more than anyone else in the world.
5. What is the slang term for a resident of Michigan's Upper Peninsula?

Answer: Yooper

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is often referred to as the U.P. 'Yooper' derives from the sound of the two letters YOU-PEE, hence Yuper. There is even a comedic recording group from there called Da Yoopers.
6. What does RCA stand for?

Answer: Radio Corporation of America

The Radio Corporation of America was founded in 1919. The company has undergone changes over the ensuing decades, but still remains a hugely successful company today.
7. Based on modern boundaries, how many of the 13 original U.S. colonies border the Atlantic Ocean?

Answer: 12

Though it is rich in American history, Pennsylvania is the only one of the 13 original colonies to not border the Atlantic Ocean.
8. What Pro Football Hall-of-Famer earned the nickname "Crazy Legs" for his odd style of running?

Answer: Elroy Hirsch

Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch got the nickname from a reporter when he was playing college ball in 1942. The terms 'demented duck' and 'crazy legs' were used in the article. My guess is that Mr. Hirsch is glad people latched on to "Crazy Legs", because Elroy "Demented Duck" Hirsch doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
9. What creature is prominently featured on Bhutan's national flag?

Answer: dragon

A white dragon holding jewels (possibly pearls) in its feet on a yellow and orange flag represent the country of Bhutan. The local name for the country is Druk-Gyal-Khab or Druk-Yul, meaning "Land of the Dragon".
10. What was the date of the first issue of Time Magazine to display a UPC?

Answer: July 11, 1977

Scanners were not in widespread use when Time Magazine added those odd looking (at the time) black and white stripes to the cover. Today the UPC, Universal Product Code, is used on a much wider scale. Just as a side note, the cover story that week was about youth crime.
