quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your friend says, "I will bet that the winner of the next Australian Golf Open has more arms than the human average". Should you bet against him?

Answer: No

Because there are more people with one arm than there are with three, the average number of arms across the human population would be slightly less than 2. I think it would be fair to say that the next winner would be likely to have both arms.
2. If Sydney, Australia's largest city, were transplanted to the USA, where would it rank in the American highest population list?

Answer: 2nd

Sydney passed four million people in 2001, which would put it behind New York City (a bit over eight million), but ahead of Los Angeles' 3.6 million.
3. What is the claim to fame of the island of Inchmurrin?

Answer: It is the largest inland island in Great Britain

Located at the south end of Loch Lomond, the largest lake in Britain, it measures about 2.5 by 1.5 kilometres.
4. What is the smallest unit of fluid measurement in the British Apothecaries' system of measurement?

Answer: minim

An apothecary was the name for a chemist, and this system was mainly used in the field of medicine. There were 20 minims in a fluid scruple, three scruples in a drachm, and 160 drachms in a pint. A pennyweight is a Troy measure, mainly used for measuring precious metals.
5. What type of rock does Ireland's Blarney Stone consist of?

Answer: limestone

Blarney Castle is near Cork, Ireland. Kissing the Stone supposedly gives a person the gift of eloquence.
6. What breed of toy dog descended from the sled dogs of Lappland?

Answer: Pomeranian

Samoyeds and malemutes (or malamutes) share similar origins, but are not classified as 'toy'. The Poms are easily identified by their wide fluffy tail that extends over its back, almost to the head.
7. What imaginary line, running between Bali and Lombok in Indonesia, is recognised by biogeographers as the division between Australian and Asian fauna?

Answer: Wallace's Line

Named for Alfred Wallace who was a contemporary of Charles Darwin; he discovered a distinct difference between birds on either side of the 'line'. The Cunard Line is a shipping company that operated such famous ships as the Lusitania and the Queen Mary.
8. Who was the female star of the 1936 movie "The Garden of Allah"?

Answer: Marlene Dietrich

Also starred Basil Rathbone. A high-society woman takes a trip to the Sahara to get away from it all, and finds forbidden love with a monk. The movie won a special Oscar for cinematography.
9. Which Australian band, fronted by Daryl Braithwaite, changed their name to 'Highway' in an attempt to break into the American market?

Answer: Sherbet

The American experiment did not succeed, but they had success in Australia with hits such as "Howzat", "You've got the Gun", and "High Rolling". Formed in 1969, they disbanded in 1982.
10. What is the more common name for the 'arara'?

Answer: Macaw

An onomatopoeic word from the Brazilian Tupi tribe. Many of the macaw species are in danger of extinction due to human encroachment.
