quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the only number, between 100 and 200, that is the sum of the cubes of its three digits? Hint- A bit of commonsense thinking should eliminate quite a few possibilities.

Answer: 153

By using a bit of logic first, you could eliminate any numbers that contain 6,7,8 and 9, as all these numbers cubed are greater than 200. Obviously, one digit MUST be a '1', and the cube of 5 (125) also has to be in the mix.
2. In 1813, Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson were explorers that were the first to cross the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, Australia. William Wentworth has a few locations named for him, but which one is a town in the mountain range that he crossed?

Answer: Wentworth Falls

Wentworth Falls is named after the waterfalls that abound in the area, and is a very pretty little town.

Wentworthville is a suburb of Sydney, and Wentworth is in the far south-west of New South Wales, about 10 hours drive from the mountains. Williamstown is a suburb of Melbourne, and was actually named after King William IV.
3. If a cricket bowler has a bowling analysis of 16.4-4-37-9, would he be pleased with his performance?

Answer: Yes

These awesome figures were returned by English bowler Jim Laker, England V Australia, in 1956. In the second innings, he went even better, grabbing an amazing 51.2-23-53-10.
Dismissing all 10 batsmen in an innings is a very rare feat indeed, and dismissing 19 of a possible 20 batsmen in a Test gave Laker a world record that may never be matched or surpassed.

For the non-cricketers, these figures can be broken down as-

16.4- number of overs, (an over being a group of 6 or 8 deliveries)
4- maidens. A maiden is an over that no runs have been scored off.
37- total number of runs scored off the bowler.
9- number of wickets taken by the bowler.
4. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the advertisements for 'Sea Monkeys' on the backs of comics. Now, I know that they are not really monkeys, but what are they?

Answer: Brine shrimp

Their scientific name is Artemia salina, and they can grow to about 15mm in length. Sea Monkeys even have their own patent- U.S. 3,673,986. Who would have thought that anyone could patent life!
5. The Victoria Cross is the highest military award for bravery in the face of the enemy in most British Commonwealth countries. What two words are written on the face of this medal?

Answer: For Valour

The crosses are made from melted-down bronze, from Russian cannons seized during the Crimean War (1854-56). Whilst the inscription and design of the decoration are simple, the honour attached is of the highest degree.

Between the Boer War and the Vietnam War, only 96 V.C.s were awarded to Australian troops, with the majority (65) coming from the 'Great War'- World War I.
6. Which of these occupations would be the most likely to use a loupe?

Answer: A jeweller

A loupe is a small magnifying glass, typically with a magnification of 5X to 10X.
7. In 1961, the Coasters released a song titled 'Little Egypt', about an exotic belly dancer. Which two American states are mentioned in the lyrics?

Answer: Texas and Arizona

According to the song, Little Egypt had "...a diamond big as Texas on her toe", and a tattoo of a cowboy on her spine, that said "...Phoenix, Arizona, 1949."

In 1964, Elvis Presley used the same song in his movie, 'Roustabout'.
8. The Bikini Atoll was used by the US military to test nuclear weapons in the late 1940s and 1950s. Which group of islands does Bikini belong to?

Answer: Marshall Islands

Bikini Atoll is now uninhabited because of extreme radiation levels, with the residents being moved to the island of Kili in 1948. An abortive attempt was made to return home in the 1970s, but US government agencies declared that the atoll was not safe.
9. Which of these fish-hook sizes is the largest?

Answer: 19/0

Different manufacturers use different sizes, but the scaling system is the same. In general, a number without the '/0' following it, is smaller than the '/0' types, and the numbers go in the opposite direction- ie, a size 30 is smaller than a 20, and a size 1 is smaller than a 1/0. With the '/0' notation, the higher the number, the larger the hook. A 19/0 is much larger than a 2/0.

Confused? Me, too...
10. Manfred Mann's classic "Blinded by the Light" has some of the most confusing lyrics ever written. One line states "..the calliope crashed to the ground..". What is a calliope?

Answer: A musical instrument

Named after the Greek muse who was the daughter of Zeus, the calliope resembles a large pipe organ. It was powered by steam, and produced sound through ascending sizes of whistles.

The song has been the subject of musings and queries since its release, but no-one is quite sure what it is all about.
