1. A green rooster with a red cock's comb, yellow beak and multicoloured tail has appeared on boxes of Kellogg's Corn Flakes since 1957. What is his name?

Answer: Cornelius

Kellogg's has sold corn flakes since 1906, using a variety of mascots including a woman with a shock of corn in her arms described as "The Sweetheart of the Corn." Cornelius "Corny" Rooster was introduced in 1957. The connection made was that corn flakes are a good way to start the day, after the cock crows. Early ads said "Nothing gets you crowing in the morning like Kellogg's Corn Flakes." Cornelius was created by the Chicago advertising agency Leo Burnett.

Answer: Foghorn J. Leghorn

Leghorn was Senator Claghorn, a regular character on the Fred Allen radio programme of the 1940s. Foghorn often said "That's a joke, son!" because Claghorn said it first.

4. From what country did Panchito Pistoles in the Walt Disney cartoons come?

Answer: Mexico

Panchito Pistoles first appeared as one of "The Three Caballeros" in 1944, alongside Donald Duck and José Carioca. He is a rooster who lives in Mexico City and rides a horse named Señor Martinez. His name refers to the two six-guns which he has handy all the time; "pistola" is a Spanish word meaning gun.

His full name is Panchito Romero Miguel Junipero Francisco Quintero González III. He has since appeared in Sunday comics, comic books, theme park rides, colouring books and cartoons.
5. In an old folk tale, recorded by the Brothers Grimm, much adapted to many media, a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster run away to become musicians in which European city?

Answer: Bremen

The Grimms' version of this story has the foursome, abused by their masters, escape to become musicians in Bremen. They trick and run off a band of robbers and live happily ever after. The story has been retold in two operas (one Russian and one German), several animated movies, stage plays, a Jim Henson Muppets adaptation, a Richard Scarry children's storybook, a Japanese electronic game, and a bronze statue by Gerhard Marcks erected in Bremen, Germany, in 1953.
6. Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) wrote a verse play called "Chantecler" in 1902. It was (broadly) adapted into which live-action-animated movie made in Ireland and America in 1991?

Answer: Rock-A-Doodle

In Rostand's play, Chantecler is a Gallic Rooster (the rooster is a traditional symbol of France) who is convinced that his crow awakens the sun in the morning and causes it to rise. Rostand is perhaps better known for his play "Cyrano de Bergerac." "Rock-A-Doodle" is a children's musical starring the voices of Glen Campbell, Christopher Plummer, Phil Harris, Charles Nelson Reilly, and Sandy Duncan. A novelisation followed the motion picture.
7. In the 1973 Walt Disney adaptation of "Robin Hood," which of the Merry Men was played by a rooster?

Answer: Alan-A-Dale

Country-Western singer Roger Miller voiced the troubadour rooster Alan-A-Dale who is the narrator of the motion picture. In many of the original Robin Hood stories, Alan-A-Dale was a wandering minstrel. Miller wrote and sang the song "Oo-De-Lally" for the film: "Robin Hood and Little John runnin' through the forest, jumpin' fences, dodgin' trees, an' tryin' to get away. Contemplatin' nothin' but escape an' fin'lly makin' it. Oo-de-lally, Oo-de-lally, Golly what a day."
8. Where do the Roosters professional rugby team call home?

Answer: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

The Sydney Roosters is one of the oldest and most successful teams in Australian professional rugby. Their home is "the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney" which is part of Greater Sydney. The club was founded in 1908. The team changed their jersey design to include a cockerel in 1967. General Sir Peter Cosgrove, the 26th Governor-General of Australia (2014 to 2019), has been an enthusiastic fan.
9. In the American television series "Family Guy," who is the galline character with whom Peter Griffin gets into protracted fights near unto death?

Answer: Ernie the Giant Chicken

As revealed in a flashback in an episode of "Family Guy" entitled "Da Boom," the animosity between Peter and Ernie the Giant Chicken goes back to an incident in which the chicken tried to give Peter an expired coupon which led to a fight between them.

The fights between Peter and Ernie are often long and cover a lot of territory, leaving massive destruction of property in their wake. Peter has left Ernie for dead in several episodes but Ernie "wakes up" and survives to fight another day. In the episode "Big Man on Hippocampus," Ernie hits Peter in the head with a shovel, a crowbar, a baseball bat, a frying pan and a golf club. Peter survives this, too.
10. In which fictional universe does the inventor Gyro Gearloose appear?

Answer: Walt Disney

Carl Banks created Gyro Gearloose in 1952 for the Disney picture "Gladstone's Terrible Secret." The anthropomorphic rooster appeared thereafter alongside Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge and the other duck-related characters. He also appeared in a Mickey Mouse scratch-and-sniff book, with Goofy in a television special, and as a regular on "DuckTales." Gyro's inventions, while brilliant, often fail in some particular respect which creates a problem central to the story.
