Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Riverdale High School was first seen in the long-running comic book series and then in the much different television series about whom?

Answer: Archie, Jughead, Veronica

The innocent comic-book series "Archie" was created in 1941 around the adventures of a group of middle-class students at Riverdale High School. The editorial design was to make the characters relatable and normal. The characters and setting were broadly adapted in 2017 to a freaky supernatural television series.

The chief writer, Robert Aguirre-Sacasa, described it as "'Riverdale' is Archie Meets Twin Peaks."
2. Who portrays the father of an about-to-fail college student who enrolls himself in Grand Lakes University to encourage his son to complete his education in "Back to School"?

Answer: Rodney Dangerfield

Rodney Dangerfield starred in this silly American comedy motion picture made in 1986. Co-stars included Sally Kellerman, Ned Beatty, Sam Kinison, and Robert Downey Jr. Kurt Vonnegut appeared as himself, as did the entire rock band Oingo Boingo. The University of Wisconsin-Madison provided the exteriors for the fictional Grand Lakes University.
3. C.S. Lewis' 1945 novel "That Hideous Strength: A Modern Fairy-Tale for Grown-Ups" is set at which fictional English university?

Answer: University of Edgestow

"That Hideous Strength" culminates Lewis' "Space Trilogy." Unlike the first two books, it is set on Earth, mainly at the University of Edgestow. Edgestow comprises four colleges: Bracton College, Northumberland College, Dukes College and St. Elizabeth's College (for women). It may be loosely based on Durham University, 'tho some of its buildings are much older, dating from the 14th century.
4. On the long-running American television series "Saved by the Bell," after Zack, Slater, Kelly and Screech were graduated from Bayside High, where did they go to college?

Answer: California University

The fictional California University was based, in major part, on the University of California at Berkeley. The gang from "Saved by the Bell" (1989-1993) attended there in the sequel "Saved by the Bell: The College Years" (1993-1994). Interestingly, the same fictional university showed up on another parallel 1990s TV show.

The principal characters in "Beverly Hills: 90210" attended California University after being graduated from West Beverly High School.
5. In the Marvel Comics Universe, Peter Parker (Spider-Man) attended which university with the initials ESU?

Answer: Empire State University

Peter Parker attended and was graduated from ESU, located somewhere in New York City, probably in Greenwich Village (and not far from the actual New York University). The school first appears in "Amazing Spider-Man" #31 (December 1965). Victor von Doom studied there until he was expelled. Johnny Storm (the Human Torch) also attended and was also expelled. Emma Frost attended and was not expelled.
6. Which 2009 novel by Erica Bauermeister describes a group of students who gather weekly at Lillian's Restaurant to learn to cook?

Answer: The School of Essential Ingredients

Bauermeister's debut novel follows eight students and their unconventional culinary teacher as each learns a great deal more than how to cook. There is a sequel: "The Lost Art of Mixing" (2013).
7. Which 1994 movie touched issues of Black Power and White Supremacy, rape and lesbianism, violence and passive resistance, police bias and economic justice, all on a college campus?

Answer: Higher Learning

"Higher Learning" is set on the campus of the fictitious Columbia University; the exteriors were shot at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). For his appearance in this film, Laurence Fishburne won an NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture." Her appearance was also Tyra Banks' first in a theatrical motion picture.
8. Which American television series (2007-2011) was set in the fictional fraternities and sororities of the fictional Cyprus-Rhodes University in Ohio?

Answer: GREEK

"Greek" is an American humourous television series which takes place primarily in three Hellenic houses: the fraternities Kappa Tau Gamma and Omega Chi Delta and the sorority Zeta Beta Zeta. Cyprus-Rhodes University is depicted by exterior shots of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) campus in Pasadena, California and University of North Carolina campus at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
9. The TV comedy series "Boy Meets World" starts in middle school, spends four years in high school, and concludes with two years at which university?

Answer: Pennbrook University

Characters Eric and Jack begin attending Pennbrook in Season 5; Cory, Shawn, Topanga, Angela and Rachel begin attending in Season 6. George Feeny was the kids' middle school teacher, high school teacher and then history professor at Pennbrook. The fictional college is located in Philadelphia and is based on both Saint Joseph's University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Their mascot is the Penguins. There is a real Pennbrook Middle School in Pennsylvania.
10. In the 1978 musical motion picture "Grease," Danny Zuko (John Travolta) romanced Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John). Where was the film set?

Answer: Rydell High

The fictional Rydell High was originally based on Radnor High School in Radnor, Pennsylvania. The exteriors were shot at Venice High School in Venice, California; the interiors at Huntington Park High School. The movie was nominated for just one Oscar -- Best Original Song for "Hopelessly Devoted to You" -- and lost.
