Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Gabriel "Gabe" Kaplan played a school teacher who returns to James Buchanan High School to teach a class of ne'er-do-wells of which he was a part when he was a student there. Name that show.

Answer: Welcome Back Kotter

Kaplan based the programme about the Sweathogs of Room 11 on his own experiences at New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn. The show, which ran from 1975 to 1979, launched the career of John Travolta (who played Vinnie Barbarino). It also launched the very annoying expression "Up your nose with a rubber hose."
2. Eve Arden played a high-school English teacher at Madison High School on radio, television and film. What was her character's name?

Answer: Connie Brooks

"Our Miss Brooks" was broadcast on CBS radio from 1948 to 1957, on television from 1952 to 1956 and as a theatrical-release motion picture in 1956. Eve Arden played the lead against Principal Osgood Conklin (Gale Gordon), student Walter Denton (Richard Crenna), and the object of Miss Brooks' romantic intentions Philip Boynton (Jeff Chandler).
3. In the 1986 teen comedy film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," who played Bueller's economics teacher?

Answer: Ben Stein

Ben Stein was no actor when cast as the economics teacher in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986). His dry, flat, nasal monotone was just right to play a boring teacher. The humour inherent in Stein taking roll and calling out "Bueller ... Bueller ... Bueller?" was unexpected, probably even by Stein.
4. Who was the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who most influenced Harry Potter and who was buried at the school?

Answer: Albus Dumbledore

Professor Dumbledore was himself a half-blood who supported Muggles. His father died in Azkaban. He had fatherly feelings toward Harry Potter. Harry's second son was named Albus Severus Potter after him.
5. Who played Professor John Keating in the 1989 American dramatic film "Dead Poets Society"?

Answer: Robin Williams

John Keating joins the faculty at the elite Welton Academy as English instructor. Himself a graduate of the school, he inspires his students to revive the Dead Poets Society, of which he was a part as a student. This American film won the BAFTA Award for Best Film in 1989.

The Latin aphorism "Carpe diem" was made popular by Professor Keating's use of it to inspire his students to "seize the day." The Roman poet Horace uses it in his Odes to mean "enjoy the present moment."
6. Who was a teacher at South Park Elementary School who had a sex-change operation from male to female, then had reversal surgery, and who then became President of the United States?

Answer: Mr. Garrison

On TV's "South Park", Herbert Garrison became Janet Garrison and then went back, before being elected President of the United States. He/she is/was voiced by Trey Parker. A remarkably complex character, he uses a racist hand puppet named Mister Hat and, at one point, taught his students how to tell the difference between a real prostitute and an undercover police officer.
7. English novelist James Hilton ("Lost Horizon" 1933) wrote a sentimental story about a schoolteacher and his devoted students which was made into two theatrical movies and two television series. What was this 1934 novella?

Answer: Goodbye, Mr. Chips

"Goodbye, Mr. Chips" was twice published in magazines (British Weekly; The Atlantic) before being printed as a highly-successful book. It is the story of Mr. Chipping, a teacher at a fictional boys' boarding school, the Brookfield School, where he is beloved by students and staff. BBC adapted it for radio broadcast in 1936.

It was produced as a three-act stage play in 1938. The first theatrical film was released in 1939. A second radio play starring Laurence Olivier was broadcast in 1939. The 1969 musical version of the motion picture starred Peter O'Toole.

A theatrical version of the musical was staged in 1982. The first BBC television series was produced in 1984 and the second in 2002, which showed on American TV on PBS' Masterpiece Theatre.
8. In Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 novel "Anne of Green Gables," who is the new teacher who becomes Anne's friend and mentor?

Answer: Miss Muriel Stacy

Anne Shirley is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert in Avonlea on Prince Edward Island in Canada. They expected to adopt a boy. Anne's adventures in school are detailed, in particular her relationship with Miss Stacy, a progressive teacher who develops a relationship with Anne which encourages her to grow intellectually. Anne says of her teacher "I love Miss Stacy with my whole heart, Marilla."
9. William Katt played special-ed high-school teacher Ralph Hinkley (Hanley for part of one season) opposite Robert Culp as FBI agent Bill Maxwell in which 1981-1983 ABC dramedy?

Answer: The Greatest American Hero

Aliens give substitute teacher Ralph Hinkley a suit which confers superpowers on him (the ability to fly, telekinesis, X-ray vision, super strength, and invisibility, among others). Unfortunately, he loses the instruction manual and must learn the suit's powers through experience.

He is assisted by an FBI Special Agent and his divorce attorney, Pam Davidson, played by Connie Sellecca. When John Hinckley Jr. attempted to kill Ronald Regan on 30 March 1981, the producers of the show changed Ralph's last name to Hanley, but changed it back at the beginning of the next season.
10. Pat Morita played a karate master who teaches Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Julie Pierce (Hilary Swank) in "The Karate Kid" franchise. What is the sensei's name?

Answer: Mister Miyagi

Danny Russo is the object of Mr. Miyagi's tutelage in the first three "Karate Kid" movies -- "Karate Kid" (1984), "The Karate Kid, Part II: (1986), and "The Karate Kid, Part III" (1989); Julie Pierce is the teenager who takes his place in "The Next Karate Kid" (1994). Japanese-American actor Pat Morita was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in 1985 for the first motion picture.
