Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these refers to a psychological condition?

Answer: Stockholm Syndrome

Stockholm Syndrome, as many would know, refers to the psychological condition wherein one begins to feel a connection with someone who has control over one (usually a hostage/captor situation). The syndrome was named after an event (specifically a bank robbery) which took place in Stockholm, Sweden.

The adverse syndrome, in which a captor feels sympathy for their hostage, is referred to as Lima Syndrome-- yes, that's Lima, Peru.
2. What American TV show featured an episode in which a murder was solved in Grand Central Station?

Answer: CSI: New York

"CSI: NY" was the third to show up in the CBS "Crime Scene Investigation" line-up (following Las Vegas and Miami and preceding the short-lived "CSI: Cyber") and it starred Gary Sinise as Mac Taylor. The second episode of the second season, "Grand Murder at Central Station", certainly did involve a Grand Central Station murder (and a pretty frightening one involving acid thrown at a man's face, but considering the possibilities, the show featured a number of interesting, out-of-the-box murders and crimes all around the boroughs of New York City.

The show lasted nine seasons before cancellation.
3. What computer programming language, named after a popular Indonesian export, became popular for web-based applications?

Answer: Java

Shortly after being introduced for programming use, Java changed its logo from a triangular mascot named Duke into the popular, stylized coffee cup and it has since been used by numerous applications and browsers the world wide web over. Created in 1995, Java is similar to the similarly popular C++ coding language.

A number of different games on FunTrivia, at least in the past, have used Java applets. Java also happens to be an Indonesian island and a slang word for coffee.
4. Although he neither lived nor died there, which artist sang about West Virginia in his signature song?

Answer: John Denver

Many consider "Take Me Home, Country Roads" to be Denver's signature song though he also had hits with "Rocky Mountain High" and "Annie's Song". Denver lived to be 53 before dying too young, crashing his plane in 1997. Denver's birth name was Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., but under the stage name of John Denver he created what many consider to be some of the most popular traditional songs of Americana. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" became the state song for West Virginia while "Rocky Mountain High" became the state song for Colorado.
5. Which of these drag queens was inducted into RuPaul's 'Drag Hall of Fame' for winning "RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars 2"?

Answer: Alaska

Alaska (Justin Honard) came into the competition in "RuPaul's Drag Race's" fifth season following his boyfriend's victory in season four (he and Sharon Needles were dating at the time). While their relationship didn't work out in the long run, Alaska became a drag star in her own right, becoming runner-up in season five and returning for the second all-stars season, dominating the competition and winning the grand prize. Alaska is known for her dry and often offensive humour.

Her full drag name, which I can't post here on FunTrivia, is meant to reflect a sexual act. On the show, she's simply 'Alaska'.
6. Which of these drinks is another name for 'rum and coke'?

Answer: Cuba libre

While a pretty basic drink, this cocktail, commonly sold in bars as a rum-and-coke (why make it fancier than it is?) is also offered up, usually in a highball, as a Cuba libre. In English, Cuba libre would translate to 'Free Cuba'. Interestingly, the drink has some interesting ties to Cuba where, for many years, Coca-Cola was never sold due to strict U.S. embargo. Because of this, a simple Cuban rum/Cuban cola combo was a cheap, local way to have the drink. Topping it off with a lime wedge is all the better, of course.
7. Which of these sporting events is typically completed in off-road vehicles?

Answer: The Dakar Rally

The Dakar Rally, originally held in Senegal and Western Africa but pushed to South America in 2009 (you know, where there is no Dakar), is an off-road race that takes its participants through rough terrain across thousands and thousands of miles. The original races used to start in Paris and then wind their way down to Dakar by some means, but in the 2010s the race headed to Peru, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina.
8. Which of these condiments gets its distinct flavour from unripe grapes or grape vinegar?

Answer: Dijon mustard

Dijon mustard is named after the town of Dijon in Eastern France. Known for its beautiful architecture, the town centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

But back to the mustard. Dijon, like regular mustard, is made with mustard seeds. But while normal mustard is made with vinegar, dijon mustard is made with either wine vinegar or verjuice, which is made from the juices of crushed, unripe grapes, something there's plenty of in France. And yes, the first dijon mustard was made by someone in the Burgundy region, hailing from Dijon.
9. What dance, popularized in the 1920s, is done by mimicking walking in place?

Answer: The Charleston

A technique used in swing dancing and the upbeat stylings of the lindy hop, the Charleston is a dance known for its high-tempo steps, usually done to emulate walking in a forward and backward motion. The movement can be done by a solo dancer or in pairs wherein partners can performed in open or closed positions (as in parallel positions or face-to-face).

The dance was invented in the early-to-mid-1920s and was most popular then, but it has consistently reemerged in dance trends and pop culture ever since.
10. What movie based on a novel by Michael Crichton featured gorillas, lasers, diamonds, and Bruce Campbell?

Answer: Congo

Released in 1995 to poor reviews, "Congo" was an interesting film starring Laura Linney and Tim Curry among others. While Michael Crichton's previous adaptation, "Jurassic Park", was making big bucks at the box office, "Congo" fared a bit worse despite strong direction from Frank Marshall.

The movie involved a super-smart race of gorillas, some automatic weaponry, a volcanic eruption, lasers, and a hot air balloon escape. It was nominated for seven Razzie Awards.
