Who-Ville Trivia Quiz

This is NOT a Geography quiz!

There are many "villes" around the world, honoring famous personalities. But, in this quiz, I wanted to take a different approach - I'll be bringing up some other uses of the "villes" in popular culture, not necessarily in a geographic way.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When thinking of a "ville", the first thing that comes to mind are cities. There are many "ville" cities in the world, but only two of them are national capitals. In which continent can you find both of them?

Answer: Africa

Libreville is the capital city of Gabon. Its name can be roughly translated to "Free Town", as it actually comprises two languages ("Libre" is Spanish for "Free", and "Ville" is French for "Town"). It is located at the northwest of the country, on the Atlantic Coast.

Its neighbor, the Congo Republic, has Brazzaville as its capital. The name of the city honors its founder, Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. It is located on the shore of the Congo River, and directly opposite from Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the river being the boundary between both countries.
2. Muhammad Ali, "The Greatest", was also known by another nickname that included the name of his birthplace. Where was he born?

Answer: Louisville, KY

Louisville is the largest and most populated city in Kentucky. As well as being the venue for the annual Kentucky Derby, and home to the headquarters of Kentucky Fried Chicken, among other landmarks, it also houses a cultural center and an international airport named after Ali, one of the most notable sportsmen born in the city.

Before being called "The Greatest", Ali was known as "The Louisville Lip", due to his frequent trash-talking towards his rivals.

Coincidentally, there were three more heavyweight boxing champions who were also born in Louisville: Marvin Hart, Jimmy Ellis and Greg Page.
3. A 1977 book by Jay Anson narrates the story of a family moving into a haunted house. The book spawned several sequels and movies, despite being marked as partly made up. Where does this "horror" take place?

Answer: Amityville

"The Amityville Horror" is based on the real story of the Lutz family, who moved into the house where Ronald DeFeo Jr. had killed several members of his family in 1974. After almost a month of residing there, the Lutzes abandoned the house, after being victims of many paranormal phenomena.

However, disputes arose over the accuracy of many of the events told in the book, and are still discussed up to this day.
4. There are various cases of feuding cities, not only limited to the real world. The Simpsons (and all of Springfield's residents, for that matter) are frequently at odds with this neighboring town. Can you name it?

Answer: Shelbyville

A recurrent theme throughout the series, the rivalry between Springfield and Shelbyville dates back to their respective foundations.

Both Jebediah Springfield and Shelbyville Manhattan were part of a single group seeking to found a city on that place. The group split up after a disagreement over Shelbyville's idea that everyone should be able to marry their cousins, and led to the founding of both cities.

The other options are also names of towns in the show, but they aren't as relevant for the series as Shelbyville.
5. They might be "Big in Japan", but they are actually German. They want to be "Forever Young", yet they've been active since 1982. Which "ville" band am I talking about?

Answer: Alphaville

Formed in Munster in 1982, their big break came with their 1984 debut album, which included the aforementioned songs (their most famous hits), as well as the slightly less successful "Sounds Like A Melody".

The album was called "Forever Young", which was also the original name of the band. They changed their name to Alphaville after a 1965 French sci-fi film.

They are still active to date, with singer Marian Gold being the sole founding member remaining within the band. On September 2022, they released "Eternally Yours", containing symphonic versions of their songs.
6. The name Bruce Anthony Johannesson might not sound familiar, but he's actually a well known personality in the music industry, being the lead guitarist of a famous glam rock band. Which band has this "Ville" guitarist as one of its members?

Answer: Poison

Johannesson took the name of his favorite car, the Cadillac Coupe DeVille, shortened to C.C. DeVille, as his stage name.

He joined Poison after the departure of their original guitarist, Matt Smith, in 1985. Initially, he didn't get along with the rest of the band, with the most notable clash being his refusal to play the songs they gave him for the audition. He started jamming with his own guitar riff, that eventually made its way into one of their early hits, "Talk Dirty To Me". His talent ultimately won him the spot, and he continues in their lineup in the present.
7. All of the cases we've seen so far have "ville" as an ending or a suffix. But Ville is also a given name in Finland. Is it male or female?

Answer: Male

Ville is believed to have originated as a variant of Vilho, which is Finnish for William.
It became a popular name in the second half of the 20th century. Its name day is celebrated on April 6th.
8. What is the correct spelling of the theatrical show that included light comedy, mixed with several other acts such as dancing, juggling, acrobatics, and which was the most popular form of entertainment in North America at the end of the 19th century?

Answer: Vaudeville

The term "Vaudeville" comes from French, although there is some obscurity regarding its origins. One of the most widely accepted sources explains the word as a derivation of "Voix de ville", meaning "Voice of the city", since the early form of these shows, back in the 17th century, involved comedic performances with the addition of melodies from popular songs of the time.

American Vaudeville, however, was a lot different from the French version. As stated in the question text, the comedic performance was part of a much bigger mix of other variety acts.

Vaudeville declined in the first decades of the 20th century, as the cinemas became the most popular attraction. Several of the earlier movie stars actually had their origins in Vaudeville shows.
9. Back in 2009, when Facebook's popularity skyrocketed, so did the Flash-based mini games hosted in the page. One of the earliest examples of this phenomenon became the most popular game on the site for the next two years. What was this game called, which involved most aspects of running and managing a farm?

Answer: Farmville

"Farmville" was released in 2009 by Zynga, one of the main app developers for Facebook back in that year. It quickly became the most popular game on the site, reaching 34,5 million daily active users at its peak. The game was criticized, however, due to its addictive nature.

From 2011 onwards, the number of active users went on a steady decline, and the game was discontinued at the end of 2020, as support for Flash Player was terminated on December 21st. There are two sequels, released in 2012 and 2021, the latter only based on mobile devices.

"Farmville" was also one of the first "freemium" games, meaning that, while most of the game could be played freely, some features and boosters where only available via purchases based on real-world currency.
10. For the final question, how about some music? Being the last question, and looking for anything "ville"-related, it seems fitting to join The Monkees on their "Last Train To..." where?

Answer: Clarksville

"Last Train To Clarksville" was the first single released by The Monkees in 1966, and was included on their self-titled album of the same year. It is one of the band's most famous songs, and was featured on their TV series more times than any other of their tracks.
