Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shiloh is a "unisex" name.

Answer: True

It is used for both boys and girls. Although the name is probably masculine based on its etymology (one proposed translation is "he who is to be sent"), it is more often used as a girl's name than a boy's name.
2. According to Jewish Scripture, Shiloh was the place where God's tabernacle first came to rest.

Answer: True

Shiloh was the location of God's tabernacle after the conquest of Canaan. It housed the Ark of the Covenant prior to the building of the temple. Joshua 18:1-2: "And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land was subdued before them."
3. The battle of Shiloh was one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War. Where was it fought?

Answer: Tennessee

The battle began April 7, 1862. Confederate General Johnston was slain on the first day of battle. Confederate General Beauregard retreated from Union General Grant's forces. Over twenty-three thousand were killed or wounded.
4. Which animal named Shiloh is the subject of a popular children's book?

Answer: A dog

These books by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and Barry Moser include such titles as "Shiloh Season" and "Saving Shiloh." Alas, I picked the name before I realized it was a popular fictional dog...
5. Shiloh comes from which language?

Answer: Hebrew

The meaning is unclear, although several translations have been suggested: "sent one", "the seed", "peaceful one", and "tranquil", to name but a few.
6. Shiloh is sometimes seen by Christians as a name for what?

Answer: The Messiah

Genesis 49:10 says, "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be." Many Christians interpret this as a reference to the coming of Christ, the Messiah.
7. Which singer has a song with the refrain, "When no one else would come, Shiloh you always came"?

Answer: Neil Diamond

This song, a mid-career hit for Diamond, can be heard on the collection, "The Essential Neil Diamond."
8. Shiloh was the 25th most popular name for girls for 2002.

Answer: False

Shiloh didn't even make the list of the top 1,000. However, Elizabeth came in at number 11. This is according to baby-names-world.com.
9. The Biblical Shiloh was located ten miles north of which city?

Answer: Bethel

Shiloh was a city of Ephraim; today it is Seilun, which comes from the Arabic for "a mass of shapeless ruins," according to http://christiananswers.net/dictionary/shiloh.html.
10. What dancehall and reggae musician's most influential album was titled "'Til Shiloh"?

Answer: Buju Banton

Banton (whose birth name is Mark Myrie) is one of the most popular singers in Jamaica. "'Til Shiloh" was released in 1995, and the title track, "Shiloh," runs a mere 20 seconds.
