Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Last Thursday night I wandered out into my front yard and I howled at the moon. (I would have howled at the moon Wednesday, but that is my bowling night). I got to thinking that mankind probably has millions of questions about the moon. (I for one have often wondered if it came in other colors . . .sorry, it is just a phase I am going through). For example, why do coyotes howl at the moon? And not just coyotes, but wolves, hyenas and insurance salesman. So without further adieu, I begin my quiz on the moon. Which of the following is TRUE of the moon?

Answer: It is a natural satellite

Wow, I had thought that it was always directly above Arlington was the correct answer. I can see that this is a very delicate subject and I am no expert. Some of this information is so confusing, we need a rocket scientist to understand it. Fortunately, Dr. I. M. Looney from the Los Alamos plant in New Mexico is around and can help clear up some of the confusion. Dr. Looney. Thank you, Professorjon. Well I believe that everyone can understand that the moon is a satelitte.
2. In the James Bond thriller, "Moonraker" what is the name of the indestructible metal mouthed villain?

Answer: Jaws

Well Professorjon, all of the answers refer to Bond villains. Oddjob was in "Goldfinger", Tee Hee was in 'Live and Let Die' and Red Grant was in "From Russia With Love". However, Jaws, played by Richard Kiel, is the villain in "Moonraker" and also the 1977 film "The Spy who Loved Me".

In "Moonraker" James Bond is assigned to investigate a missing shuttle and his investigation leads him to a plot by Drax (played by Michael Lonsdale) to take over the world and repopulate it with a race he has bred on a space station.
3. In which of the following popular card games do players "Shoot the Moon?"

Answer: Hearts

That sounds pretty complicated and once again I would like to call on our rocket scientist from the researcher center in New Mexico. Can you explain that Dr. Looney? "Ah yes, Professorjon, I believe I can be of help to you there. I have my notes right here. Oh, my notes are not in that pocket.

Not in that pocket either. I seemed to have misplaced my notes. However, in the game of Hearts, the idea is to not take tricks and to keep a low score, as low score wins the game. However, one can "Shoot the Moon", that is take all of the tricks, (the queen of spades and the 13 hearts) and thus send their opponent up twenty six points, or they can choose to go down twenty six points."
4. In the 1973 movie "Paper Moon" who won an Oscar for her role as Addie Loggins?

Answer: Tatum O'Neal

Oh yes, Professorjon. Set during the depression, "Paper Moon" stars Ryan O'Neal and his daughter Tatum (in her Oscar winning role).
5. What is the name of the Moon Men in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle"?

Answer: Cloyd and Gidney

The 1961 show was produced by Jay Ward. Boris and Natasha were Rocky and Bullwinkle's arch enemies. Paul Frees (Boris) and Bill Scott (Bullwinkle) provided voices as did June Foray (Rocky). And get this Professorjon, I read in the Internet Movie Data Base that the cartoon character of Mr. Peabody was based on actor Clifton Webb, who starred in "Laura" and "Mr. Belvedere".
6. The cartoon characters from the moon in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" also included metal munching what?

Answer: mice

Ah yes, this is very interesting Professorjon. In one very sinister plot, the villain, Boris Badenov, controlled a bunch of metal munching mechanical mice who were biting the TV antennae off of everybody's house. Without television, Boris figured, everyone would want to leave the USA, leaving it free for him to loot. Very clever plot, huh, Professorjon?
7. Henry Mancini had a hit song with "Moon River", but who actually sings the Oscar winning song in the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's"?

Answer: Audrey Hepburn

Oh yes, I believe I have seen that movie, Professorjon. Either that or "The Guns of Navarone", I sometimes get the two mixed up. Audrey Hepburn stars in the 1961 movie, "Breakfast at Tiffany's", as the charming, but mysterious, Holly Golightly. George Peppard plays Paul, who falls for Holly, but there are many things about her he can't understand.

The answers are provided by a visit from Doc (played by Buddy Ebsen).
8. Jackie Gleason starred in "The Honeymooners", the classic series in which he always threatened his wife that "One day, bang, zoom, to the moon". But do you know what lodge they belonged to?

Answer: Raccoon

Oh yes. I believe, Professorjon, that Ralph Kramden (Gleason) and Ed Norton (Art Carney) both belonged to the Raccoon Lodge. "The Honeymooners" is a classic 1955 series about a bus driver and his wife (the Kramdens) and their best friends and neighbors, the Nortons (a sewer worker and his wife). Several of the plots had to do with get rich quick schemes that always failed miserably.
9. Who plays Stanley Moon in the British film "Bedazzled"?

Answer: Dudley Moore

Oh, yes, I can understand some confusion around this question Professorjon. This film has been made twice. The second version, made in 2000, starred Brendan Fraser as Elliot Richards and Elizabeth Hurley as the Devil. In the 1967 British version, directed by Stanley Donen, Peter Cook stars as the Devil and Raquel Welch appears as Lust. Dudley Moore plays Stanley, who sells his soul to the Devil for seven wishes.
10. Who wrote the Science Fiction novel "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"?

Answer: Robert Heinlein

Published in 1966 by Heinlein (1907-1988). Heinlein also wrote "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Starship Troopers".
11. Who wrote the first modern mystery, "The Moonstone"?

Answer: Wilkie Collins

Ah yes Professorjon, "The Moonstone" was published by Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) in 1868 and it concerns the theft of a huge yellow diamond.
12. Who was the sixth man to walk on the moon?

Answer: Edgar Mitchell

Well you see Professorjon, Mitchell was a member of Apollo 14, which included Commander Alan Shepard and Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa. Mitchell was the Lunar Module Pilot. They were launched into space on January 31, 1971 and Shepard and Mitchell landed on the moon on February 5, 1971. The landing site was Fra Mauro.
13. The movie "Man on the Moon" was a biography of which of the following people?

Answer: Andy Kaufman

Actor Jim Carrey portrays the doomed comic Andy Kaufman in the 1999 film directed by Milos Forman. The film takes a look at the life of the eccentric Kaufman, best known for his role on "Taxi" as Latka Gravas, and later for his wrestling of women.
14. Which of the following groups had a hit song "Bad Moon Rising"?

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

You made up The Moonbeams, didn't you Professorjon? The sixties group, Creedence Clearwater Revival consisted of John and Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook, and Doug Clifford. They had several hits including "Proud Mary" and "Green River". They may be the best known band never to have had a number one hit.
15. In which of the following movies does Kirk Douglas, while starring with Burt Lancaster, moon a police officer?

Answer: Tough Guys

Well Professorjon, Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas did star in all of those movies and they both appeared in "The List of Adrian Messenger". However, in their last appearance together in the 1986 film "Tough Guys", they appear as two elderly train robbers who are released from prison and must learn to adapt to a different world. Douglas expresses his view point to the situation when he moons Officer Deke Yablonski. (played by Charles Durning). Well, Professorjon, the quiz is complete and although all of the questions dealt with the moon, I failed to determine the common bond. Thank you, Dr. Looney, but this was not a Common Bond quiz. Well folks, I would like to thank Dr. I.M. Looney for donating his valuable time away from his nuclear safe-keeping duties, and I want to remind you that if you have something that you need a rocket scientist for, all you have to do is ask.
