The New Deal was brought into effect by Franklin Roosevelt to help the U.S. during the depression of the early 1930s. The Fair Deal was the name given to the domestic programs of President Harry S. Truman. First used in 1949, the term generally refers to Truman's entire presidency (1945-53).

Included among the Fair Deal programs were a full employment law, a national health insurance plan, extended social security, aid to education, civil rights legislation, public housing, universal military training, an increase in the minimum wage, and a fair employment practices committee.
