Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Your sister got a hearing-ear dog. What color collar and leash will it most likely have?

Answer: orange

Hearing ear dogs help people who are deaf. They might come over and paw at you for instance if the fire alarm goes off. Or if you are are asleep and the fire alarm goes off they could wake you up.
2. Brain Teasers: As an American, what language does your sister most likely communicate with? To find out, figure out this fractured form: Aim Air I Cane Sine Lang Goo Wedge

Answer: American Sign Language

American Sign Language or ASL is the 4th most commonly used language in America. It was influenced by French sign language which can be seen in some signs. For example, "to look for" in French is "chercher" and the sign for "to look for" is made with a C hand not an L hand. In ASL, you don't always sign every word but rather the important words. Instead of saying "I'm happy with you" you would sign "I Happy You".

It is important to note not all deaf people use ASL. Some are oral, and some use both methods together which is known as total communication. There is a debate in the Deaf community about whether or not the Deaf should speak or not.
3. Celebrities: This actress is deaf and a role model to your sister and many other people. She won the Oscar in 1987 for her role as Sarah in "Children of a Lesser God". Who is she?

Answer: Marlee Matlin

Matlin was born August 24, 1965. At the time of her winning she was the youngest person to ever win the Oscar for Best Actress at age 21. In 1993, she married Kevin Grandalski. In 2011, she became a series regular guest star on the TV show "Switched at Birth" as Melody the school counselor at Carlton, the school for the deaf (originally--now hearing people go there as well).

The show is about two girls who were switched at birth when they were born. One of the girls, Daphne is deaf.
4. For Children: Your sister is different than you; should you talk to her?

Answer: Yes, and it would help if you could learn ASL too

Yes, of course you should speak to your sister. It would help her a lot if you could learn ASL. She may be able to lip read, but only a small percent of what is said can be read. Also, some people's lips are hard to read, such as people with a mustache.
5. Geography: What place in American history at one point had so many deaf people living there that everyone, both hearing and deaf, learned sign language?

Answer: Martha's Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard is located in Massachusetts. For almost two centuries it was very common to have deaf people on the island. As many as 1 out of 155 people born were deaf. They even had their own sign language: Martha's Vineyard Sign Language or MVSL.
6. History: What happened in 1988 that made the Deaf happy, including your sister?

Answer: First deaf president at Gallaudet

Gallaudet University is the world's only liberal arts college for the deaf. When it opened in 1864, they had a hearing president despite it being a university for the deaf. This continued until the students protested in 1988. The first deaf president was I. King Jordan. He was president of the college from 1988-2006 when he retired.
7. Humanities: Who wrote your sister's favorite play, "Children of a Lesser God"?

Answer: Mark Medoff

"Children of a Lesser God" is about a man who teaches deaf children, at a deaf school to speak orally. Sarah is not a student anymore but works as a janitor for the school. The man wants to teach Sarah to speak orally, but she does not want to learn. They end up falling in love.

Then they have a big fight and she speaks for the first time yelling that she sounds like a freak. She returns to her mothers house. He comes looking for her, finds her working but does not let her see him. Sarah ends up returning to the school where they end up getting back together.
8. Music: Can your sister enjoy music since she is deaf?

Answer: yes

Deaf people do enjoy music. They do not hear it but they feel the vibrations. Deaf people tend to play their music very loud to make the vibrations easier to feel. Many deaf people are also good dancers because they really feel the music.
9. World: Your sister wants cochlear implants to help her hear. Why is this such a big debate in the Deaf community?

Answer: People in the Deaf community are proud of their deafness and believe cochlear implants imply that it's bad to be deaf.

A cochlear implant is partially placed inside the skin of the ear and partially outside of the ear. It acts as a small microphone that allows the person wearing it to hear.
10. Video Games: Can your Deaf sister play video games?

Answer: yes

Most video games don't require that you hear the sound (since it's mostly music) to play the game. Most that have talking involved are also written out so deaf people can read what is being said.
