Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are water droplets that fall from the sky?

Answer: Rain

Rain is visible water droplets that fall from the sky. The fresh water in rain is a very important part of the water cycle. The word "rain" is both a noun (the actual raindrops), and a verb (to describe the act of raining, as in "it will rain tomorrow"). The word stems from the Old English noun "regan" and the Germanic verb "regnian".
2. Who is the great Brazilian soccer player who officially retired in 2014?

Answer: Rivaldo

Rivaldo Vítor Borba Ferreira, or Rivaldo as he was more commonly known, was born in Brazil in 1972. He started his career in 1989 when he was only 16 years old. He played with two teams during what is described as his "youth career", then went on to play with fifteen professional teams until he retired in 2014. Over the course of his professional career, he had a total of 813 appearances, with 317 goals scored.
3. What is the capital of Italy?

Answer: Rome

Rome (or Roma in Italian) is the capital, and largest city in Italy. It surrounds Vatican City, which is the smallest country in the world. Despite a long-held belief that the city was named after Romulus, the founding father, some historians and etymologists have proposed a few different theories. Rome sits on the Tiber River.

The archaic name of the river is Rumon or Rumen. These words stem from Greek and Latin words meaning "to flow, stream" (Greek - rhéō) and "to hurry, rush" (Latin - ruō).

Others believe that Rome is named after the Etruscan word "ruma", which means "teat". This may be a reference to the wolf that suckled the twins Romulus and Remus. Still others theorize that the name could come from the Greek rhṓmē, which means "strength".
4. What is the proper spelling of this R-word animal?

Answer: Rhinoceros

Various species of the rhinoceros, also known as the rhino, are native to Africa and southern Asia. Rhinoceroses are giant herbivores. All species weigh at least one metric ton when they reach adulthood. The animals are endangered in most of their traditional ranges due to the black market trade on their horns. Poachers kill the animals and cut off their horns, which are then sold in some areas such as China and Vietnam as part of the cultures' traditional medicine.
5. Of the following, which river is the only one located in North America?

Answer: Ramapo River

The Ramapo River is a tributary of the Pompton River and it is found in New York and New Jersey in the United States. The Ravi River forms part of the boundary between India and Pakistan, and empties into the Indian Ocean. The Rokel River is the largest river in the Republic of Sierra Leone in Africa. The Rahue River is found in Chile where it flows through the city of Osorno.
6. China and India were the two largest producers of which food item in 2018-19?

Answer: Rice

In 2018-19, China and India were the world's largest producers of rice. China produced 148 million metric tons of rice during that time, while India produced more than 116 million metric tons. The people in both of those countries consider rice a staple in their diets.

The rice is also exported around the world to countries that do not grow the crop. Other countries that produced a lot of rice in 2018-19 include Indonesia (36.70 million metric tons), Bangladesh (34.91 million tons), and Vietnam (27.77 million metric tons).
7. Which US president survived an assassination attempt in Washington, DC?

Answer: Ronald Reagan

On March 30, 1981 at 2:27 p.m. (Eastern Time), Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley, Jr. in Washington, DC. Hinckley was obsessed with actress Jodie Foster. He had stalked her for years, but she resisted his attempts to get to know her. He apparently believed that if he killed the president, he would get her attention. Reagan survived the attack, and was released from the hospital on April 11, 1981. Hinckley was found not guilty due to insanity.

He was sent to a psychiatric facility where he remained until he was released in September, 2016.
8. What is "racketlon"?

Answer: A sport

Racketlon is a sport that combines a number of racket sports - table tennis, badminton, tennis, and squash. Players either compete individually or in pairs. Points in each event are added up to determine the winner. Racketlon originated in Scandinavia, but is now popular in other areas like Canada and Europe where the International Racketlon Association hosts World Tour competitions.
9. Which "R" Alfred Hitchcock movie was released in 1948?

Answer: Rope

"Rope" is the only Hitchcock film that was released in 1948. The movie starred James Stewart, John Dall and Farley Granger, and was based on Patrick Hamilton's 1929 play. There is some debate about Hitchcock's cameo in this movie. About fifty-five minutes into the movie, two of the characters face one another for some dialogue in front of a window.

In the distance, a red neon sign flashes that show's Hitchcock's trademark silhouette. That cameo is not debated. However, some feel that he is also spotted walking down a busy street just after the opening credits.

It has been said that the individual resembles Hitchcock, but there is no definitive proof that it was actually him. Of the other Hitchcock options given, "Rich and Strange" was released in 1931, "Rebecca" was released in 1940, and "Rear Window" was released in 1954.
10. What is a North American synonym for "curriculum vitae"?

Answer: Résumé

A curriculum vitae (CV) is a summary of academic skills and career accomplishments. The term is used interchangeably with "résumé" in North America where both mean a brief summary of academic and career qualifications. The brief CV is usually no more than four pages.

A more extensive CV is used in academia. The extensive CV can be many pages long, and lists educational qualifications, career experience, publications, conference presentations, etc.
