Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the famous Dark Knight of television, screen, and originally comic books, who strikes fear in the hearts of the criminals of Gotham?

Answer: Batman

Batman first appeared in DC Comics. Different generations probably have different favorites, but, campy TV character aside, he was always a brooding dark character with a heightened sense of justice and a psyche that could keep a team busy analyzing you for years. ("Let's see - you say you watched your parents get gunned down in cold blood and then was raised by the butler? Hmmmmm").
2. In which Monty Python movie does a Black Knight appear?

Answer: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

The battle with the Black Knight has always been one of the funniest scenes in an extremely funny movie. Having already defeated the Green Knight, the Black Knight now moves to defend the "bridge" from King Arthur. As with much of Monty Python, the humor is way over the top - but it's hilarious! "Come back....I'll bite your legs off!!!"
3. Black knights first appeared in Arthurian legends and were usually the evil contrasts to the "good" Knights, or Knight-errants. Who was the famous Knight-errant written about by Cervantes?

Answer: Don Quixote

Famous for tilting at windmills and worshiping a barmaid (or worse) as a lady to be adored, Don Quixote de la Mancha was the protagonist of the famous novel written by Miguel de Cervantes in the early 1600s. Whether you believe that this elderly man is just crazy or truly driven to make the world a better place, the story is a classic and the musical based on it is inspiring. Dream that impossible dream!
4. Which United States Military Academy sports teams have had the nickname "The Black Knights" since 1999?

Answer: Army

The Army Black Knights is the nickname of all the sports teams of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. The mascot is the mule. The nickname for some of the teams used to be the Cadets, but it was standardized to the Army Black Knights in 1999 for all of the Academy sports teams.
5. Who posed as a Black Knight in "Ivanhoe" so no one in England would recognize him/her during a tournament?

Answer: Richard the Lionhearted

Another classic novel, written by Sir Walter Scott, and set in medieval England. The protagonist is Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe (so he goes by both names, as they did back then), and he has been rejected by his father, Cedric, for supporting King Richard the Lionheart (and daring to fall in love with Rowena). King Richard has secretly returned to England from captivity after the third crusade in time to help fight with Ivanhoe as the disguised Black Knight in a tournament, and then eventually defeat King John and reclaim England.

The novel has been adapted to film and TV and is fairly historically accurate.
6. In business, a white knight "rides" in as a friendly investor. What is the goal of a Black Knight in business?

Answer: To dismantle and destroy a profitable business

A Black Knight in business is one who enters in the guise of an investor, gets on the board of directors, and then runs the business into the ground for individual personal gain. They can do this in various ways like drawing cash out of the business through high personal expenses, forcing the current business to sell off the profitable parts of the company to others at below market value, or forcing the business to buy other assets (maybe the Black Knight's other businesses) at hugely inflated prices.

The Black Knight may be doing this due to a personal grudge or just for personal gain, but the end result is the destruction of a originally profitable business.
7. What golfer had the nickname "the Black Knight"?

Answer: Gary Player

Born in South Africa, Gary Player wore black on and off the golf course and had a reputation for unfailing courtesy. The nickname of the Black Knight became so associated with Gary Player that his son, Marc, began Black Knight International, the company that represents all of Player's commercial activities and endorsements.
8. Probably best known for his march "Pomp and Circumstance", which is played at most graduations, what composer also wrote a cantata entitled "The Black Knight"?

Answer: Edward Elgar

Elgar, born in 1857, was the son of an English piano tuner who had very little "formal" music training and grew up in very modest surroundings as the fourth of seven children. He struggled early in his life, but emerged as a conductor and then composer. He himself was knighted in 1904.
9. In chess, how many black knights are on the board at the beginning of the game?

Answer: two

There will be two black knights in the black king row between each black bishop and rook when the board is properly set up. At the beginning of the game, the bishop and knight are generally considered equal in value at 3 points each, while the pawns each have a value of 1.

The mighty queen has a value of 9. How valuable is the king? Some would say infinite, since, once captured, the game is over.
10. In what role-playing handheld computer game was the Black Knight thought to have died either at the hand of Ike or under the rubble of Nabos (yet no trace was found)?

Answer: Fire Emblem

Zelgius is the powerful Black Knight in "Fire Emblem" whose identity was unknown for so long. Both his sword and his armor are blessed. It is revealed in "Radiant Dawn" that Zelgius did indeed survive.
