Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Doug and Carrie Heffernan were the protagonist couple of this CBS sitcom that ran for nine seasons between 1998 and 2007. What was the show's name?

Answer: The King of Queens

"The King of Queens", which aired from September 21, 1998 to May 14, 2007, starred Leah Remini and Kevin James as the Heffernans, Carrie and Doug. The couple resided in Rego Park, Queens, together with Carrie's father Arthur, portrayed by Jerry Stiller.

Both Remini and James starred together again in the 2016 sitcom "Kevin Can Wait", which ran until 2018.
2. The name Dana Elaine Owens might not ring the bell if you're not too much into hip hop, but this lady has made a significant impact in the music industry with songs like "U.N.I.T.Y" and "Black Hand Side", among others. What is this rapper most commonly known as?

Answer: Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah released her first album when she was only 19 years old, in 1989. Her third album, "Black Reign" (1993), containing "U.N.I.T.Y", her biggest hit to date, was the first album by a solo female rapper to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Aside from her music career, she also pursued a successful acting career, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for "Bessie" (2015) and receiving a nomination for the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress, for her role in "Chicago" (2002). In 2006, she received a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the first hip hop artist to do so.
3. Which of the following musicians does NOT have a "king"-related nickname?

Answer: Ozzy Osbourne

Elvis and Michael Jackson are commonly known as the King of Rock and Roll and the King of Pop, respectively. Jim Morrison went by the nickname "The Lizard King" after a poem he wrote.

While Ozzy was never "crowned" as a king in the music business, he did have a "royal" title, as he is usually referred to as the Prince of Darkness, among other nicknames.
4. Aaliyah Dana Haughton was well on her way to establish a name in the music and acting industry, until her tragic passing in 2001 in an airplane crash. Her last film, released in 2002 and based on a novel by Anne Rice, was dedicated to her. What was it called?

Answer: Queen of the Damned

Aaliyah started her music career being only 10 years old, and released 3 albums, all of them meeting great success.

On August 25th, 2001, after completing the shooting of the music video for her single "Rock The Boat" in the Bahamas, Aaliyah and 7 more members of her crew died when the plane that was to take them back to the US crashed shortly after takeoff. She was only 22 years old.

At the time of her death, she was also beginning an acting career, having just finished her scenes for her second film, "Queen of the Damned", where she starred as the title character.
5. Widely considered one of the best association football players of all time, Edson Arantes do Nascimento was the first player to win three FIFA World Cups as a player, and earned the moniker "O Rei", Portuguese for "The King". How was he more commonly known?

Answer: Pele

Pele was one of the stars of the Brazilian national team that dominated association football from 1958 to 1970. With only 17 years, he helped Brazil lift their very first trophy in 1958, and repeated the feat in 1962 (although he could only play two matches and missed the rest due to an injury) and 1970, scoring a total of 12 goals in the four tournaments he played. He is credited with scoring over 1,000 goals throughout his career, averaging almost one goal per match.

Pele died on December 29th, 2022, shortly after the conclusion of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
6. A notable medieval queen, Tamar the Great reigned around the 12th and 13th centuries. During her rule, notable military, political and cultural achievements were made, leading to the consideration of her reign as the Golden Age of this transcontinental country located in the Caucasus. What country, called "Sakartvelo" in the local language, was Tamar the first female ruler of?

Answer: Georgia

Queen Tamar was the daughter of King George III, who proclaimed her heir and co-ruler of Georgia during his rule. She rose to the throne in 1184 despite significant opposition from Georgian aristocracy, partly due to never having had a female monarch until then.

After making some concessions to ease the pressure put on her by the aristocracy, she then set on a series of military campaigns and a fierce foreign policy that resulted in the expansion of the Georgian Empire over the whole Caucasus, bringing forth a notable prosperity and the flourishing of the Georgian culture, among other achievements.

Tamar's reign ended with her death around 1213. She is regarded as one of the most important historical figures in Georgian popular culture and has been canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church as the Holy Righteous Queen Tamar.
7. A recurring villain in many Marvel comic series, the Kingpin was introduced as an enemy of Spider-Man and later became the nemesis of Daredevil. But aside from that, he serves as the final boss of a beat-em-up video game centered on a character who's usually depicted with a large white skull on his chest and who seeks revenge after the killing of his family by the mafia. Who is the title character of this classic '90s arcade?

Answer: The Punisher

Wilson Grant Fisk, known as the Kingpin, is a bald, overweight crime lord in a white suit, who wields a cane that can shoot a laser beam. He initially was portrayed as a typical mafia lord with more ordinary abilities, and later evolved into a supervillain that employed more sophisticated devices to his aid (like the cane mentioned earlier).

Aside from Spider-Man and Daredevil, the Kingpin is also at odds with the Punisher, who stars in a memorable beat-em-up type game released in 1993, along with Nick Fury. Although both characters' storylines and motivations are different, their main objective is to bring down the Kingpin's organization, which inevitably brings them to face the man itself in the final battle of the game.
8. The most common playing cards sets are the French deck and the Spanish deck. Both sets have "face cards", i.e. cards that do not represent a cardinal quantity of a given suit, but instead depict a person. Both decks feature a king figure, but which one of the two has a queen among the face cards?

Answer: French

The French-style deck (which is also known as the International or Anglo-American suited cards) has 13 cards per suit, with the face cards not being numbered. The Spanish style deck has 12 per suit, with the 10, 11 and 12 corresponding to the face cards.

Both decks have a king figure and a knave figure (called "jack" in the French deck, and "sota" in the Spanish), but, while the French deck has a queen, the Spanish instead has a knight on a horse (commonly called "caballo", Spanish for "horse").
9. When discussing horror literature, Stephen King's name is likely to come up as one of the first choices. While he is now one of the most celebrated authors in the genre, he used the pseudonym of Richard Bachman shortly, in part due to wondering if his success was due to talent or luck. Eventually, Bachman's true identity was outed, just as he was working on a book that would produce a memorable 1990 film adaptation. What was it?

Answer: Misery

Already an established writer in the horror genre, King decided to write under the Bachman pen name in 1977, starting with the novel "Rage". He wrote a total of five books using this pseudonym, until, in 1985, Steve Brown, a bookstore clerk, ended up discovering his true identity after noticing similarities in the styles of writing.

King was planning on releasing "Misery" under Bachman's name, but abandoned the idea after being outed. The book would end up turning into a movie starring James Caan and Kathy Bates, that is considered one of the best film adaptations of King's work (even by the author himself), as well as the only one to win an Academy Award (that honor went to Bates' chilling performance as Annie Wilkes).

After King "killed off" Bachman, two more works by him were "discovered" and subsequently published: "The Regulators" (1996) and "Blaze" (2007).
10. 2009 saw the release of "Kings And Queens", lead single of "This Is War", which was the third studio album by this rock band fronted by the multifaceted Jared Leto. What is the space-themed name of the band?

Answer: Thirty Seconds to Mars

Academy Award winner Jared Leto formed Thirty Seconds to Mars in 1998, together with his brother Shannon. Known for their long and experimental songs and cinematic music videos, they released their eponymous debut album in 2002 and have since released a total of six LPs, with "It's the End of the World but It's a Beautiful Day" (2023) being their latest release at the time of this quiz.

The song "Kings and Queens" was widely acclaimed upon its release, not only for its sound and lyrical theme, but also for its music video. It was the band's second number one single on the US Alternative Songs chart.
