Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to many scientists, the stars, planets and galaxies which can be seen by humans amount to only about 4% of the universe. What have scientists named the substance that they suggest makes up the rest?

Answer: Dark matter

The term "dark matter" was first suggested by astronomer Franz Zwicky of California Institute of Technology in a paper he published in 1933. During the 1970s, astronomer Vera Rubin made further observations which led to her conjecture that 90% of the universe is made up of this hypothetical substance. Others suggest that dark matter comprises closer to 85% of the universe's matter.
2. What is the title of the movie, released in 2008, which was directed, produced and co-written by Christopher Nolan? (Hint: Christian Bale starred as this comic book hero.)

Answer: The Dark Knight

"The Dark Knight" was the second in a trilogy of "Batman" films rebooted by Christopher Nolan: the first being "Batman Begins" (2005) and the third "The Dark Knight Rises" (2012). The title made it the first "Batman" live action film which did not have "Batman" in it.
3. What phrase, which started life with links to horse racing, refers to something or someone with unknown qualities?

Answer: Dark horse

"Dark horse" is a phrase that began when trainers and jockeys of racehorses had a fast horse which they wanted to keep out of the public eye. They would then place bets for far higher odds than they otherwise could. Training would usually take place under cover of darkness and thus they were called "dark horse".
4. Up until the late 19th century, Africa was a mysterious and largely unexplored land to foreigners. By what name did it become popularly known, especially by Europeans?

Answer: The Dark Continent

One book which illustrates the notion of the "dark continent" is Joseph Conrad's "The Heart of Darkness". It was the basis of the film "Apocalypse Now".
5. This term has been largely abandoned by historians in the 21st century. It describes a period in European history from roughly AD 476 to the Renaissance. What term is it?

Answer: The Dark Ages

For many, many years the time period following the fall of the Roman Empire until the Renaissance was popularly known as the Dark Age, in the sense that not much was known about it. (The Latin derivation being "saeculum obscurium".) During the 20th and 21st centuries, the term has largely been abandoned due to its negative connotations.
6. According to the website about.com, there are over forty names for the devil. Satan and Beelzebub are just two of them, but can you give me a third?

Answer: The Prince of Darkness

John Milton, in "Paradise Lost", popularized the title Prince of Darkness in the 17th century. It has been put forward that the term goes back further to the 11th century, and its original creator was possibly Bernard of Clairvaux.

7. "Anger, fear, aggression...the dark side they are". This is a quote spoken by which character from the film "Star Wars"?

Answer: Yoda

Yoda was a powerful and renowned Jedi master in the "Star Wars" universe. Despite his lack of height, 66cms, his skill with the light saber was exceptional. Latterly, and just before his death, he acted as instructor and mentor to Luke Skywalker in the process of becoming a Jedi knight. Yoda's main claim to fame, I believe, is his unusual way of speaking which is very idiosyncratic. The proof is there for all to see in the following quote taken from the website Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki:

"Secret, shall I tell you? Grand Master Jedi Order am I. Won this job in a raffle I did, think you. 'How did you know, how did you know, Master Yoda?' Master Yoda knows these things. His job it is".
8. In photography, where would I go when I wanted to develop my prints?

Answer: Darkroom

Although it's absolutely essential for a darkroom to have complete darkness due to the sensitivity of film, three other forms of light are highly recommended. These are white light, safe light and enlarger light. White light is just an ordinary bright room light.

This is needed for such things as selecting negatives, mixing chemicals and cleaning up. Safe light is specifically designed so that photographic paper (unlike film) can be handled without causing damage. These lights consist of certain colours along with a dim light. Finally, enlarger light is self explanatory as it is used when focusing the enlarger or exposing printing paper to make a print.
9. What is the name of the Pink Floyd album, released in March 1973, that stayed on the Billboard album chart for 741 weeks?

Answer: The Dark Side of the Moon

"The Dark Side of the Moon" remains an outstanding album decades after its release. It was popular in both the USA and UK, being one of the best selling albums in both countries.
10. Blake, Hadrian, Dwayne and Nigel are all male names having something in common. What is this commonality?

Answer: They all mean "dark".

Names are more than a label which identify us, and there are many theories linking names and personalities. I am sure everyone has heard this little ditty:

"Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child that is born on the Sabbath day,
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay."
