Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of capital cities, in Great Britain which of these is the odd one out?: Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London.

Answer: Belfast

If you played part one of this series you will have seen that Great Britain comprises the countries of Scotland, Wales and England. The capitals of these GB countries are Edinburgh, Cardiff, and London.

Belfast is the capital city of Northern Ireland, which is not part of Great Britain. It is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
2. A battle by any other name would be just as deadly, as William Shakespeare never said. Timewise, of these battles on English soil, which is the odd one out?: St Albans, Northampton, Wakefield, Naseby.

Answer: Naseby

St Albans, Northampton, and Wakefield were fought during the Wars of the Roses in the 15th Century between rivals for the throne of England. The war was fought between the Houses of York and Lancaster. The Yorkists won at St Alban's and Northampton. The Lancastrians won at Wakefield and also ended up as victors of the war.

Naseby was a battle during the English Civil War between the Royalist forces who supported the king and the Parliamentarians who supported Cromwell. Naseby was the deciding battle and went in favour of the Parliamentarians. As a result, King Charles I got angry and lost his head. Literally.
3. In terms of the football clubs they played for, which of these England World Cup winners is the odd one out?: Alan Ball, Martin Peters, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst.

Answer: Alan Ball

When England won the football (soccer) World Cup in 1966, Alan Ball played his club football for Blackpool. The other three played for West Ham United.

Ball would go on to play for 12 other clubs in Europe and North America before retiring as a player in 1983 after 833 domestic games from 1960. He was also the manager of eight clubs.
4. We'll keep a welcome in the hillsides, but which of these songbirds was not born in Wales?: Shirley Bassey, Mary Hopkin, Maddy Prior, Sophie Evans.

Answer: Maddy Prior

Shirley Bassey, Mary Hopkin, and Sophie Evans were born in the Principality of Wales. Maddy Prior was born in England.

Prior is best known as lead singer of the folk band Steeleye Span. Their best performance on the charts was "All Around My Hat", which reached number five in 1975 according to the Official Charts Company.
5. "This is the self-preservation society", but which of these actors is the odd one out as he did not appear in the 1969 movie "The Italian Job"?: Michael Caine, Noël Coward, Benny Hill, Jason Statham.

Answer: Jason Statham

Jason Statham appeared in the woefully inadequate American 'remake' in 2003. (That is the opinion of this quiz maker who considers the original 'Italian Job' his favourite movie of all time.)

The 1969 movie was the story of a group of English criminals who set out to steal gold bullion being delivered to a car factory in Turin - all under the noses of the Italian Mafia.

Set in Los Angeles, the 2003 version told of a gang trying to steal gold bullion from a former member who had double-crossed them.
6. Among great British television comedy shows which of these was the odd one out as it was not written by Jimmy Perry and David Croft?: "Dad's Army", "Last Of The Summer Wine", "Hi-Di-Hi", "It Ain't Half Hot Mum".

Answer: Last Of The Summer Wine

The cuckoo in the nest was "Last Of The Summer Wine, which was written by Roy Clarke. This long-running series wove stories around a group of pensioners growing old disgracefully in Yorkshire.

"Dad's Army" was based around a Home Guards outfit during World War 2; "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" focused on a British army entertainment group in WW2; "Hi-Di-Hi" was set in a British holiday camp.
7. "Tartan noir" was a name used to describe crime novels by Scottish authors and set in Scotland. By genre, who is odd one out here?: Muriel Spark, Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Craig Russell.

Answer: Muriel Spark

Ian Rankin wrote the stories of the Edinburgh detective John Rebus; Val McDermid wrote the series based on Tony Hill and Carol Jordan; Craig Russell wrote the Lennox books. (All were the 'pens' behind many other books, of course.)

Muriel Spark is probably best remembered for "The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie". She was a prolific writer, with 'Encyclopaedia Britannica' categorising her large number of novels as serious themes presented with satire and wit.
8. As locations for television soap operas in Great Britain, which of these is the odd one out?: "Emmerdale", "Walford", "Glendarroch", "Weatherfield".

Answer: Glendarroch

Glendarroch was the frictional setting for "Take The High Road", later renamed "High Road", which was set in Scotland.

The other three were set in England. "Emmerdale" was set in a Yorkshire village; Weatherfield was the fictional area of Greater Manchester for "Coronation Street" and Walford was the fictional borough of London for "EastEnders".
9. X marks the spot in terms of talent, but which of the singers listed is the odd one out?: Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke, Amanda Normansell, Louisa Johnson.

Answer: Amanda Normansell

Lewis, Burke, and Johnson were all winners of the televised talent show "The X Factor" in 2006, 2008, and 2015 respectively.

In 1993, Amanda Normansell won the TV show "Stars In Their Eyes". "Stars In Their Eyes" was based on the Dutch "Soundmixshow". In it want-to-be singers took to the stage to impersonate established artists. Amanda Normansell appeared as Patsy Cline.

(Cynically, apart from a bit of make up, it is difficult to see a wide gap between the two formats since "X Factor" comprised people singing songs made famous by others.)
10. Locationally, which of these inland bodies of water in Great Britain is the odd one out?: Lomond, Ness, Awe, Grasmere.

Answer: Grasmere

Lomond, Ness, and Awe are all lochs in Scotland. Grasmere is a lake in the Lake District of England.

The United Kingdom has 40,000 lakes in all. Loch Ness is the largest in the UK by volume (and has a monster). Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland is the largest by surface area.
