Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the "League of Ovaltineys" formed to promote in 1935?

Answer: The sale of the cocoa based hot drink "Ovaltine"

The "League of Ovaltineys" was a children's club formed in 1935, in Great Britain to ostensibly promote the sale of "Ovaltine" as a drink but with the further objectives of improving the moral fibre of juvenile society. It had little or nothing to do with global peace, ovoid things or short people.
2. How many members of British society, children and adult children, registered as members of the "League of Ovaltineys" by 1939, just four years after its inception?

Answer: 5,000,000

A remarkable 5,000,000 people registered for their free membership badge, book and an opportunity to enter competitions.
3. Every person applying to become a member of the "League of Ovaltineys" was sent a formidable rule book. To complete registration and become an Ovaltiney they had to sign and return a form in the book to receive their badge of membership. Who were applicants to send the form back to in order to complete their registration?

Answer: The Chief Ovaltiney

The rule book was to be kept secret from all non-Ovaltineys (parents were deemed honourable Ovaltineys) and in a very safe place. Nobody but members are allowed to know the deep secrets that membership affords a fully fledged Ovaltiney.
4. Members of the "League of Ovaltineys" must make seven promises to comply with seven golden rules of membership. Which of these is NOT a golden rule of membership as detailed in the rule book? (Part 1)

Answer: I promise to donate a few pennies from my savings to a worthwhile charity - I understand that to give is better than to receive

Woe betide the member who failed to live up to these exacting standards!
5. Members of the "League of Ovaltineys" must make seven promises in order to comply with seven golden rules of membership. Which of these is NOT a golden rule of membership as detailed in the rule book? (Part 2)

Answer: I promise to do an errand every day for my mother - because mothers are kind and good and made me what I am

Johnnie, Elsie and Winnie were the three children pictured on documentation about the club, such as the front cover of the rule book. They depicted prime examples of the wholesome Ovaltiney child.
6. "When anyone knocks on your door or calls you on the telephone and you want to find out if he is a member of the 'League of Ovaltineys', you must ask them for the secret password to prove it." What is this secret password that must be given?

Answer: Ovaltiney, Ovaltiney

The rule book states that "If he (or she) does not give the password you may be sure that the person is an imposter and is just pretending that he belongs to the League when he really doesn't at all."
No doubt one of Britain's best kept secrets.
7. When a member of the "League of Ovaltineys" meets another Ovaltiney then a secret salute should be given. How is this salute made?

Answer: Hold up your right hand with middle, ring and little finger pointing upwards and with 1st finger and thumb curled to form an "O"

In the interests of national security please do not divulge this secret salute to any third party who is not entitled to know it. If you do I shall tell Terry.
8. Beyond the secret salute there are other secret signs made by hand that members of the "League of Ovaltineys" may use to send signals to one another. According to the rule Book. What does it mean in Ovaltiney code to put the forefinger of your right hand to the right side of your nose?

Answer: Come over to my house after school

These signs were known as "Wig Wam" signs. They were secret and allowed for a covert communication between hardcore "Ovaltineys".

For example to place the forefinger of the left hand against the left nostril meant; "Look out, someone is trying to steal our secrets."

To tap your "Ovaltiney" badge three times with a finger meant "Let's go home."
9. The "League of Ovaltineys" had a theme song. What are the opening lines?

Answer: "We are the Ovaltineys, little girls and boys. Make your request we won't refuse you, we are here just to amuse you..."

The song in full goes thus:

"We are the Ovaltineys, little girls and boys
Make your requests, we'll not refuse you
We are here just to amuse you
Would you like a song or story?
Will you share our joys?
At games and sports we're more than keen
No merrier children could be seen
Because we all drink Ovaltine
We're happy girls and boys."
10. Very special members of the "League of Ovaltineys" could become Silver Star members which grants them a special silver plated star badge to wear with pride above their standard membership badge. How could a standard member earn such a meretricious award?

Answer: By introducing three new members. For each new member you recruit you must despatch paper disc from a tin of Ovaltine.

It is best explained by "Ovaltine" themselves;

"To become a Silver Star member is as simple as A.B.C. because everyone wants to join the 'League of Ovaltineys' when they hear how much fun it is, and about the badge and the book they get.

Tell them to give you the paper disc from a tin of "Ovaltine" straight away and tell them about 'Ovaltine' and how good it tastes.

Ask them to tell their mothers how good 'Ovaltine' is - how it builds boys and girls up if they're nervous or poorly; how it makes them want to eat more and helps them to grow strong and sturdy and gives them lots of energy for work and play."
