Mixed UK Trivia Questions

1. What would you most likely be doing on a visit to Lords, The Oval, or Headingley?

From Quiz
UK General Knowledge

Answer: Watching a cricket match

These are amongst the best known venues for cricket matches in the UK.

2. Who described a proposed extension to the National Gallery in London as "A monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend"?

From Quiz A Who What Where When and Why UK Quiz: Part 2

Answer: Prince Charles

In 1984 the Prince of Wales spoke on the 150th anniversary of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). In a far-reaching address, he lamented some of the developments that had taken place in London since the end of World War 2. He kept his special ire for proposals to build an extension to the National Gallery declaring: "Instead of designing an extension to the elegant facade of the National Gallery which complements it and continues the concept of columns and domes, it looks as if we may be presented with a kind of municipal fire station, complete with the sort of tower that contains the siren. "I would understand better this type of high-tech approach if you demolished the whole of Trafalgar Square and started again with a single architect responsible for the entire layout, but what is proposed is like a monstrous carbuncle on the face of a much-loved and elegant friend." Founded in 1824, the gallery is an art museum in Trafalgar Square. By the start of the 21st Century, it boasted of hosting more than 2,300 artworks.

3. Who became prime minister of the United Kingdom in 2019?

From Quiz A Who What Where When and Why UK Quiz

Answer: Boris Johnson

In 2019 Boris Johnson became leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party, succeeding Theresa May. In the United Kingdom, the leader of the party that wins an overall majority of seats in a parliamentary General Election becomes prime minister. Johnson had been the popular choice of Conservative Party members. He called a general election late in 2019 and won with a majority of 80 seats in the House of Commons. Johnson was a fervent supporter of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. That had been decided by a referendum in 2016. How the leaving agreement was to be achieved was the core of the general election campaign. That goal came into reality on December 31, 2020.

4. The Peel P50 was originally made between 1962 and 1965 and is the "Guinness Book of World Records" as the smallest production car ever made. Where in UK was it made during this time?

From Quiz Small Is Beautiful

Answer: Isle of Man

The Peel P50 was a microcar indeed, with one door, one windscreen wiper and one headlight, powered by a 49cc engine, capable of a top speed of 37mph (60km/h). Peel proudly proclaimed that it was big enough for one person and one carrier bag and went on to sell 50 cars, of which at least 27 still survive. When new a P50 cost £199 ($260) and they are so prized by collectors now that one sold at auction in 2016 for $176,000 (£134,000). The Peel P50 was revived in 2010 and they are now built in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

5. "Swan Upping" happens once a year. On what English river does it take place?

From Quiz A Bit of This and That in the UK

Answer: Thames

"Swan Upping" is the yearly census of Mute Swans. It has been carried out on the Thames since the 12th century, although it was not until the 15th century that a royal charter was put in place. The census normally takes place during the third week in July each year.

6. Fortunately it's a nice spring morning so I start with some gardening. I'm cutting back my roses to make them stronger and more productive. What is the technical name for this?

From Quiz A Day in the Life of a Lockout

Answer: Pruning

Pruning is what you do to cut back and shape many types of tree and shrub. When you do it depends on the plant. Some are best done immediately after flowering, others in the Spring just as new growth is started. With roses the aim is to take out weak and dead branches, and then to shape the bush so that it is open to allow air to circulate. At the same time the height is reduced. All of this encourages strong new growth and a good show of flowers.
