quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Animals: Dolphins are believed to be one of the smartest animals on earth. They have a system of clicking and whistling noises that are used for what?

Answer: Naming other dolphins

Dolphins are one of the few animals who have complex naming systems akin to humans. Dolphins are also extremely creative animals who have learned to adapt to their environment in many different ways, including using sponges to protect their noses when digging on the ocean floor.
2. Brain Teasers: Marilyn vos Savant once held the Guinness World Record for highest I.Q. ever recorded. She was also famous having a column in which readers would frequently submit brain teasers and ask her to solve them. One of these brain teasers that generated much controversy is listed below. "A shopkeeper says she has two new baby beagles to show you, but she doesn't know whether they're male, female, or a pair. You tell her that you want only a male, and she telephones the fellow who's giving them a bath. 'Is at least one a male?"' she asks him. 'Yes!' she informs you with a smile. What is the probability that the other one is a male?" True or False: The correct answer to the puzzle is 50-50, just like vos Savant replied.

Answer: False

The correct answer to the puzzle is one in three. This is a logical fallacy problem. Because there are only two gender options for the dogs, it is widely assumed there is a 50-50 chance of the other dog being male. However, this is not true.

This is easier to solve if the dogs have names. Marilyn vos Santos named them A and B. There are four possible gender combinations for the two dogs. Both A and B can be male. Both A and B can be female. A can be male and B female or A can be female and B male. Because we know that at least one beagle is male, we can eliminate one of the possibilities: the one with two females.

That leaves three options. Because one is male there is only a one in three chance the other is male because of the three remaining possible gender combinations only one of them has two males. The other two state the other dog is female. The question is made confusing because we don't know which beagle the bather identified as male.
3. Celebrities: Which "Taxi" actress has hyperthymesia, an extreme form of autobiographical memory?

Answer: Marilu Henner

Henner played Elaine O'Connor Nardo on "Taxi" for which she won a Golden Globe. Her hyperthymesia was mentioned on occasion when she was on "Celebrity Apprentice" for two seasons. She has written several books about what it is like to live with her ability.
4. Entertainment: Sean David Morton is a rare example of a self-proclaimed male psychic in the entertainment industry. By what more famous moniker is he known?

Answer: America's Prophet

Morton, in his career, has claimed to be in contact with astronauts who met with aliens and that he learned to time travel while in India and Nepal. In 2010, he and his wife were charged with fraud in the state of New York after allegedly defrauding customers out of over $6 million.
5. For Children: Which actor played the wizard Harry Potter in the movie franchise of the same name beginning with "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" in 2001?

Answer: Daniel Radcliffe

Radcliffe starred as Harry Potter, a young orphan who attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Rupert Grint plays Harry's friend Ron Weasley. Alan Rickman plays Severus Snape, a teacher at Hogwarts. Matthew Lewis plays Neville Longbottom, a bumbling student.
6. General Knowledge: If telepathy is the communication between two people without using the sense of physical contact, what is telekinesis?

Answer: The ability to manipulate objects without touching them

Specifically, telepathy is the ability to influence an object without coming into physical contact with it. This is commonly seen in the media as moving objects without touching them, but it also includes levitation. Telekinesis is more properly called psychokinesis, which means mind movement.
7. Geography: The famed Russian mystic Grigori Rasputin died in the city of Petrograd, which is now called what?

Answer: St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg has been called many things in its history, including Petrograd and Leningrad. Rasputin was born in the small village of Pokrovskoye. He predicted that the Russian Royal Family would one day see this out-of-the-way village. This came true in 1917 (after Rasputin's death) when the Romanovs were sent into Siberia and passed through Pokrovskoye.
8. History: Joan Quigley was an astrologer who was frequently contacted by which person during the 1980s?

Answer: Nancy Reagan

After Ronald Reagan was nearly assassinated in 1981, the First Lady became petrified for his life. She contacted Joan Quigley who said that she could have prevented Hinckley's assassination attempt had she known about it in advance. She also told Mrs. Reagan that she simply wasn't looking in that direction, which is why she did not foresee it.

The two developed a close relationship and Quigley was consulted almost daily about what the president should and should not do. The relationship was kept secret until 1987 when Reagan's Chief of Staff Donald Regan, who never liked Nancy, exposed it in his memoirs.
9. Hobbies: The tarot card called the Hierophant (V) used to be known by what other name?

Answer: The Pope

The Pope is now called the Hierophant in most traditional tarot card decks. The name was changed because the Pope had lost considerable power since the tarot cards were invented and is no longer the great political and military leader the position once was. Hierophants refer to high priests in the Eleusinian Mysteries of Ancient Greece.
10. Humanities: The Oracles of Delphi, also known at the Pythia, were prophetesses who "operated" in the Temple of Apollo for at least a millennia until which Roman emperor abolished pagan worship in 395 A.D.?

Answer: Theodosius I

Theodosius I was the last emperor to receive a prophecy from the Oracle. However, he was also the one who ordered the end of pagan worship. The Oracle was established in at least 800 B.C. and may have been established as early as 1400 B.C. in the Mycenae Kingdom.

Over the years and even during the Oracle's existence, there have been attempts to come up with a more earthly explanation for the prophecies and oracles. Most of them involved inhaling fumes that were naturally let off in the area, possibly oleander.
11. Literature: "Mindstar Rising" was the debut novel of which literary psychic detective created by Peter F. Hamilton?

Answer: Greg Mandel

Greg Mandel was a retired English soldier who served in a special unit for psychics. His psychic abilities included being able to sense emotions and having reliable intuition; both were essential in overthrowing a Marxist government. Mandel is a psychic detective who, in the novels, helps Julie Evans weed out spies in her company called Event Horizon.
12. Movies: In which 2009 film does George Clooney play Lyn Cassady, a psychic spy for the U.S. military?

Answer: The Men Who Stare at Goats

"The Men Who Stare at Goats" involves Bob Wilton, a journalist portrayed by Ewan McGregor, as he learns about a military unit training psychic spies during the Iraq War. One of these soldiers is Lyn Cassady who claims he can kill a goat by staring at it.

The film is a loose parody of the book of the same name written by Jon Ronson. The characters are composites of real life psychics who claim to have many of the same abilities the characters do. Guy Savelli, a real life psychic, once claimed to a kill a goat by staring at it.
13. Music: In the song "Love Potion No. 9" originally sung by the Clovers, what did the love potion smell like?

Answer: Turpentine

"It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink..."

The song is about a man who visits a gypsy who whips him up a love potion. However, it works too well and he falls in love with everything. The lyrics were written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was popularized by the Searchers in 1963.
14. People: Which of the following was NOT one of the incorrect predictions made by Jeane Dixon during her career?

Answer: Thomas Dewey would defeat Harry Truman for U.S. President in 1948

Jeane Dixon correctly predicted that Truman would defeat Dewey in 1948. She also correctly predicted the assassinations of several people including JFK, whom she predicted would win in the election of 1960, and Gandhi.

The Jeane Dixon effect is a term used to describe a situation where psychics promote their few correct predictions (often vague predictions) over their many failures. Dixon infamously predicted a number of incorrect things including World War III starting over a dispute of some remote Chinese islands, Russians landing first on the moon and Trudeau's second child being a girl.

World War III did not start in 1958. The Americans were first on the moon and Trudeau's second child was a boy, Alexandre. Dixon was in frequent consultations with Richard Nixon and Nancy Reagan.
15. Religion: Leviticus 20:27 of the King James version of the Bible states that wizards shall be put to death in what manner?

Answer: Stoning

"A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood upon them."

The Bible and other books from different religions look negatively upon psychics, mediums and other similar people. It was commonly believed that these people were possessed by demons or the devil and were ungodly. It is considered a major sin in some religions to have your fortune told or receive a palm reading.

A number of Christian saints were martyred for having prophecies and seeing the future because it was believed they were possessed. During the time since their deaths, a number have been cleared of demonic possession. Even some saints that were not martyred, such as Bernadette of Lourdes, were ridiculed for claiming to have visions.
16. Sci/Tech: Psychic surgery is considered a hoax by medical professionals. It involves healing people via psychic powers and only removing the bad materials from the body. The healing of these ailments, which people claim to have experienced, without traditional medicine or surgery is commonly believed to be the result of what?

Answer: Placebo effect

The placebo effect is when a person's health improves without taking any medication but they believe they are. It is often seen with participants in drug trials who are taking the placebo pill and not the actual pill.

Psychic surgery is essentially the removal of bad material from the body without using an instrument and the body is not cut open except for sometimes a small nick. It is considered a hoax in the United States by several government agencies and other psychics.
17. Sports: The Wiz is the nickname of the NBA team the Wizards, who play in which U.S. city?

Answer: Washington D.C.

The Washington Wizards debuted in 1961 as the Chicago Packers and then became the Chicago Zephyrs and the Baltimore Bullets. They became the Wizards in 1997. They had been the Washington Bullets in the years prior but the name was changed because Abe Pollin, the team's owner, thought it was giving the team a reputation because of a spat of gun violence in Washington, D.C.
18. Television: Which of the following was NOT one of the sisters on the television series "Charmed"?

Answer: Petunia

The other sister was Phoebe. "Charmed" followed the lives of three good witches and sisters. The series starred Holly Marie Combs as Piper, Alyssa Milano as Phoebe and Shannen Doherty as Prue. In season four, Doherty left the show and was replaced by Rose McGowan as Paige.
19. Video Games: In the "Pokémon" series, which type of attack is super effective against the psychic type beginning in the "Gold/Silver" editions?

Answer: Ghost

In the original "Pokémon" games, a few characters mentioned that ghost types are best against the psychic types. However, this was not true as psychic types were immune to ghost attacks. This likely was an error or glitch in the programming as most media from the generation one games, including from within the game itself and the anime, stated that psychic types were weak to ghosts.

This was corrected in generation two and from there on.
20. World: In some jurisdictions around the world, for what reason is fortune-telling illegal?

Answer: It is considered fraud and/or false advertising

Some places consider fortune-telling a fraudulent service because of disbelief that people can predict the future, and thus fortune tellers must be lying. To get around these laws, fortune tellers often post signs saying they are for entertainment purposes only or call themselves psychic or spiritual consultants, names that are less definitive and leave room for error.
