The World of the Blind Trivia Quiz

In my life of being blind from birth, there's a lot I've noticed about how people treat me as well as my fellow blindies (those of us who are totally unable to see). I created this quiz to inform and teach those who don't know our world.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What other name are blind people known by?

Answer: Visually impaired

A partially sighted person has limited sight. The other two terms (virtually impaired and visually incapable) don't exist!
2. Which of the following activities can blind people NOT perform?

Answer: Driving

Well, a blind person can drive, if he gets taught how to, but just imagine him hurtling in a highway at 80 miles! Disaster! Cooking can be done through training, repetition, and/or help. Blindness is not associated with being unable to dance. Some people think blind people can't feed themselves. I actually experienced this at a friend's house where someone wanted to spoon-feed me!
3. A blind person can pursue all of the following career paths EXCEPT which one?

Answer: Astronaut

Astronauts around the world are required to have very good vision. All of the other paths listed are pursuable. As a matter of fact, I'm a pianist. My blind friend is a lawyer. My sister who's blind is a vocalist and composer.
4. Which screen-reading software can be used by a blind person to navigate his PC?

Answer: JAWS

JAWS, also known as Job Access With Speech, reads everything which appears on a PC screen out loud. It can be set to different speeds, depending on one's ability to use it. TALKS is the mobile version. ZoomText is more helpful for partially sighted people as it increases the size of the text on-screen.
5. The machine that blind people use to write with is called what?

Answer: Brailler

Braille consists of six dots, which a blind person feels with the tips of his or her index fingers. The machine that produces it is called a Perkins Brailler.
6. Most blind people cannot perceive light.

Answer: False

Most blind people can differentiate between darkness and light. They can also perceive a shade, but might not be able to identify it. There are some forms of total blindness in which light is not perceived.
7. Why do a lot of blind people have dogs?

Answer: Because dogs can physically guide them

It's called a "guide dog" for exactly that reason. A guide dog is a trained dog, which accompanies a blind person to most places they want to go.
8. Which of these can a blind person use to walk in public, if there's no one to guide them?

Answer: A white cane

A white cane is also called a "long cane". The visually impaired person walks with it in front of him on the ground at an angle, so that whatever obstacle that's ahead of him will first connect with it. The blind person then moves away from danger.
9. What is the correct method of guiding a blind person (according to the South African National Council for the Blind and others)?

Answer: Let them hold onto your arm, then walk a step in front of them.

It makes sense, and is also comfortable for both you and the blind person. You should also tell the blind person when you are approaching stairs. Be the first to go up or down the first step. When entering a narrow gap, put your guiding arm slightly to your back.

They'll know that they've got to walk behind you to avoid bumping into anything. When you approach a seat and want your blind friend to sit down, put your leg in front of the chair and he'll know what to do next.
10. A blind person usually identifies another person by ...?

Answer: their voice

The best way a blind person would know you is by hearing your voice. Blind people's brains typically improve their hearing ability.
