Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do several kinds of martial art which use feet as well as hands as weapons, a hypnic jerk which, to a sleeping person, feels like falling, and a White Zombie song off the album "Psycho-Head Blowout" have in common?

Answer: kick

While there is no one martial art exclusively called kick boxing, there are a number of martial arts which allow and include kicking in the offensive arsenal: karate, Muay Thai, Japanese kickboxing, Sanda and Savate. Several world organizations claim to conduct world championship kickboxing tournaments but none acknowledges the supremacy of the other.

A hypnic jerk (or hypnagogic jerk) is a momentary sensation of falling which startles a person just going to sleep back to awakeness. It may be accompanied by rapidly pounding heartbeat, heavy breathing and sweating. It may be called a twitch, a jerk, a start or a kick.

"Kick" is a Rod Zombie song the lyrics of which make no sense to most normal people. It was released on the band's third EP in 1987, before their first full-length "Soul Crusher" was released.
2. What do a liqueur named after its inventor and manufacturer Peter Heering, an American author and artist engaging children about global warming, and the name for a coffee bean while it is still growing on the bush, have in common?

Answer: cherry

Peter Heering created Cherry Heering in Denmark in 1818 by crushing Danish cherries and soaking them in neutral grain spirits, sweetening the mix with sugar and then aging it for five years in casks. Herbs and spices of an undisclosed sort are added at some point, as well. It is not possible to make a true Singapore Sling without Cherry Heering.

Lynne Cherry (b. 1952) began her career writing and illustrating children's books of all sorts. Her work then grew to embrace concern for the world and the results of climate change. She writes, paints, sculpts and teaches especially in this area.

The coffee bean is technically a seed but, while still growing on the coffee bush, it is called a cherry. Most coffee beans are doubled: they contain two beans with their seeds facing each other. Less common is peaberry coffee with only one seed.
3. What do slivovitz, an apprehension agent (bounty hunter) in Janet Evanovich's novel series, and a friend of Strawberry Shortcake in the eponymous series have in common?

Answer: plum

The Central European regions of Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria are well known for their local varieties of plum brandy. The Slavic name for Damson plum brandy is slivovitz. In the US, it is sometimes called eau de vie. Because it is made without grain, it can be kosher for Passover.

Stephanie Plum is the fictional protagonist in a series of Janet Evanovich's novels. She works for her uncle at Vincent Plum's Bail Bonds. The novel's titles are ordinal, e.g. "One for the Money," "High Five" and "Seven Up."

Plum Puddin' first appeared in "Strawberry Shortcake" in 1980 but was not released as a doll until 1984, by which time he had changed genders to female and obtained a final "g" in her name. In the modern series of games, movies and videos, she is one of Strawberry Shortcake's closest friends.
4. What do L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel, 1902 Broadway musical and 1939 movie, basketball player Gus Williams, and a game and trading card company which marketed Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, and Pokémon Trading Card Game have in common?

Answer: wizard

What began as "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" became "The Wizard of Oz" but lost none of its wonderfulness. Both the novel and the movie remain immensely popular.

Gus Williams (b. 1953) played professional basketball for 12 years. He led the Seattle SuperSonics to the championship in 1979 when his high-scoring play earned him the title "The Wizard."

Wizards of the Coast is a game marketing company home based near Seattle. It used to own a number of retail stores but now concentrates exclusively on producing games.
5. What do amygdalate (a white liquid extracted from almonds), a suspension of magnesium hydroxide used as an antacid and laxative, and the white liquid extracted from ground brown-coconut meat and water have in common?

Answer: milk

Almond milk is a kind of plant milk made from almonds. Because it is lactose free, it is drunk by lactose-intolerant people. Its production dates (at least) from the Middle Ages.

Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide suspension) has been used for stomach and bowel problems since the early 1800s. The most widely known branding of this remedy is as Phillips' Milk of Magnesia.

Coconut milk is not the same thing as the water inside a coconut. Coconut milk and coconut cream are common ingredients in Thai and other Southeast Asian cookery. It is also found in the cuisines of some parts of South America.
6. What do the first moment of the lunar cycle, a 1947 Doris Day song in which "stars have disappeared from sight," and the first Commando Cody movie serial have in common?

Answer: moon

The lunar cycle begins with the New Moon at which moment the Moon and the Sun have the same elliptical longitude. Because of this, the Moon is not visible from Earth at the New Moon.

Doris Day recorded Redd Evans' and Dave Mann's "No Moon at All" in 1947, followed by covers by Nat King Cole, Julie London, Count Basie, George Shearing Quintet, Mel Tormé and Ella Fitzgerald. "No moon at all, what a night. Even lightning bugs have dimmed their light. Stars have disappeared from sight and there's no moon at all."

In 1952, Republic Pictures created a twelve-part movie serial starring George Wallace as Commando Cody. The black-and-white serial required Commando Cody to save the Earth from attack by the evil Krog who is based on the dark-side of the Moon. The series' name was "Radar Men from the Moon" but, when it was later edited into a feature, it was renamed "Retik the Moon Menace."
7. What do the mascot of the 1980 Summer Olympic Games, the mascot of the United States Forest Service, and plush animals first designed for greeting cards who grew to have their own movies and TV series have in common?

Answer: bear

The mascot of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympic games was a Russian bear named Misha. Vigorously marketed, Misha was the first Olympic mascot to become an economic success. Japanese children's television produced a Misha cartoon series.

The U.S. Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters and the Ad Council administer the image of Smokey Bear. Smokey was based on a real black bear cub orphaned near Capitan Gap in the Lincoln National Forest of New Mexico.

The Care Bears were designed to adorn greeting cards and to express feelings to recipients of the cards. Plush toys and other collectibles followed. The Care Bears then began producing a long series of movies and made-for-TV movies and a TV series.
8. What do the number of trombones mentioned in Meredith Willson's "The Music Man," the Bennington flag, and a brand of gasoline sold by ConocoPhillips have in common?

Answer: 76

According to the song sung in "Music Man" (1957), "Seventy-six trombones led the big parade, with a hundred and ten cornets close at hand." This image was used by Professor Harold Hill to sell musical instruments to the good people of River City.

The Bennington flag was carried by American troops in the Battle of Bennington (1777). It looks much like the modern flag of the United States with 13 seven-pointed (rather than five-pointed) stars and 13 stars and stripes. On the dark blue canton, the number 76 recalls the year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The Union 76 brand of gasoline is common throughout the western and southern United States. It was created by the Union Oil Company of California (later Unocal) in 1932. It is now owned by CococoPhillips.
9. What do the green leaves and red berries of the genus Ilex, the computer on the spaceship Red Dwarf as seen on British TV (1988-2012), and the object of Greg's unrequited love in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series have in common?

Answer: Holly

Around 500 species of holly (Ilex) grow around the world. The red and green of English holly (Ilex aquifolium) explain its decorative use at Christmastide. While its species have been declared "noxious weeds" by the State of Washington, the plant elsewhere produces the makings of the hot drink yerba mate (I. paraguariensis).

Holly, the ship's computer on the Red Dwarf, was portrayed by Norman Lovett in some of the series and by Hattie Hayridge in other parts. The computer developed "computer senility" over time and was therefor unreliable.

In the series of books and movies called "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," the protagonist Greg Heffley is enamoured of Holly Elizabeth Hills (an older woman) but she takes no notice of him. Jeff Kenney's graphic novels are not only popular with youngsters but also with adults as they capture the angst of childhood in a gentle and humourous way.
10. What do the only major daily newspaper in Atlanta, Georgia, the oldest commissioned warship in the United States Navy, and the second written attempt to create a federation of American colonies (1787) have in common?

Answer: Constitution

The Atlanta Constitution was founded in 1868. The Atlanta Journal was founded in 1883. The papers merged to become the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2001.

The USS Constitution is a wood-hulled frigate whose keel was laid down in 1794. She is moored in Boston Harbor where she serves as a part of the U.S. Navy's "History and Heritage" Command. Her officers and crew are active navy because she is a commissioned ship.

The first attempt to form a union of American colonies was the Articles of Confederation (1777-1781). They did not work well. The U.S. Constitution was completed in 1787. It seems to have lasted rather admirably.
