Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Its icy volcanoes, tenuous nitrogen-methane atmosphere, and southern hemisphere ice cap of nitrogen and methane may all be due to its odd rotational axis, which tends to alternate polar and equatorial regions facing the sun. This describes what satellite, by far the largest of its planet?

Answer: Triton

Triton is a moon of Neptune, as is Nereid, which boasts the most eccentric orbit of any known satellite. Uranus' moon Oberon is named after the King of the Fairies in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (All of Uranus' moons are named for literary characters). Europa resembles Earth in its composition of silicate rocks, and there is evidence which postulates the existence of an active sea of liquid water beneath its surface. If this sea does in fact exist, it is not unlikely that the moon will have some form of living things.
2. Mr. Sowerberry, Agnes Fleming, Mr. Brownlow, Jack Dawkins, and Fagin are all characters found in what Charles Dickens work?

Answer: Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist is perhaps the best known of all Dicken's works, but was highly criticized originally because it incorporated criminals and prostitutes as central characters. This particular work, released in 1839, was used to bring public notice to the workhouse, child labor, and the recruitment of children as criminals.
3. This work, an 1893 tempera, prompted its creator to write, "I painted the clouds like real blood. The colors are shrieking." The figure in the foreground stands with its arms bent upward and its head stripped bare of skin. This is what work, stolen from Oslo's Munch Museum on August 22, 2004?

Answer: The Scream

Munch, a Norwegian painter and graphic artist, developed an emotionally charged style that was a forerunner in the 20th century Expressionist movement. He painted "The Scream", as part of his "Frieze of Life" series, in which sickness, death, anxiety, and love are central themes. He died in 1944 at the age of 81.
4. Now for an insanely easy one. According to the Book of Genesis, how many of each species of animal did Moses take on the ark?

Answer: Zero

As most of you probably noticed, this is a trick question. It was in fact Noah who built the Ark, and Moses who received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai.
5. To earn $25 for her family, she generously sells her long, chestnut brown hair. She later opens the Plumfield School for Boys with her future husband, Professor Bhaer. Name this March sister, a central character in Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women".

Answer: Jo

"Little Women" is an 1868 biographical novel dealing with the lives of the March sisters growing up in the Civil War era.
6. Treating wood with CCA to protect the wood from natural elements is an effective method of preserving the wood's longevity. However, the EPA now prints warnings on CCA treated wood stating that it contains an element which studies have shown to cause neurological damage and even cancer. What element?

Answer: Arsenic

Chromated Copper Arsenate is used to build many outdoor products like fences, picnic tables, and playgrounds. CCA-treated wood has been banned in some countries, and the same companies that offer CCA wood in the U.S. offer arsenic free versions in other countries.
7. In the popular TV series "Sex and the City", what was the name of Charlotte York's second husband, played by Evan Handler?

Answer: Harry Goldenblatt

Harry Goldenblatt was Charlotte's divorce attorney with respect to her first marriage to Trey MacDougal. Harry was featured in the latter part of season 5 and all of season 6.
8. I am on the beach looking out into the Atlantic at the Aran Islands, an extension of The Burren, a unique limestone karst region. Yesterday I visited the Fastnet, the most famous lighthouse in the nation, located about four miles southwest of Cape Clear. What country is this, whose relative area is about that of West Virginia?

Answer: Ireland

Perhaps Ireland's most prominent geological interest is the Cliffs of Moher. Spanning about 8 kilometers and with an average height of 200 meters, the Cliffs are a fantastic vantage point from which to see the Aran Islands.
9. What part of the brain is responsible for the control of involuntary functions such as breathing, cardiovascular regulation, and swallowing?

Answer: Medulla Oblongata

The hypothalamus is crucial in regulating hormones, hunger, thirst, and arousal just to name a few. The cerebellum is responsible for the coordination of movement, particularly balance. The corpus callosum is simply a thick band of tissue which divides the two regions of the cerebral cortex.
10. The sum of the internal energy of a body and the product of its volume multiplied by the pressure is called what?

Answer: Enthalpy

Entropy is a measure of the disorder or randomness inevitable in a system. Extropy is the pseudo-scientific prediction that human intelligence and technology will enable life to expand in an orderly way throughout the entire universe (The opposite of entropy). Energy is simply the ability of a physical system to do work.
