Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Hillary Clinton's middle (not maiden) name?

Answer: Diane

The former First Lady was born Hillary Diane Rodham.
2. Who was Playboy Magazine's first "Playmate of the Month?"

Answer: Margie Harrison

Ms. Harrison, who appeared in the January, 1954 issue was the first to be given the title "Playmate of the Month." Marilyn Monroe, who appeared in Playboy's first issue, was called "Sweetheart of the Month."
3. What year were the last U.S. silver coins minted for general circulation?

Answer: 1969

This is a bit tricky. All silver was removed from dimes and quarters in 1965; half dollars, however, continued to contain 40% silver through 1969. Half dollars minted in 1970 also contain 40% silver, but they were produced only for use in Sealed Mint Sets and Proof Sets for sale to collectors, not for general circulation.

The Silver Eagles and various commemorative silver coins still being minted are also not intended for circulation.
4. Who was the second Pope?

Answer: Linus

It's easy to memorize all the U.S. Presidents; if you want a challenge, try memorizing all the Popes!
5. Which of these is thought to be a "lost" play by William Shakespeare?

Answer: Cardenio

Some people think a play discovered in 1993 known as "The Second Maiden's Tale," may be "Cardenio." Others disagree. Another "lost" Shakespeare play, "Love's Labor Won," is now considered to simply an earlier version of "All's Well That Ends Well" or "The Taming of the Shrew."
6. Put these naval ranks in order, from the lowest to the highest.

Answer: Ensign, lieutenant, commander, captain, commodore

The ranks correspond to army ranks as follows: an ensign is equivalent to a 2nd Lieutenant; a lieutenant to an army captain; a commander to a lieutenant colonel, a captain to a full colonel, and a commodore to a brigadier general.
7. What makes Martha Wayles Skelton Jefferson unique among First Ladies?

Answer: There is no known portrait of her

Believe it or not, we don't know what Mrs. Jefferson looked like. There is no sketch, drawing or painting of her. She was born in wedlock in Virginia in 1748 and died in 1782. She wasn't noted for being particularly tall.
8. What was the only year the St. Louis Browns won the pennant?

Answer: 1944

They lost to their cross-town rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, in the World Series, 4 games to 2. In 1953 they moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles.
9. Who was the first horse to win thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown?

Answer: Sir Barton

All these horses won the Triple Crown, but Sir Barton was the first, accomplishing the feat in 1919. He didn't get much credit for doing it either, as he was completely overshadowed by the great Man O' War. The last horse to win the Triple Crown in the twentieth century was Affirmed in 1978.
10. What is the most anthologized poem in the English language?

Answer: "The Tiger," by William Blake

According to William Harmon, editor of "The Top 500 Poems." I would have guessed something by Shakespeare. William Blake didn't make his living by writing; he was a very skilled artist, known for his engravings and etchings. He did a lot of book illustrations.
11. What is the largest state, in land area, east of the Mississippi River?

Answer: Georgia

Georgia ranks 21st in land area among the 50 states. Michigan is the largest eastern state if both land and water area are considered.
12. What was the first movie to win the Academy Award for Best Picture?

Answer: Wings

This film, which stars Clara Bow, Buddy Rogers and Richard Arlen is still worth watching today. You'd be surprised how soon you forget this is a silent movie.
13. The novel "Gone With the Wind" is set in which state?

Answer: Georgia

Scarlett was a Georgia peach.
14. If your ring is marked 14K, how much gold does it contain?

Answer: 58.33%

Pure gold is 24K; 14K gold is 14/24 gold, or a bit more than half precious metal.
15. Bauxite is an important ore of what metal?

Answer: Aluminum

Aluminum is a very common element in the earth's crust, but extremely difficult to refine. At one time, aluminum was more costly than gold!
16. Who was Lincoln's first Vice-President?

Answer: Hannibal Hamlin

Hamlin was from Maine; in 1864 it was decided by Republican Party officials that it would be advantageous to have a Southerner on the ticket to bolster Lincoln's reelection chances, so he was dumped in favor of Andrew Johnson. One wonders what sort of President Hamlin would have made if he, not Johnson, had succeeded Lincoln.
17. What planet comes closest to Earth?

Answer: Venus

Venus, second planet from the sun, is Earth's closest celestial neighbor.
18. Place these titles of nobility in order, from lowest to highest.

Answer: Baron, viscount, earl, marquess

19. In what state is the county known as "Bloody Williamson" located?

Answer: Illinois

Williamson County, Illinois got the nickname "Bloody Williamson," during labor troubles resulting from union agitation in the coal mining industry in the early 20th century. Murders and wholesale massacres were common. It was also the scene of bootlegging and Ku Klux Klan activity, and remains one of the most economically depressed and backward areas of the Illinois into the twenty-first century.
20. What country won the most medals at the 1936 Summer Olympics?
