Question 1 of 10
1. The partisan FunTrivia crowd chants the birdcall "teez, teez, teez" as the FunTrivia All-Stars mount the stage to begin the trivia competition. Beaming from their t-shirts, emblazoned on their tote bags and even stamped on their pencils is the smiling face of the (proposed) FunTrivia mascot "Pippy", the tree pipit. But why would I propose this seemingly mundane and obscure bird to be FunTrivia's mascot? Well, which of the following is the scientific name for tree pipits? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The FunTrivia all-star team members seat themselves at the competition table. Before beginning, they solemnly recite my proposed FunTrivia motto in unison. This Latin phrase captures the noble purpose to which FunTrivia is so clearly dedicated and expresses the profound joy, pleasure, sweetness and delight that may be found in that which is called commonplace or trivial. Which of the following Latin phrases expresses the notion that to know trivia is to know joy? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Before beginning the trivia match, one of the FunTrivia team members, who happens to be a pagan, invokes the name of an ancient goddess who is said to have guarded the "Trivia", the intersection of three roads at the gates to the underworld. What was the Roman name for this somewhat obscure, ancient goddess? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. During the intermission at the trivia competition, FunTrivia volunteers are selling jars of an official FunTrivia product. According to "Springhouse Magazine Online", a quart of wild Southern dewberries picked from a Rubus trivialis vine, a pinch of salt, 1 tsp. vinegar and 2 cups white sugar combined and properly mashed and boiled will produce a candidate for another FunTrivia designation: FunTrivia's Official _____.

Answer: (Three letters, starts with J)
Question 5 of 10
5. Imprinted on the backs of the t-shirts the FunTrivia team is wearing to the trivia competition is my proposed fun trivia coat-of-arms. In one of the quarters of the escutcheon is the official FunTrivia fish, chosen to remind us that not all quests for trivial answers are easy, nor do all efforts succeed. To symbolize this sobering fact, which of the following might be selected as the official FunTrivia fish? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. A second quarter of the FunTrivia escutcheon would display a plant bearing the easily forgettable scientific name, Myosotis scorpioides, which produces the small, blue flower that is my nominee for official FunTrivia flower. The unforgettable common name of this flower expresses a sentiment dear to trivia lovers. What is the common name of the flower?

Answer: (THREE words, leave out the hyphens that are often used, no "s" on the end)
Question 7 of 10
7. With the consent of the inhabitants, FunTrivia's trivia team could call a village in Warwickshire, England its home. The village has several qualities that commend its selection as FunTrivia's official village: it's small; it's obscure; it has a name the owner of this site might be disposed to favor. Of which of the following villages am I speaking? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Because states in the USA seem invariably to select a number of state symbols, it seems fitting that FunTrivia select an official US state. Yet I am encountering difficulty with my selection. You see, I thought it would be best to have a "questioning" state. Which of the following states contains an implied question within its name? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. The prowess with which any FunTrivia all-star team would be endowed would owe much to the tireless efforts of FunTrivia editors. My nominee for the official FunTrivia mammal is intended to symbolize exertions of our selfless editors as they "combs our quizes for speling, puntuashun - and grammatrical erroneouses". Which of the following exemplifies the valiant efforts of FunTrivia's editors? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Finally, any FunTrivia team should be able to point proudly to its very own official vegetable. My nominee is not, strictly speaking, a vegetable; but this is a state of affairs common with official vegetables. Part of this "vegetable's" name derives from the milky white substance that may exude from its underside. About which of the following am I speaking? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Anthus trivialis

"Fact-index.com" provides us with the surprising fact that tree pipits "perch in trees". The site also characterizes these migratory birds as "an undistinguished looking species". I found the appearance of Anthus trivialis to be quite handsome, if not striking. I feel that the tree pipit could appropriately grace FunTrivia t-shirts and other gear.

Answer: Cognitio trivialis, cognitio genialis

"Trivialis" is a Latin term that referred to a crossroads where three "vias" met. The word came to signify that which is commonplace. Genialis refers to gaiety and enjoyment. The Latin "Insignis", which seems to resemble the English "insignificant", actually designated that which was remarkable or extraordinary.

After learning a particularly stirring morsel, one might exclaim "trivialis insignis!" "Trivialis insignis" might also be considered as an official subtitle for the FunTrivia site. "Cogito ergo sum" is Descartes' "I think therefore I am". Fans of Terry Pratchett may recognize "Nunc id vides, nunc ne vides" as the motto of Unseen University, which loosely translates, "Now you see it, now you don't."

Answer: Hecate

One of the manifestations of Hecate was "Hekate Triodisis", "triodisis" being Greek for the Latin "trivia". Although the original "trivia" referred to the threefold roads of the underworld that Hecate guarded, Hecate seemed to have developed into a goddess of the "trivia", in the generic sense of crossroads. Should FunTrivia ever desire a "matron goddess", Hecate would seem a worthy consideration.

Answer: Jam

The ¼" to 1" berries of Rubus trivialis are known as "Southern dewberries". The vines are found in most of the Eastern US and as far west as Colorado. The oil fields of Oklahoma seem to be a favored location. Southern dewberries ripen in June or July. The "trivialis" refers, in this case, to the fact that the vines are commonplace.

Answer: The flounder

"Flounder", the fish and "flounder" referring to clumsiness or confusion developed separately from entirely different antecedents. However, this serendipitous convergence can be used to advantage. Perhaps particularly difficult quizzes could be marked with a "flounder" logo much in the way that sunglasses denote popular quizzes.

Answer: forget me not

A German folktale relates that a lady betrothed to an apparently clumsy knight asked the knight, while he was in full armor, to retrieve a cluster of Myositis scorpiodes floating on the water. Her gallant but dim champion consented and promptly fell into the water. Having the prescience to know he would drown, our intrepid hero cast the blossoms back to his fianceé as he fell and cried out, "Forget me not!" (Had I been the hapless knight, the flowers would have carried a name unsuitable for polite company.)

Answer: Terry's Green

So obscure is Terry's Green that even with the aid of "Google" I was able to learn no more about it than its location in Warwickshire. Since this is an international site, I looked for a Terry, Terrytown or Terryville down under, but in vain. Should the inhabitants of Terry's Green raise objections to being associated with FunTrivia, there are cities and towns aplenty in the USA carrying our founder's name.
8. Because states in the USA seem invariably to select a number of state symbols, it seems fitting that FunTrivia select an official US state. Yet I am encountering difficulty with my selection. You see, I thought it would be best to have a "questioning" state. Which of the following states contains an implied question within its name?

Answer: All three of these states

The states' hidden questions are as follows: Alaska - ask, Wyoming - why, Massachusetts - choose.

Answer: The ferret

The ferret is self-explanatory; and yes, I know that a duck is not a mammal. But I just couldn't pass up fulvous. According to "Dictionary.com", "fulvous" designates a color that is "dull yellow, with a mixture of gray and brown." Employing "fulvous" one could write such sentences as, "The factory spewed forth its bitter, acrid fumes transforming the vault of heaven into a fulvous welkin." Or not.

Answer: Lactarius trivialis

Lactarius trivialis is a mushroom, but if Pennsylvania can vote in a mushroom as their state vegetable, surely FunTrivia can build on Pennsylvania's precedent. My real concern is that Lactarius trivialis might be too well known. According to the "Arctic-flavours" website, Lactarius trivialis (also known as the Northern milk cap) is the "most important mushroom in Finland". Although this "vegetable" is extremely bitter and inedible raw, ten minutes of parboiling will remedy this state of affairs.

When a note from LilahDeDah inspired this quiz, the quiz was intended to cover only unusual vegetables as candidates for FunTrivia's official vegetable. As you have seen, the scope enlarged somewhat. Should my nominees be accepted, I can envision the FunTrivia Coat-of-Arms: a quartered escutcheon bearing the motto "Cognitio Trivialis, Cognitio Genialis", with one of four FunTrivia symbols in each quarter (Tree pipit, flounder, ferret and Northern milk cap mushroom), the border enclosed by an Anthus trivialis vine laden with tantalizing Southern dewberrys. Sales of FunTrivia Dewberry jam and t-shirts might make fees for Gold memberships unnecessary.
