Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the Japanese novel here.

Answer: The Makioka Sisters

The other three titles are German (Guther Grass' "Tin Drum"), French (Jean-Paul Sartre's "Nausea") and Italian (Ignazio Silone's "Bread and Wine"). Junchiro Taniziaki wrote "Makioka Sisters", a probing look at Japan's post-WW2 society.
2. Complete this Dorothy L. Sayers title: _______ Of Witness.

Answer: Clouds

"Clouds Of Witness" is another novel in Sayers' Lord Peter Whimsey mystery series, so beloved of fans of the classic English whodunnit.
3. What is the nickname of Jonny Quest's guardian?

Answer: Race

Richard "Race" Bannon was hired by the government to watch over Jonny Quest (even though his scientist father, Benton, still lived). Jonny's Hindu pal Hadji and bulldog Bandit rounded out the cast of this cult cartoon from the 60's.
4. What was the code name of Avenger John Steed's crippled superior?

Answer: Mother

"Mother" was played by Peter Newcombe and was always seen in a wheelchair.
5. Name the villainess played by Uma Thurman.

Answer: Poison Ivy

Before playing Emma Peel in the "Avengers" remake, Thurman was Ivy in "Batman and Robin". Michelle Pfeiffer played Catwoman in "Batman Returns" and Talullah Bankhead played Widow in the 60's TV series. No one has played Milton Caniff's Dragon Lady as of yet!
6. Name the comedienne S.S. Van Dine put into and titled a Philo Vance mystery for.

Answer: Gracie Allen

Brice, Canova and Daley all had comedic careers, but it was Allen who was honored by Van Dine when he put her into the 1938 mystery, "The Gracie Allen Murder Case". Allen was one of the most beloved scatterbrains in media history and was straight woman to her hubby, George Burns.
7. Name the building in this Kipling poem: "Fultah Fisher's ________"

Answer: Boarding House

"Fultah Fisher's Boarding House" told the melodramatic story of a knife fight between two sailors over a prostitute. In the 20s it became a silent short by Frank Capra, one of his earliest works.
8. What substance shares an etymology with the words GLUE and CLAMMY?

Answer: clay

Clay comes from the same root meaning "sticky" as "glue" and "clammy". After all, clay can be sticky too, and clammy hands feel sticky also!
9. What type of souls did Nikolai Gogol write about?

Answer: Dead

Gogol's novel "Dead Souls" takes a caustic look at the Russian society of his day, through the allegory of a government man taking a census of "dead" souls who aren't really deceased, just those people too poverty-stricken to be marked "alive".
10. Who is the famed author behind these questions?

Answer: James Joyce

All nine questions also refer to ten stories in Joyce's benchmark collection "Dubliners": THE SISTERS, A LITTLE CLOUD, AFTER THE RACE, A MOTHER, IVY DAY IN THE COMMITTEE ROOM, GRACE, THE BOARDING HOUSE, CLAY and, most famous of all, THE DEAD (which became John Huston's final film). Hope you enjoyed the quiz!
