Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1982 movie "Cannery Row", the female lead of Suzy Desoto was played by Debra Winger. In reality, Winger wasn't the first choice to play the female lead. During the first week of the films production, someone else was cast as Suzy Desoto. Who did Debra Winger replace as Suzy?

Answer: Raquel Welch

Raquel Welch was fired after the first week of production so she, in turn, sued the filmmakers. Welch won the case and received over 10 million dollars.
2. What is the name of the first man-powered aircraft that flew across the English Channel?

Answer: Gossamer Albatross

The Gossamer Albatross was the second aircraft to win the "Kremer Prize" for human-powered flight. In 1977, the Gossamer Condor was the very first Kremer Prize winner for first human-powered flight over land. Both aircraft were built by Dr. Paul MacCready and both craft were piloted by Bryan Allen.
3. Where would one have to go to see a duck-billed platypus in the wild?

Answer: Australia

The duck-billed platypus is an egg-laying mammal indigenous to Australia. When first discovered in 1798 by European explorers, a sketch of the animal and pelt were sent to English scientists to examine. They first thought that someone had sewn the bill of a duck onto the head of a beaver and that the whole thing was a hoax.
4. Why are manhole covers round?

Answer: To prevent them from falling into the manhole.

Any other shape can be twisted or turned on an angle and fall into the manhole.
5. When was the first double edged safety razor invented?

Answer: 1901

The first safety razor was invented in the U.S. by King Gillette.
6. Who was orbiting the moon in the command module while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon?

Answer: Michael Collins

Before the Apollo Space Program, Michael Collins was a Gemini Program astronaut and was the first to have two successful EVA's (Extra Vehicular Activities) during that program. He is one of only 24 people who have traveled to the moon.
7. What does it mean to "trip the light fantastic"?

Answer: dance in a nimble or imaginative way

"Tripping the light fantastic" has been used in many dance movies from the 30's and 40's and even been heard in some "Three Stooges" shorts. The phrase was originally attributed to a line in Milton's 1645 poem "L'Allegro" which reads, "Com, and trip it as ye go, On the light fantastick toe."
8. Where would one have to look to see a lunula?

Answer: at a fingernail

The lunula is the whitish half-moon shaped coloration at the base of a fingernail.
9. Why did English bakers, in medieval times, invent the idea of the "Baker's Dozen"?

Answer: To avoid being fined for "short-weighting" customers

In olden times, almost all goods were sold by weight. To insure that they weren't selling under weight baked goods, if a customer wanted a dozen of an item, bakers would toss in one extra to avoid the possibility of being fined.
10. When was the Battle of Marathon fought?

Answer: 490 B.C.

The battle took place during the first Persian invasion of Greece in 490 B.C. Legend has it that after the Greeks defeated the Persians, the Greeks sent a messenger named Pheidippides to Athens to announce the victory. Pheidippides supposedly ran approximately 26 miles from Marathon to Athens, announced the victory, and then died. Today we celebrate the legend with the running of marathons all over the world.
