Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a "Sniglet"?

Answer: A made-up word for something that has no word for it

The word "sniglet", was first used by comedian Rich Hall and used in his comedy routines and books. For instance, "Motspur" is the wheel on a shopping cart that always wobbles. "Carunk" is the chunk of ice and snow that builds up on the wheel well of a vehicle in winter. Most sniglets are meant to be humorous. The word sniglet itself is a sniglet.
2. In 1979, what video game system did Mattel Toys introduce to compete with the Atari 2600 game system?

Answer: Intellivision

Intellivision hit the market with a boom in 1979. The graphics were far superior to that of the Atari 2600. The problem with Intellivision system was the controller. People became frustrated with its difficulty and soon started to sell or "mothball" their sets. By late 1983, production of the system had ceased. Mattel gave other reasons for the discontinuation of the system, but the high cost of the system itself, high cost of the game cartridges, and the controller is what caused its demise.
3. What type of insect is a velvet ant?

Answer: wasp

A velvet ant is a wasp that gets its name because of the reddish hairy bodies of the wingless females that resemble ants.
4. On an airplane, what color is the black box in most situations?

Answer: orange

Black boxes are orange obviously so they can be spotted easier in debris and underwater. They also have reflective tape on them.
5. What is a philtrum?

Answer: The groove located just below the nose and above the middle of the lips

In animals, the philtrum helps carry moisture from the mouth to nose in order to keep the nose wet. In humans and primates, it is only a vestigial medial depression between the nose and upper lip.
6. In what country did the game Chinese checkers originate?

Answer: Germany

Chinese checkers was invented in Germany in 1892 and was called "Stern-Halma." In 1928, an American version of the game was developed by the Pressman Co. and called Chinese Checkers.
7. What type of creature is a horned toad?

Answer: lizard

Horned toads are of the family of lizard known as "Phrynosomatidae", meaning "toad-bodied". They have the ability to squirt blood from the corners of their eyes to use as a defense mechanism. They can also puff up their bodies with air to make themselves appear larger to a predator.
8. What are phosphenes?

Answer: The lights you see when you close your eyes and press your hands to them

9. If you have twenty chickens on your farm and all but six died, how many chickens are still alive?

Answer: six

A simple question, but the wording seems to make it more difficult than it actually is to some people. 20 chickens, (all but six) died, means 6 lived.
10. What kind of fruit is a Chinese gooseberry?

Answer: kiwifruit

The Chinese Gooseberry is native to southern China, where it has historically been known by a range of names such as melonette, wood berry, wonder fruit, vine or macaque pear. New Zealand growers began calling it "kiwifruit" to give it more market appeal.
