Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What number is the Roman numeral XXVI?

Answer: 26

The two Xs equal twenty. The 'VI', which is six, added to twenty equals twenty-six.
2. The Roman numeral CCCXVIII is equal to what number?

Answer: 318

The three Cs equal 300. Then you add an X (10) and VIII (8) to get 318.
3. If you put a horizontal bar above a single letter, what does it do to the value in Roman numerals?

Answer: Multiplies it by 1,000

Each bar means you multiply the letter by 1,000. The I never has a bar above it, because there is a letter for 1,000 (M).
4. What does an M with a bar above it mean?

Answer: 1,000,000

An M stands for 1,000. The bar multiplies it by 1,000 making it 1,000,000.
5. What is this Roman numeral: LXXVII?

Answer: 77

You have an L (50) to start with. Then you add the two Xs (20) and the VII (7) to get 77.
6. Try this one. The Roman numeral DCCCXXXIII is:

Answer: 833

You start with the D (500). Then add the three Cs (300). Then the three Xs (30). Finally, plug in the three Is (3) to get 833.
7. Now it's time for a few large numbers. Let's put your knowledge to the test. The year this quiz was made (2013) is what in Roman numerals?

Answer: MMXIII

DDXII could be right, but you never use two letters when the total adds up to another letter. IDM is wrong, because you go from largest to smallest.
8. What should you do when you put a smaller letter in value before the letter that is one numerical value higher than it?

Answer: Subtract the smaller from the bigger

The smaller and bigger letter combination is confusing for some people. It makes you write four like 'IV'. You can't, however write it like IC or IM.
9. What's this number: MCMLXXIX?

Answer: 1,979

The MCM combination makes 1900. Then the L makes it 1,950. The two Xs make it 1,970, and the IX combination is nine. The final sum is 1,979.
10. Now put all your skills to the test. What is MMMMDCCLXXVIII?

Answer: 4,778

This is a challenging number, but let's take a look. Four Ms equal 4,000. A single D and two Cs make it 4,700. An L and two Xs make it 4,770. Finally, a V and three Is lead to the final number of 4,778.
