Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The great knot is an endangered bird native to the tundras of Siberia. The largest of the calidrid species of birds, what type of bird is the great knot?

Answer: A wader, like a sandpiper

The calidrid group of birds have bills that have numerous nerve endings called Corpuscles of Herbst that enable them to locate buried prey under the sand or even snow. The calidrids are primarily native to the Arctic but during the migrating season they form huge flocks and have been known to travel as far as Australia.

More widespread than the great knot is a similar bird called the red knot which has spread beyond Siberia to Canada and Europe.
2. Don't tie your head in a knot on this question. In the following sentence a type of knot popular with men's clothing is hidden. Type the correct answer below. When on a sailboat be careful of high winds or you may not be able to stay afloat.

Answer: Windsor

The Windsor knot is commonly used for neckties worn with formal outfits featuring a spread collar. The Windsor knot is believed to have been named for the Duke of Windsor (King Edward VIII) as taught to him by his father, George V. Interestingly, members of the Royal Air Force are required to only use the Windsor knot for their neckties.
3. Located in Buena Park in Orange County, in what state is the theme park Knott's Berry Farm?

Answer: California

Knott's Berry Farm was opened in 1920 and in 2017 it was ranked Number Ten for theme parks in North America with over 4,000,000 visitors. Knott's Berry Farm features four areas: Ghost Town, Fiesta Village, The Boardwalk, and Camp Snoopy. In addition to these main areas the park also offers seasonal events.

In May 2018 the ride HangTime was opened and it became the first roller coaster on the West Coast with a drop of greater than 90°.
4. Whenever celebrities tie the knot by getting married it seems to be big news. On June 23, 2018 Kit Harington and Rose Leslie got married in Scotland. On what show did they work together as the characters Jon Snow and Ygritte?

Answer: Game of Thrones

I'll try not to give away too many spoilers. In the wildly popular show "Game of Thrones" Jon Snow and Ygritte come from different backgrounds yet are attracted to each other and have a strained relationship due to their allegiances. Outside of "Game of Thrones" Rose Leslie has appeared on "Downton Abbey" and "The Good Fight" while Kit Harington starred in the film "Pompeii" and the television mini-series "Gunpowder".
5. There are also knots in the area of music. Which heavy metal band was founded in 1995 by Shawn Crahan, Joey Jordison and Paul Gray and released the popular album "Iowa" in 2001?

Answer: Slipknot

For the majority of the first two decades of the band's existence Slipknot featured nine members. Their fourth album, "All Hope is Gone", was released in 2008 and it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The band gained fame for their controversial lyrics and frenetic live shows.
6. It appears as though we can find a knot in the "Xanth" series of books. Released in 2010, what author wrote the fantasy novel "Knot Gneiss"?

Answer: Piers Anthony

The English-American author Piers Anthony began the "Xanth" series in 1977 with the novel "A Spell for Chameleon". Over the next forty years he would release 40 more novels in the "Xanth" series. The 34th entry, "Knot Gneiss", tells the story of Wenda Woodwife who undertakes an arduous journey for a magician who promises to cure her of her mood swings.
7. In the 4th century BCE Alexander the Great of Macedonia accomplished a previously unsolvable feat. Named after the capital of Phrygia, what knot did Alexander famously cut rather than unravel?

Answer: Gordian Knot

The Gordian Knot was named after the Phrygian king Gordias who fulfilled a prophecy that a king would enter the town on an ox-cart. His son Midas tied this ox-cart with an intricate system of knots to a post and it became legend that whoever unraveled it would rule all of Asia. Interestingly, Alexander's empire would extend from Greece all the way to India.
8. In a comedic film Adam Sandler teaches a young boy that to tie a proper knot in his shoes "you loop it, you swoop it, you pull". What was this movie released in 1999 that featured the film debut of Dylan Sprouse?

Answer: Big Daddy

In the film Adam Sandler's character, Sonny Koufax, has a five-year old boy show up at his apartment one day. In spite of being an underachiever Sonny takes on the responsibility of caring for the boy. Sonny bonds with the child but eventually he is returned to his father.

The experience motivates Sonny to turn his life around and he ends up becoming a lawyer and starting a family of his own.
9. In sports when a game is tied it is considered 'knotted up'. Even so, most sports leagues have some type of overtime to have an outright winner rather than have the game end tied. Which U.S. sports league modified its sudden death overtime system in 2012 to have the game end on the first possession only if a touchdown is scored?

Answer: National Football League (NFL)

From 1920 to 1973 the NFL did not have an overtime period and thus there were many more ties in those years. From 1974 to 2011 the NFL instituted an overtime period in which the first team to score would win the game. During this time only 17 (3.4%) of the 494 games that went to overtime ended in a tie.

In 2012 the overtime system was modified so that if the team possessing the ball first scored a field goal then their opponents would also get to have at least one possession.
10. In science the knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour. Traveling along a constant meridian, how many degrees of geographic latitude would you traverse in one hour if your speed is 60 knots?

Answer:

Traveling at a speed of one knot you would traverse one minute of geographic latitude in one hour and since there are 60 arcminutes in one degree if you are traveling 60 knots you would traverse one degree in one hour. The knot is not an SI unit but for comparison purposes it is equal to approximately 1.852 km/h or 1.151 mph.
