Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the approximate age of our sun at the present time?

Answer: 4.6 billion years old

Our sun is a middle-aged star, halfway through its expected lifespan of nine billion years. At the end of its life, its hydrogen supply will run out and it will collapse with no energy pushing out. It will then form a white dwarf, creating a nebula where future stars are made.
2. Complete this famous theorem advanced by a Greek mathematician: The square on the hypotenuse is equal to the...

Answer: sum of the squares on the other two sides

This theorem was, of course, made famous by Pythagoras of Samos (582 - 507 BC), a Greek mathematician. However, it is believed that the Indian mathematician Baudhayana discovered the Pythagorean Theorem around 300 years before Pythagoras.
3. Which former United States President won the Nobel Peace Peace in 2002?

Answer: Jimmy Carter

In 2002, James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, 39th President of the United States, won the Nobel Peace Prize for his "efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development".
4. On the American Film Institute's "100 Years... 100 Movies" list of great American cinema, where did Francis Ford Coppola's 'The Godfather' rank?

Answer: Third

'The Godfather' is generally considered the epitome of the Mafia film genre, consistently ranking among the greatest movies ever made. It won the Best Picture Oscar in 1972. On the American Film Institute's "100 Years... 100 Movies" list, 'Citizen Kane' was ranked first, followed by 'Casablanca' and then 'The Godfather'.
5. What is the current capital city of Qatar?

Answer: Doha

Did you know? Doha is the city where drug-tainted sprinter Justlin Gatlin equalled the 100-metre world record of 9.77 seconds in 2006.
6. Who won the 1995 Tour de France?

Answer: Miguel Indurain

Spaniard Miguel Indurain, riding for Team Banesto, won the 1995 Tour in a time of 92 hours, 44 minutes and 59 seconds, almost 5 minutes in front of runner-up Alex Zulle.
7. What temperature is considered "absolute zero" on the Celsius temperature scale?

Answer: -273.15

Absolute zero is a theoretical temperature where no more heat energy can be removed from a system. It has never been actually achieved in any manmade facilities.
8. In which year was the Euro currency introduced in European Union countries?

Answer: 1999

The Euro was introduced on the 1st of January, 1999, in the European Union member states of Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.
9. According to the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, what is the second hardest mineral after diamond?

Answer: Corundum

The Mohs scale of general mineral hardness was created by Fredrich Mohs in 1812. Mohs based the order on relative, not absolute hardness. For example, 9th ranked corundum is twice as hard as 8th ranked topaz, but 10th ranked diamond is actually four times as hard as corundum.
10. Who was the only man to win the 5,000 metres, 10,000 metres and Marathon events at the same Summer Olympics in the twentieth century?

Answer: Emil Zátopek

Emil Zátopek won four Olympic gold medals, two in the 10,000 metres, and one each in the 5,000 metres and the marathon. His win in the marathon at the 1952 Helsinki summer Olympics marked the first time he had ever run the distance in his life. He also set three Olympic records in each of his gold medal-winning events at those games.
