Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What term refers to "the buildup of certain gases in the atmosphere which hold in more of the sun's warmth"?

Answer: greenhouse effect

The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, is the big culprit is creating the greenhouse effect. Gases are given off and form a layer over the earth acting like a greenhouse that keeps the warm air from rising and escaping into the atmosphere.
2. What term refers to "a small territory entirely surrounded by a larger territory"?

Answer: enclave

Two enclaves can be found in the country of Italy. Vatican City, the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, is completely surrounded by the city of Rome. The tiny country of San Marino is located in northern Italy.

Some exclaves are enclaves, but some are surrounded by more than one other territory.
3. What term refers to "the path that a body in the solar system travels around the sun"?

Answer: orbit

Earth takes 365 1/4 days to complete its journey around the sun, and it is the sun's gravity that causes Earth to orbit. Because Earth is tilted on its axis, the seasons change as Earth makes its orbit.
4. What term refers to "the type of energy that is produced by natural underground sources of steam"?

Answer: geothermal

Iceland, due to its location and several volcanoes, is a good example of a country with geothermal energy. In some areas of the country most of the homes, buildings, and even swimming pools are heated by geothermal energy.
5. What term refers to "a dry area on the inland side of coastal mountains"?

Answer: rain shadow

The "shadow" is actually a dry area caused by the mountains blocking the movement of rain. This is also referred to as an orographic effect. An example is Chile's Atacama Desert, the driest desert in the world, caused in part by the Andes Mountains.
6. What term refers to "a chain of islands"?

Answer: archipelago

The country of Japan is an archipelago consisting of four large islands and thousands of smaller ones all located between the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. The answer choices "eyot" and "holm" refer to an island in a river or a lake.
7. What term refers to "the theory that the earth's crust is composed of huge slabs of rock that move"?

Answer: plate tectonics

The slabs of rock called plates rest atop the liquid rock in the upper section of the earth's mantle. They often move in opposite directions creating areas like the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region extending from eastern Asia to western North and South America that is known for earthquake and volcanic activity.
8. What term refers to "a type of environment in which a particular animal species lives"?

Answer: habitat

Rainforests serve as the habitat for numerous animals. Rainforests.net states that "the world's rainforests contain anywhere from 40 percent to 75 percent of all the animals in existence." You will find animals at all height levels in the rain forest from the floor up to the dense leafy canopy.
9. What term refers to "a circular tent made of animal hides that can be packed up and moved from place to place"?

Answer: yurt

These tents are used by nomadic Central Asians who follow the herding tradition of their ancestors. Turks use the word "yurt", while Mongolians call their tents "gers". Assembling the tent takes about two hours. Yurts can also be found in other parts of the world, such as the U. S. where they are popular at ski resorts and campgrounds.
10. If you have done your homework correctly, you should be able to answer this final question by taking the first letter of each answer from questions 1 through 9: What school subject are we studying?

Answer: geography

Geography is one of my favorite subjects. Where would we be without it? Geography is "the study of the earth in all its variety" and normally encompasses five themes - location, region, place, movement, and human-environment interaction.
