Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Caribbean Sea is home to a number of capital cities including which of these on the island of Hispaniola?

Answer: Santo Domingo

While Belmopan (the capital of Belize), San Jose (the capital of Costa Rica), and Managua (the capital of Nicaragua) are all situated in Central America, none of them are on the Caribbean coast.

All of the islands of the Greater Antilles, however, have port capital cities, all of which are major ports of call. On the island of Hispaniola, Port-au-Prince rests on the coast in Haiti while Santo Domingo is in the Dominican Republic. Other Caribbean capital cities include Kingston (Jamaica), Havana (Cuba) and San Juan (Puerto Rico).
2. Found at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula in the Red Sea, what Egyptian city is sometimes considered part of Asia?

Answer: Sharm el-Sheikh

One of the closest major cities to Mount Sinai, the location where Moses allegedly received the Ten Commandments from up on high, Sharm el-Sheikh couldn't be further from the rest of Egypt, and the Nile, known for its extensive ancient history (including pyramids, mummies, and the like).

Instead, found on the shores of the Red Sea, it boasts a number of tourist attractions including the perfect diving waters and coral reefs just near the shore. In the past decade it's become a major tourist destination in the Middle East as well as a site for peace conferences.
3. The largest city on the Caspian Sea, the world's largest landlocked sea (though many consider it a lake), is which of these world capitals known for its oil industry?

Answer: Baku

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is a unique city in that its actually the lowest capital in the world, just over two dozen meters below sea level. Nonetheless, it's a city rich in beautiful architecture and unique culture with an apparently stellar nightlife; it's a very hip spot, and that's a bit weird considering its relative isolation from the rest of Europe. With a name translating to 'The City of Winds', it's also home to local fire-dancers, the sea coast, and earth rich in natural fuels; it's a city of all elements.
4. Which of these cities is NOT found on the Baltic Sea coast?

Answer: Rotterdam

The Baltic Sea is fairly expansive, bordering a number of countries including all of Scandinavia and the rest of Northern Europe. Amongst its major cities are Helsinki, Oslo, and Stockholm, Copenhagen, Saint Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Riga, Tallinn, and Gdansk. Since it's so far north and bordered by countries stretching into the Arctic Circle, northern reaches of its waters can freeze over in the winter months. It's also large enough to contain smaller seas within.

Rotterdam, in The Netherlands, is close to the Atlantic coast, lying on the River Meuse. It's one of the world's busiest ports.
5. The westernmost part of the Mediterranean Sea is the Alboran Sea, which also includes the Strait of Gibraltar. Which European city can be found in this region?

Answer: Malaga

Malaga, Spain is possibly the largest city on the Alboran Coast, which only contains a small portion of the Mediterranean heading about as far east as the Moroccan border. If you head along the Spanish coast to Cartagena (or, further, Valencia and Barcelona) you've gone way too far.

Malaga, the birthplace of both Pablo Picasso and Antonio Banderas, is in the Andalusia Region of Spain and on the Costa del Sol. Its gardens, churches, Roman theaters, and beaches make it a wonderful hotspot for leisure tourism and history lessons alike.
6. Which of these cities is found on the Sea of Japan?

Answer: Vladivostok

Despite the name of this almost-entirely-enclosed body of water, the Sea of Japan is found on the west side of the country while Tokyo is found to the southeast. What can you find on this sea? The entire west of Japan including the northerly city of Akita can be found there.

In addition, the far-east Russian port city of Vladivostok makes its home on the north edge of the sea. Both North and South Korea also find themselves on the coast; Busan, one of the largest South Korean commercial hubs, is in the southern reach of the sea.

The biggest industry here? Fishing; it's too cold for tourists.
7. Which of these Southern Hemisphere cities can be found on the edge of the Tasman Sea?

Answer: Sydney

The Tasman Sea sits between Australia and New Zealand though it doesn't reach the north or east side of New Zealand or any part of Australia west of Tasmania. Sydney is situated on the coast looking out on the Tasman Sea; Canberra is not on the ocean at all.

Other cities found on this body of water include Auckland, Newcastle, and Wellington. The Tasman Sea is, of course, named after Abel Janszoon Tasman, the same man for whom Tasmania was named. It's also known as 'The Ditch'.
8. The Black Sea is the major body of water for what Winter Olympic City?

Answer: Sochi

Sarajevo (in Bosnia and Herzegovina) is landlocked, and so is Innsbruck, Austria. Cortina d'Ampezzo, like Turin, is in the Italian Alps. Sochi, in Russia, is the odd one in for this one-- situated on the northeast edge of the Black Sea in the Caucasus Mountains it straddles the coast as a major resort city, one of the most-visited in all of Russia.

The Black Sea is also the home to Yalta, Ukraine as well as Varna, Bulgaria. It connects to the Mediterranean through the Bosporus Strait (via Istanbul, Turkey and the Sea of Marmara).
9. Only one of these locations is in the South China Sea, but which is it?

Answer: Da Nang

Although Shanghai is the only Chinese option with this question, it's actually on the East China Sea-- the South China Sea is home to Hong Kong and Macau. The South China Sea is relatively large, taking in a great deal of the eastern coast of Southeast Asia. Da Nang, Vietnam, is on the coast, as is Hue. You would also overlook this sea from Manila, Philippines and Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Further south you would find Singapore and Kuching, Malaysia.

The sea is also home to countless smaller islands, many of which are unpopulated.
10. Venice, Italy is on the Adriatic Sea, a smaller part of the Mediterranean. What walled city can also be found on this body of water?

Answer: Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik, one of the most famous cities of Croatia, is found at the southern tip of this slim country which, like Italy, makes up a large portion of the Adriatic Coast. They share the space with a tiny, tiny bit of Slovenia, Montenegro, and Albania before the sea splits out into the Ionian Sea and then the Mediterranean proper. Dubrovnik, a city built over one thousand years ago, features well-preserved forts in its old town perhaps best-known for acting in as King's Landing in the "Game of Thrones" TV show.
